Since 1946, one of the most important inventions has been the computer. It 1 changed our lives greatly.
The first computer was built 2 1946. It was as 3 as a room and very difficult and slow to use. But since the invention of silicon "chip"(硅片), computers have become smaller, easier and 4 to operate. Some computers are as small as TV sets. Some can 5 be made smaller than a book. And computers are getting smaller and smaller all the time. Who knows what the computers of tomorrow will be 6 ?
There are several 7 why the computer is useful to us. First, a lot of information can be put into computers. Second, the computer works very quickly— 8 times faster than a man—and it will not be 9 . Third, modern computers can be built into other kinds of machines, like radios, cars and planes. So today people can spend less time 10 more work with a computer.

Sometimes I doubt(懷疑) whether there is love between my parents. Every day they are busy trying to make money. They don’t act in the romantic ways that I read about in books or I see on TV. They never say, “ I love you.” It’s not their style.
One day, my mother was sewing(縫) a quilt. I sat beside her.
“ Mom, I have a question to ask you,” I said after a while.
“ What?” she replied, still doing her work.
“Is there love between you and Dad?” I asked her in a very low voice.
She stopped her work and raised her head. Then she bowed her head and went on sewing.
I thought I had hurt her. At last I heard my mother say: “Susan, look at this thread(線). Sometimes it appears(出現(xiàn)), but most of it disappears in the quilt. It makes the quilt strong. If life is a quilt, then love should be a thread. It can hardly be seen anywhere, but it’s really there.”
I listened carefully but I didn’t understand her until the next spring. My father suddenly got seriously sick. My mother had to stay with him in the hospital for a month.
After they got back, she helped my father walk slowly down the country road every day. My father had never been so gentle.
“Dad, how are you feeling now?” I asked him one day.
“Susan, don’t worry about me,” he said gently, “ I just like walking with your mom.”
Once I thought love meant flowers, gifts and sweet kisses. But from this experience, I understand that love is just a thread in the quilt of our life. Love is inside, making life strong and warm.

First, most Americans never travel to other countries. The United States is a very large country. Americans can travel a long distance and don’t leave the United States. They do not need to learn a second language.
Second, one of the countries next to the United States is Canada. Most people in Canada speak English. Some Americans live near Canada. They travel there often. But they do not have to learn a new language.

Alexander Graham Bell was a British man who was a teacher to people who could not hear. He was born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1847 and went to school in Edinburgh and London. People who can not hear any sounds at all are called deaf people, and Alexander became interested in helping them to learn to speak. He taught people how to use their mouths to make the sounds needed for talking.
Bell’s family moved to Canada in 1870 and to the USA in 1871. For several years he taught the people who could not speak in Boston. But at the same time he was developing a way to use electricity to send the sounds of talking along a wire, and he made the first telephone in June, 1875. He worked hard in his workshop for six months with his helper Tom Watson. Finally, he spoke these famous words slowly into the telephone, “Mr. Watson, come here. I want to see you.” and Watson came to him.
The telephone developed quickly in the USA over the next few years. The Bell Telephone Company started in 1877, and in 1878 the first telephone centre was built in New York. More than 150,000 people had telephones in their homes ten years later. Alexander Graham Bell was a kind man and spent much of his money and time during the rest of his life helping deaf people.
