Many hospitals have blood banks. In these banks, blood of all types is stored. When blood is needed, it is taken from the bank. Healthy people then give blood to the bank to replace (取代) the blood that is used. Blood can be kept in the fridge for about three weeks with a kind of chemical.
When people lose much of their blood because of operations or accidents, they may need transfusions(輸血). Some people may need transfusions because of illness. Sometimes only a part of the blood is used for transfusions. Plasma(血漿), the liquid part of the blood , may be given alone. Transfusions of plasma are often given when people have been badly burned.
When a person gets a transfusion, he gets blood of the same type as his. Or there may be a bad reaction(反應(yīng)). To make it safer, before a transfusion is given, the blood to be used must be tested with the blood of the person who is to receive it. This testing is called cross matching of the blood.

Maybe it is true that we do not know what we have got until we lose it, but it is also true that we do not know what we have been missing until it arrives. Giving someone all your love never means that they will love you back. Do not expect love in return; but if it does not, be glad it grows in yours.
It takes an hour to like someone, and a day to love someone, but it takes a lifetime to forget someone. Do not depend on one's appearance, it may not be true. Do not depend on wealth, even that disappears slowly. Depend on someone who makes you smile, because it takes only a smile to make a dark day seem bright.
There are moments in life when you miss someone so much that you just want to pick them from your dreams and hug(擁抱) them.
Dream what you want to dream; go where you want to go; be what you want to be, because you have only one life and one chance to do all the things you want to do.
May you have enough happiness to make you sweet, enough trials(嘗試) to make you strong, enough sadness to keep you human, enough hope to make you happy.
Always put yourself in others' shoes. If you feel that it hurts you, it probably hurts the other person, too.
The happiest people do not necessarily give the best of everything; they just make the most of everything that comes along their way. Happiness waits for those who cry, those who have been hurt, those who have searched, and those who have tired, for only they can enjoy the importance of people who have touched their lives.
The brightest future will always be based on a forgotten past. You cannot go on well in life until you let your past failures and heartaches go off.
When you were born, you were crying and everyone around you was smiling. Live your life so that when you die, you are the one who is smiling and everyone around you is crying.
1.If you put yourself in another's position, ___________.
A. you should depend on wealth
B. you shouldn't do those things that will hurt you and other people
C. you will do what you want to do however dangerous it is to people
D. you should depend on other people.
2.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. If you give someone your love, you are sure that she will give her love to you in return.
B. We often don’t know what we have lost until it happens.
C. If someone accepts your love and he doesn’t give you his love in return, you should be angry with him.
D. If it takes you an hour to love someone, you will easily forget her.
3.In the last paragraph of the passage, the writer is actually telling us that a man in the world should be one who __________.
A. can accept the suggestions made by others
B. can live happily and forget the past
C. does good to the people and wins their respect
D. has made a lot of money for himself when he dies

You can’t always know when there’ll be a heavy rain or when to take an umbrella with you. But designer Mikhail Belyaev doesn’t think that forgetting to check the weather report before going out should cause you to get wet in the rain. That’s why he created the Lampbrella—a lamp post (燈柱)with its own “umbrella”.
The designer says he came up with the idea after watching people get wet on streets in Russia. “Once, I was driving on a central Saint Petersburg street and saw people trying to hide from the rain under the street lamps. I thought it would be a good idea to have a Lampbrella built into a street lamp.” he said.
The Lampbrella is a street lamp fitted with an umbrella canopy(遮蓬). It has an inside electric motor(電動(dòng)馬達(dá)) which can open or close the umbrella freely. The Lampbrella will offer people cover whenever it starts raining. After three minutes of not being used the canopy is closed.
According to the designer, the Lampbrella would move at a very low speed in order not to cause harm to people. What’s more, it would be grounded to protect from a possible lightning hit. Each Lampbrella would offer enough cover for several people. Being 2 meters off the ground, it would only be a danger for the tallest man.
While there are no plans to take the Lampbrella into production(生產(chǎn)), Belyaev says he recently introduced his creation to one Moscow company, and insists his creation could be on any street where a lot of people walk but there are no canopies to provide cover.
1.According to the passage, for what purpose did Belyaev create the Lampbrella?
A. To know when there’ll be a heavy rain.
B. To check the weather report.
C. To protect people from the rain.
D. To remind people to take an umbrella.
2.What can we learn from Belyaev’s words in Paragraph 2?
A. His creation was encouraged by an experience.
B. It rains a lot in the city of Saint Petersburg.
C. Street lamps are protected by canopies.
D. He enjoyed taking walks in the rain.
3.What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. The designer will open a company to produce his creation.
B. The Lampbrella could be put into production at once.
C. The designer is confident that his creation is practical.
D. The Lampbrella would be put on show in Moscow.
4.The best title of this passage is .
A. A special umbrella - Lampbrella
B. Why Belyaev created the Lampbrella
C. A special light - Lampbrella
D. Where the Lampbrella first appear

How could we tell time if there were no watches or clocks anywhere in the world?
The sun was probably the world’s first “clock”, except in the far north, where the Eskimos (愛(ài)斯基摩人) live. There, it’s dark most of the winter, and light most of the summer. But in most of the world, people used the sun for a clock. Even today, if you don’t have a clock, you still know that when the sun shines, it’s day, and when it’s dark, it’s night. The sun can also tell you if it’s morning, noon, or afternoon.
People near the sea can tell time from the tides(潮汐). In the daytime, for about six hours, the water rises higher and higher on the beach. And then it goes down and down for about six hours. The same thing happens again at night. There are two high tides and two low tides every 24 hours.
Seamen on a ship learn how to tell time by looking at the moon and the stars. The whole sky is their clock. In some places in the world the wind comes up at about the same time every day or changes direction or stops blowing. In these places the wind can be the clock.
A sand(沙) clock is an even better clock. If you had fine dry sand in a glass shaped like the one in the picture, you would have what is called an hourglass. The sand in the hourglass goes from the top part to the bottom(底部) part in exactly one hour. When people turn over the hourglass, the sand will take another hour to go back again.
1.How many ways does the passage show us to tell time including the watches and clocks?
A. 8 B. 7 C. 5 D. 4
2.The Eskimos in the far north can’t use the sun for a clock because ____________.
A. They know very little about the sun
B. The sun there never goes down in winter
C. It’s too cold for them to go out to watch the sun
D. It has long dark winters and long light summers
3.The writer thinks ____________.
A. there are no more than two tides in a day
B. a sand clock is a better clock than the tide
C. only the moon is a good “clock” for seamen
D. the wind can be a clock all over the world
4.In which column(欄目) of a newspaper can you most possibly read this passage?
A. Science. B. News.
C. Advertisements. D. Sports.
