Our school has had a survey on reading. It shows that 55 percent the students spend our time reading textbooks after the school. Only 10 percent enjoy read literature. Why are so many students unwilling to read serious works? According to the survey, they have no enough time because they have too many homework to do. Some complain that literary works are so thick that they have hardly enough patient to finish it. Others who only concentrates on how to get high scores simply admit that reading literature won’t help them at all with their exams. What’s more, some students show no interest in literature. In fact, books play important role in our life. Not only can reading make us relaxing, but also it can help us to learn customs and culture in the past and at present at home and abroad.

【1】加of

【2】our改為their

【3】去掉the

【4】read改為reading

【5】many改為much

【6】patient改為patience

【7】concentrates改為concentrate

【8】加an

percent of...... 故加of。

【2】our改為their,考查代詞。第二句主語是the students,因此應(yīng)spend their time花費他們的時間。故our改為their。

after school放學(xué)。故去掉the。

many修飾可數(shù)名詞,much修飾不可數(shù)名詞,homework是不可數(shù)名詞。故many改為much。

故加an。

There is a story about a man who lost his legs and left arm in an accident. After the accident, only a finger and thumb on his right hand remained.

He was a brilliant, creative, and educated man. He had gained a lot of experience while traveling around the world, so he became very depressed after his accident. He was afraid that he would spend the rest of his life suffering and would no longer be able to spend his life in a meaningful way. Then, he realized that he still had partial function of his right hand and could still write even though it was very difficult. An idea occurred to him, “Why not write to other people who need encouragement?”

He wrote to the prison ministry about sending letters to the prisoners. The prison minister replied, “Writing to the prisoners is acceptable, but your letters will not be answered.”

Filled with excitement, the man knew he could write his letters. He began sending one-way messages of God’s love, hope, strength, and encouragement. He wrote twice a week, testing his strength and ability to the limit. He poured his heart and soul into his words and shared his experience, sense of humor, optimism, and faith.

It was difficult to write those letters, especially without hope of a reply. One day he received a letter from the prison ministry. It was a short note from the officer who monitored and checked the prison mail.

The letter said, “Please write on the best paper you can afford. Your letters are passed from room to room until they fall to pieces!”

No matter what circumstances life may present, we all have unique experiences, abilities, and God-given talents. We can discover ways to reach others who desperately need messages of encouragement and strength.

Sometimes you may have a strong desire to do something strange or terrible. However, chances are that you don’t act on your impulse (沖動), but let it pass instead. You know that to take the action is wrong in some way and that other people will not accept your behavior.

Perhaps the most interesting thing about the phenomenon of taboo behavior is how it can change over the years, how certain behavior and attitudes once considered taboo can become perfectly acceptable and natural at another point in time. Topics such as death, for example, were once considered so upsetting that it was a taboo to even talk about them. Now with the publication of important books such as On Death and Dying and Learning to Say Goodbye, people have become more aware of the importance of expressing feelings about death and, as a result, are more willing to talk about this taboo subject.

One of the newest taboos is the topic of fat. Unlike many other taboos, fat is a topic that people talk about constantly. It’s not taboo to talk about fat; it’s taboo to be fat. The “in” look is thin, not fat. In the work world, most companies prefer youthful-looking, slim manager to sell their image as well as their products to the public. The thin look is associated with youth, vigor, and success. The fat person, on the other hand, is thought of as lazy and lacking in energy, self-discipline and self-respect. After all, how can people permit themselves to become fat? In an image-conscious society, thin is ‘‘in”, fat is “out”.

It’ s not surprising that millions of people have become obsessed (著迷) with staying slim and “in shape”. The pursuit of a youthful physical appearance is not, however, the only reason for people’s obsession with diet and exercise. Recent research has shown the importance of diet and exercise for personal health. As in most technologically developed nations, the life-style of people has changed since last century. Modern machines do all the physical labor. Cars and buses transport us quickly from point to point. As a result of inactivity and disuse, people’s bodies can easily become weak. In an effort to avoid such a fate , millions of people are spending more of their time exercising. Parks are filled with joggers and bicyclists, and many companies are providing special exercise equipment for their employees to use during the work day.

【1】What does the word “taboo’’ refer to in the passage?

A. A crime committed on impulse.

B. An unfavorable impression left on other people.

C. A strong desire to do something strange or terrible.

D. Behavior considered unacceptable to the society.

【2】What does the underlined phrase “in” look probably mean?

A. The fashionable look. B. The hidden look.

C. The usual look. D. The inside look.

【3】According to the passage, the common belief is that _________.

A. fat people are full of energy

B. thin people are more successful

C. fat people prefer to have fat bosses

D. thin people are less image-conscious

【4】People pay more attention to diet /span>and exercise because of _________.

A. their need to kill time

B. their love for sports

C. their concern for health

D. their belief in hard work
