Panda Journey

任務(wù)型閱讀

Many teenagers in Taiwan are anxiously counting down the days to the arrival of two giant pandas from the other side of the Straits.

A group of 17 animal experts came to Wolong Nature Reserve (臥龍自然保護(hù)區(qū)) in Sichuan Province. They picked their ideal animals and learned more about artificial breeding ( 人工繁殖 ), disease prevention and daily care last week.

'I cannot wait any longer to see the lovely animals. I've seen them many times on TV. Maybe 1 will even feed them bamboo shoots with my own hands! Isn't that exciting said Lin Heqian, a Senior student from Private Chunghsin School in Taiwan.

Chen Runsheng is the secretary — general of the China Wildlife Protection Association. He told the experts that it is a long—term wish of the mainland to be able to present a panda to

the people of Taiwan. Mainland pandas' resettlement (重新安置) and growth in Taiwan will surely bring the people happiness and fun. Chen added.

The selection of giant pandas t, be sent to Taiwan started at the end of August at the Wolong Nature Reserve.

Several zoos are still fighting to become the new home of the two pandas in Taiwan. And the pandas" home had not yet been picked. Taipei Zoo are talking about building them a home there.

The mainland announced its presentation of a pair of pandas to the island in May. But it Kerns that teenagers in Taiwan will still have to wait for half a year. That is because the new enclosure (圍欄) for giant pandas in Taipei Zoo will not finished until the end of this year, according to Chen Baozhong, president of the zoo.

If everything else goes smoothly, the panda will be on the island next March.

Two Chinese spacecrafts successfully completed China’s first space docking (對(duì)接) early November 3, 2011, which has taken the country a step closer to building its own space station.

Nearly two days after its launch, the unmanned spacecraft Shenzhou VIII docked with the space lab module Tiangong I more than 343 km above the earth surface. Shenzhou VIII and Tiangong I took apart after flying together for 12 days. On the 14th of November, the two spacecrafts finished the second docking. Then Shenzhou VIII parted from Tiangong I again and returned to the earth safely on the 17th. Tiangong I is still traveling around the earth in the space, waiting for the arrival of Shenzhou IX and X and so on in the near future.

That marked another great leap for China’s space program and made China the third country in the world, after the United States and Russia, master the space docking technique (空間對(duì)接技術(shù)).

The world’s first space docking was achieved in 1966, when the manned U.S, spacecraft Gemini 8 docked with an unmanned Agena Target Vehicle. Space docking is necessary to explore space beyond Earth’s orbit (軌道). “The capability increases China’s ability to act independently in space, as well as its ability to work together with others,” said Gregory Kulacki, a U.S. space scientist and senior analyst.

“With the success of its first space docking, China is now equipped with the basic technology and ability required for the construction of a space station,” said Zhou Jianping, chief designer of China’s manned space program.” The country is on its way to building a permanent manned space station around 2020.”
