You can’t always know when there’ll be a heavy rain or when to take an umbrella with you. But designer Mikhail Belyaev doesn’t think that forgetting to check the weather report before going out should cause you to get wet in the rain. That’s why he created the Lampbrella—a lamp post (燈柱)with its own “umbrella”.
The designer says he came up with the idea after watching people get wet on streets in Russia. “Once, I was driving on a central Saint Petersburg street and saw people trying to hide from the rain under the street lamps. I thought it would be a good idea to have a Lampbrella built into a street lamp.” he said.
The Lampbrella is a street lamp fitted with an umbrella canopy(遮蓬). It has an inside electric motor(電動(dòng)馬達(dá)) which can open or close the umbrella freely. The Lampbrella will offer people cover whenever it starts raining. After three minutes of not being used the canopy is closed.
According to the designer, the Lampbrella would move at a very low speed in order not to cause harm to people. What’s more, it would be grounded to protect from a possible lightning hit. Each Lampbrella would offer enough cover for several people. Being 2 meters off the ground, it would only be a danger for the tallest man.
While there are no plans to take the Lampbrella into production(生產(chǎn)), Belyaev says he recently introduced his creation to one Moscow company, and insists his creation could be on any street where a lot of people walk but there are no canopies to provide cover.

A. To know when there’ll be a heavy rain.
B. To check the weather report.

A. His creation was encouraged by an experience.
B. It rains a lot in the city of Saint Petersburg.
C. Street lamps are protected by canopies.
D. He enjoyed taking walks in the rain.
3.What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. The designer will open a company to produce his creation.
B. The Lampbrella could be put into production at once.
C. The designer is confident that his creation is practical.
D. The Lampbrella would be put on show in Moscow.
4.The best title of this passage is .

Politeness(禮貌) is a mark of civilization. The sooner children learn this, the better. In any case, a lot can be completed by a smile and good manners.
Like it or not, our adult lives will be consumed(消費(fèi),消耗) by the struggle for money, but we don’t make an effort to teach children how to manage it. So our schools have a duty to teach them this ability from the beginning.
If we agree that the use of education is to prepare us for life, then there is very little time to waste. So, while we can, we ought to try our best to teach children something really useful. Here is what our schools should teach.
We’re likely to accept something we are told, but that’s not what educated people do. Educated people are reasonable (理性的)and they look at facts. If our schools teach nothing else, they should at least teach critical(批判性的)thinking.
Children should learn to take care of their health. They should know that if they eat junk food(垃圾食品), they will become fat and unhealthy. They should be very clear about what happens to their bodies when they drink or smoke.
All of us are part of society. We have rights and duties. We ought to understand what they are. We have to know a little bit of our history and geography, because we need to have an environment in which to connect to the people around us.
How will we test students on these? We can’t. But that’s not a reason to avoid teaching what is important. Our schools should spend every moment they have telling this to our children: “This is life, this is what you are going to face, and this is how you deal with it.”

閱讀填空 先通讀下文,根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容完成表格中所缺信息,每空限填一詞。
What do you read when you are travelling by train or bus? What are other people reading? Perhaps a woman sitting near you is reading a love story. A man is reading a serious biography(自傳) about a president. And there’s a student reading an English textbook.
What do their choices(選擇) say about them? Do you think you can know them by what they are reading? I have got to tell you that your feelings of them may be quite wrong. The woman reading the love story could be a lawyer. She just wants a light read to take her mind off work. The man reading the biography wants you to think that he is very clever. The student reading the textbook isn’t a student at all. She’s an English teacher.
Publishers(出版商) know that some people care what they read on trains or buses and so they put out different types of covers. For example, books about Harry Potter have a cartoon cover for young readers and then another more serious cover for grown-ups.
So next time you are on a train, look around and see what other people are reading, but don’t jump to any conclusions(結(jié)論). You will be wrong maybe.
Here is a sentence that you could say, “Don’t judge(判斷) a book by its cover”.
