Will you have to do a lot of homework every evening? Will your English classes be interesting? Who will teach you? Maybe you have lots of questions before school starts. Well, I want to give you some good advice about these questions.

First, keep calm(平靜). Don't worry about all the questions you have. Put your heart into learning, and you will certainly find something you are interested in.

Second, try your best to finish your homework quickly. Don't spend a lot of time on it. Do as much reading and writing in English as possible. Don't stay up(熬夜) late, or you won't be able to study well the next day

Third, invent your own study methods instead of copying or repeating others'. If you can remember new words in your way, tell your teachers you don’t want to study new words by copying them again and again. Jamal’s science teacher asked students to research a type of renewable energy and then writes something about their findings for class. Jamal talked about wind power.

Some scientists think wind power as a renewable energy source.

Renewable energy is a resource that can be created faster than

 it is consumed. (消耗)

Using wind power is not a new idea. Sailboats have used wind

power for thousands of years. Another example of wind power is the

windmill (風(fēng)車). Windmills used blades(葉片)to catch the wind while

a sailboat uses its tails. As the wind turns the blades, power is created.

Windmills use this power to get water from lakes or rivers.

Today, wind turbines (風(fēng)輪機) make electrical power for us. Wind turbines are made after the windmill. Wind turbines are made of strong durable materials that won’t wear out over time. To get large amounts of power, hundreds of wind turbines are placed in one location called a wind farm.

In Texas, some landowners in windy areas build their own wind system or lease their land to wind companies. This industry created many new jobs. In fact, the state of Texas is one of the largest wind energy producers in the country.

However, one of the biggest disadvantages of wind power is that its output cannot be always gained because not every day is windy. Researchers are looking for effective ways to store enough energy for later use. Cities and towns cannot only rely on wind. Coy Harris, Executive director of Texas Wind Power Center, says "We are going to still have to have coal-fired plants and everything else because people still want to have electricity even when the wind is not blowing,"

51. We know from the text that ________ make electrical power for people.

A. wind power is not so important                     B. people don’t like windy days

C. wind is not always blowing             D. people build their own wind system

53. What does the underlined word durable probably mean?

A. 耐用的                                      B.堅固的

C. 實在的                                  D. 干燥的

July 21st, 2007 was a typical English summer’s day – it rained for 24 hours! As usual, I rushed home from work at midday to check on the house. Nothing was amiss. By the time I left work at 5 pm, however, the road into our village was flooded (淹沒的). Our house had never been flooded but, as I opened the front door, a wave of water greeted me. Thank God the kids weren’t with me, because the house was 5 feet deep in water. We lost everything downstairs. And the plaster had to be torn off the walls, ceilings pulled down.

At first we tried to push on through. We didn’t want to move the children out of home. So we camped upstairs. We put a sheet of plastic across the floor to protect us from being wet. But after three months, we felt very sick, so we moved to a wooden house in a park. The house was small, but at first we were all just happy to be in a new place. Unluckily, things took longer than expected. What surprised me most was how much I missed being part of a community (社區(qū)). We had lived in a friendly village with good neighbours, and I’d never thought how much I’d miss that. Although our situation was very bad, it’s difficult to feel too sorry for yourself when you look at what’s happening elsewhere.

We moved back home in August. With December coming, there’s reconstruction(重建)work to be done, so it’s difficult to prepare for Christmas. But I can’t wait- I’m going to throw a party for our friends in the village to say thanks for their support. This year, I won’t need any gifts-living away from home for months has made me realize how little we actually need or miss all the things we have. Although we are replacing things, there’s really no rush-we have our home back, and that’s the main thing.

53 What does the underlined word “amiss” in Paragraph I mean?

A. Wrong.                    B. Missing.                   C. Right.               D. Normal.

54. We can learn from the passage that the family _____.

A. was sick of staying downstairs

B. stayed away for nearly 10 months

C. was happy to live in the wooden house

D. did not deal well with the trouble during the flood

55. What does the writer mainly want to express by telling her story?

A. She valued human feelings more than before.

B. She realized she almost didn’t need anything.

C. She found Christmas gifts could be replaced easily.

D. She thought her own home was the most important.
