What are good manners?

We say that a person has good manners if he or she is kind and helpful to others. Everyone likes a person with good manners but no one likes a person with bad manners. But what are good manners? Here are some examples.

He never laughs at people when they are in trouble. He tries to help them. He is always kind, either to people or animals. When people are waiting for a bus, or in a post office, he takes his turn. He does not push to the front of the queue. On the bus, he gives his seat to an older person or a lady who is standing. He stands up when speaking to a lady or an older person, and he does not sit down until the other person is seated. He does not talk too much himself. He does not talk loudly or laugh loudly in public. When eating, he doesn't speak with his mouth full of food.

However, different countries have different manners. Before going into a house in some Asian countries, it is good manners to take off you shoes. In European countries this is not done. A guest in a Chinese house never finishes a drink. He leaves a little to show that he has had enough. In England, a guest always finishes a drink to show that he has enjoyed it.

Experts(專家) say that students usually need eight to ten hours’ sleep at night, but most Chinese parents are usually glad to see their children study late. They will think their children work very hard. But not all parents are happy about this. Once a mother told us that every morning her 10-year-old boy put up one finger with his eyes still closed, begging for one more minute to sleep. Like thousands of students “early birds” in China, he has to get up before six every morning.

A report shows that without a good night’s sleep, students seem to be weaker than they should be. Many students have fallen asleep during class at one time or another. Too much home-work is not the only reason why students stay up late. Some watch TV or play the computer games late into the night.

Experts have said that students should develop good study habits. So some students never study late, they are able to work well in class.

1How many hours do the students need to sleep at night?

2Why do many students fall asleep in class?

3What’s the meaning of “early birds” in the first paragraph?

4What do the students seem to be if they have not a good night’s sleep?

5Should the students get up early according to the experts?
