13.If two scientists at Los Alamos National Laboratory are correct, people will still be driving gasoline powered cars 50 years from now, giving out heat-trapping carbon dioxide(二氧化碳)into the atmosphere-and yet that carbon dioxide will not contribute to global warming.
In a proposal by two scientists, vehicle emissions(排放)would no longer contribute to global warming. The scientists,F(xiàn).Jeffrey Martin and William L.Kubic Jr.,are proposing a concept, which they have named Green Freedom, for removing carbon dioxide from the air and turning it back into gasoline.
The idea is simple.Air would be blown over a liquid solution of potassium carbonate, which would absorb the carbon dioxide. The carbon dioxide would then be put to chemical reactions that would turn it into fuel(燃料):gasoline or jet fuel.
This process could change carbon dioxide from an unwanted,climate-changing pollutant into a vast resource for renewable fuels. The cycle-equal amounts of carbon dioxide produced and removed-would mean that cars, trucks and airplanes using the synthetic (合成的) fuels would no longer be contributing to global warming.
Although they have not yet built a synthetic fuel factory,or even a small model, the scientists say it is all based on existing technology."Everything in the concept has been built,is operating or has a close cousin that is operating."Dr.Martin said.
The Los Alamos proposal does not go against any laws of physics, and other scientists who have independently suggested similar ideas.Dr.Martin said he and Dr.Kubic had worked out their concept in more detail than former proposals.
There is,however,a major fact that explains why no one has built a carbon-dioxide-to-gasoline factory:it requires a great deal of energy.
According to their analysis, their concept, which would cost about﹩5 billion to build, could produce gasoline at an operating cost of﹩1.40 a gallon and would turn economically practical when the price at the pump hits﹩4.60 a gallon.
Other scientists said the Los Alamos proposal perhaps looked promising but could not evaluate it fully because the details has not been published."It's definitely worth pursuing,"said Martin I.Hoffert,a professor of physics at New York University."It's not that new an idea.It has a couple of pieces to it that are interesting."

A.has been popular for so long
B.has been ignored by many people
C.is not appropriate for practice
D.will be put into practice in the near future
65.What is the biggest challenge in realizing the concept Green Freedom?B

Just as I was in the middle of my descent,a gentleman entered the main entrance of the restaurant which right in front of the staircase.I was sure I would be pushed roughly by this man who will want to go up in a hurry.I kept coming down as fast as I could, holding on to the banister (欄桿),instead of my advanced years. My agile daughters were already down, looking up at me worriedly, hoping I would reach them before the stranger strange started up the stairs, knowing I was a nervous sort.
Nearly reaching them,I noticed the man still standing near the door.I reached my daughters and passed the stranger at the entrance door which he kept holding open.I looked back thinking he was still at the door, deciding whether to go in or find another less crowded place.I saw him going up the stairs, two at a time.I told my daughters about it and all three of us felt had that we did not even thank the courteous gentleman who was actually holding the door open for us ladies to pass through before going up.

18.Sugar is so much a part of our modern life that we only really think about it when,for some reason,we cannot obtain it.It has been known to man for at least 3,000years,but has come into common use only in modern times.Until quite recently it was considered as a medicine and as a luxury for the very rich only.
Sugar is,then,very important to our civilization.But what exactly is it?Of course,most of us recognize sugar immediately as the sweet material which we put in coffee or cakes.This common form of sugar is derived from two plants:the sugar cane (a type of grass which grows to a height of twenty feet) and the sugar beet (which grows underground).But there are in fact many types of sugar,and the chemist recognizes hundreds of different varieties,each coming from a different source.
About 90% of the sugar is produced as food.Only 10% is used in industry for purposes other than food production.Yet,sugar has great possibilities for use as the basis of chemicals.It can even be used for making plastics.In the future these potential uses will certainly be developed more than in the past.
There are many reasons why we should increase the production of sugar.Most important is that it is one of the most highly concentrated of energy foods.Thus sugar cane and beet produce an average of 7,000,000calories per acre.In this way they have the advantage over potatoes which give only 4,000,000,while the figure for wheat and beans is 2,000,000 each.So three acres of land growing wheat,beans and potatoes give only slightly more energy than one acre of sugar.

56.The heading of Paragraph 1may beB.
A.What Sugar Is
B.Sugar Through the Ages
C.The Advantages of Sugar
D.Present and Future Uses of Sugar
57.The third paragraph emphasizesD.
A.a(chǎn)bout 90% of sugar used as food
B.only 10% of sugar used in industry
C.sugar used for making plastics
D.future uses of sugar
58.The main reason why we should increase the production of sugar is thatD.
A.It tastes sweet
B.We can save plenty of land
C.We can get more food
D.It's one of the most highly concentrated of energy foods.

2.One windy spring day,I observed young people having fun using the wind to fly their kites.Multicolored creations of varying shapes and sizes filled the skies like beautiful birds dashing and dancing in the exciting atmosphere above the earth.As the strong winds blew against the kites,a string kept them in check.
Instead of blowing away with the wind, they arose against it to achieve great heights. They shook and pulled, but the controlling string and the clumsy tail kept them in tow(牽引),facing upward and against
the wind.As the kites struggled and trembled against the string,they seemed to say,"Let me go!Let me go!I want to be free!"They flew beautifully even as they fought the forced restriction of the string.Finally,one of the kites succeeded in breaking loose."Free at last,"it seemed to say."Free to fly with the wind."
Yet freedom from control simply put it at the mercy of an unsympathetic gentle wind.It flew ungracefully to the ground and landed in a twisted mass of weeds and string against a dead bush."Free at last".Free
to lie powerless in the dirt,to be blown helplessly along the ground, and to settle down lifeless against
the first roadblock.
How much like kites we sometimes are. There always exist misfortunes and restrictions, rules to follow
from which we can grow and gain strength.Prohibition(禁令)is a necessary counterpart to the winds
of opposition. Some of us pulled at the rules so hard that we never fly fast to reach the heights we might
have obtained. If we keep all the commandment(戒律),we will never rise high enough to get our tails
off the ground.
Let us each rise to the great heights, recognizing that some of the prohibitions are actually the steady
force that helps us climb and achieve.
