You want to know about my staying in America, right?Well, to tell you the truth, it is really an eyeopening experience to study here

In China, I had English classes five times a week since fifth gradeHowever, I didn’t know how different textbook English could be from everyday English until I came to Hotchkiss School, Connecticut

When I first studied English, I was told to say, ”I am fine” when people say “How are you?” But in the US, I found that people say, “I am good” or “I’m tired”

One day, someone greeted me with “What’s up?” It made me confusedI thought for a moment and then smiled because I didn’t know what to say

Since then, I have discovered more and more differences between Chinese and US cultures

To my surprise, US girls spend a lot of time in the burning sun to get a tan(曬黑)However, in China, girls try every possible way to get their skin paler, or “whiter”

I was also surprised by how hardworking US students are

In China, schoolwork is almost everything, so we study hard and that’s itBut here, a “good” student gets good grades, does a lot of for the public and plays sports or music

The kids here are so talented, I am starting to be sorry that I gave up playing the piano at an early age and that I have never thought about sports

Saying no can be very difficult. People who are very shy often have little confidence. It is very hard for them to say no. They would feel shy when they say no, but doing things that they don't want to do will make them unhappy.
A simple and direct "No" is the best way. If you want to explain, you can keep it simple. Just say, "No, I've already made plans for this time" or "No, I'm not free at that time."
Other indirect but polite ways of saying no:
       ● Sorry, I can't do this right now.
       ● I'm afraid I can't, but thank you for asking.
       ● Please accept (接受) that I cannot come.
       ● I'd rather not.
       To say no you should:
       ● Start the sentence with the word "No".
       ● Shake (搖晃) your head when you say no to make sure others understand. Your voice should be clear and direct.
Sometimes it is difficult to say no. You can try to reply and explain in the following way:
"Sorry. I would have taken care of your cat next weekend, but I will be going out. I know it will be hard to find someone to take care of the cat. I will try to help you next time." Remember that: you have the right (權(quán)利) to say no!

Do you ever feel a stomachache during a test? Are you ever so worried about something that you even have a headache or can’t sleep at night? If so, then you know what stress is. Stress is what you feel when you are worried about something. You may feel angry, sad, scared, or afraid —all this can give you a stomachache or a headache.

There are different kinds of stress. Some kinds of stress are good and others are bad. Good stress may happen when someone asks you to answer questions in class or when you have to give a report. This kind of stress can help you to finish things better.

However, bad stress can happen if the stress lasts too long. You may not feel well if a family member is sick, if you’re having problems at school, or if anything else makes you upset every day. That kind of stress isn’t going to help you.

The best way to keep stress away is to have a balanced life. If you get enough sleep and food, and if you exercise and leave time for fun, you’ll feel less stressed.

Can you swim? Do you like swimming? Well, how can you learn to swim? I think the best way is to go into the water and learn. Listening and speaking are very important for beginners. We can listen to English programs on radio. You may just understand a few words. It doesn’t matter. Just be relaxed, try to catch every word.
Somebody may be a good listener, but he is afraid to speak because he’s afraid of making mistakes. You know we sometimes make mistakes when we speak Chinese. Don’t be afraid. We must be brave. If you really want to learn English well, you must try to speak with everyone as long as he knows English. When there’s nobody to talk with, you can talk to yourself in English. It’s interesting and also a good way to practice your spoken English. Remember, the more you speak, the fewer mistakes you’ll make.
Reading and writing are more important for senior(年級(jí)較高的)school students. First we must choose the books we’re interested in. A lot of reading will improve your language sense. This is very important.
