Modern society cannot well do without the contribution that women can make in the professions and other kinds of work. There is a serious shortage of nurses and teachers, to mention only two of the occupations followed by women. It is a waste to give years of training at public expense only to have the qualified teacher or nurse marry after a year or two and be lost forever to her profession. The training, it is true, will help her in her duties as a mother, but if she continued to work, her service would be more widely useful. Many factories and shops, too, are largely staffed by women, many of them married. While here the question of training is not so important, industry and trade would be seriously short of staff if married women did not work.

We can see then that there are good reasons for regarding it as desirable that married women should have some occupation outside the home. However, there are serious objections. Schools do not keep children occupied the whole day and school holidays are long. The mother’s working day will almost certainly end well after the school day and her holiday will not begin at the same time as her children’s. There will be therefore a period when children are not taken care of unless a substitute for the mother can be found, or unless it becomes more generally possible for women to work part-time. There seem to be some grounds for believing that there is more bad behavior among the children of working mothers than among those of mothers who stay at home, but more evidence is required before we can be certain of this. What we can be certain of, however, is that many more will continue to do so.

1.According to the writer, women nurses and teachers ought to carry on their occupation after marriage because______.

  A. they are not allowed to give up their jobs

B. their training should not be wasted

  C. they want to make a living by themselves

D. they must still improve themselves as mothers

2.According to the writer, one possible way for the children of working mothers to be attended to is that________.

   A. schools keep children occupied the whole day

B. their mothers change their occupation

   C. their mothers do not work full time

D. their mothers should stay at home

3.The clause “unless a substitute for the mother can be found” means_______.

   A. if someone takes over the mother’s occupation

B. if no mother works all day

   C. if no one takes care of the children for the mother

   D. if someone takes care of the children for the mother

4.The writer believes that bad behavior among the children of mothers who do not work is _________ among the children of working mothers.

   A. possibly less than   B. about the same as

C. a little greater than   D. certainly more than

【解析】本文講述了已婚婦女尤其是媽媽在外工作對(duì)社會(huì)和家庭帶來(lái)的影響。

1.B細(xì)節(jié)理解題。從第一段It is a waste to give years of training at public expense only to have the qualified teacher or nurse marry after a year or two and be lost forever to her profession.可以看出,作者認(rèn)為受過(guò)大量教育的婦女只工作一兩年就呆在家里帶孩子是一種浪費(fèi)。

2.C細(xì)節(jié)理解題。從第二段...unless it becomes more generally possible for women to work part.time.一句可以看出作者認(rèn)為解決母親上班和照看孩子這兩者矛盾的一個(gè)可行性辦法是讓這些婦女部分時(shí)間工作。

3.C 句意理解題。因?yàn)閡nless=if not,所以if從句里應(yīng)用否定式,substitute意為“替代者”,即替母親照看孩子的人,所以正確答案選C。

4.A 細(xì)節(jié)推斷題。從第二段There seem to be some grounds for believing that there is more bad behavior among the children of working mothers than among those of mother8 who stay at home一句看,作者認(rèn)為似乎有理由相信母親上班的孩子的不良習(xí)慣比那些母親不上班的孩子的不良習(xí)慣要多,由此反推,母親不上班的孩子比那些母親上班的孩子的不良習(xí)慣要少,即選項(xiàng)A。

Whitman(惠特曼)was one of the most original and inspiring American poets, true to his art and to his role as a poet. He devoted himself to poetry praising the native American experience. As America’s first epic poem, Leaves of Grass(《草葉集》)ran nine editions with more than 400 poems all written in free verse(詩(shī))form, that is, poetry without a fixed beat or regular rhyme scheme. The tide implies rebirth, renewal, or green life. As Whitman once said, “Leaves of Grass was the outcropping of my own emotional and other personal nature―an attempt, from first to last, to put a person, a human being freely, fully and truly on record.”

For Whitman, science, democracy[民主] and spirituality(靈性)were the three things that founded the base (構(gòu)成……基礎(chǔ))of modern poetry. Whitman tried to mix the world of science, the philosophy of democracy and the spiritual feeling of life into one, to incorporate(合并)these into his poetry. For Whitman, the poetic form was to be organic, not limited(受限制的). Therefore, he threw aside the traditional ornaments(修飾)and prettiness of verse and had his own form. Both the form and content of his poems are revolutionary. With its frequent use of common language and everyday events, his poems represents a turning point in the history of American poetry―poetry fashioned out of specially American experience in a clearly American idiom. Whitman’s unique poetic creation has developed a very significant tradition in American poetry.

In his poems, he celebrated new America rather than regretted it. He was against slavery, admired Lincoln, supported strikes, and combined the ideal of the democratic common people and that of the ragged individual.

62、Whitman wrote poems mainly to      .

A.praise the rich people in the USA

B.call on others to turn against the government

A.he thought the poetic form was not limited but organic

B.a(chǎn)ll the poets did so

D.he wanted to make his poems special

64、According to the passage, we know Whitman was a poet who      .
