It is known that most people spend one third of their lives sleeping. So sleeping is important to our health and daily lives. But the problem is that for most people, especially office workers, it is not easy to get enough sleep. For centuries, people have been troubled by insomnia. There are three ways to deal with it
Pay attention to your daily diet!
How well you sleep is closely connected to your daily diet. If you eat fat or hard-to-digest food for supper or eat just before you sleep, it will keep keeping you awake. What should be on your daily menu? For supper, you can choose something low-fat and digestible like fish, chicken or lean meat, rice and wheat. All the foods mentioned above can soothe the nerves(舒緩神經(jīng)). Avoid foods that cause gas such as potato, corn, bread, carbonic acid(碳酸)drinks. If you still can not sleep well after cutting out these harmful foods, try adding some foods that will make you sleepy
Create a good sleeping environment
A good sleeping environment includes comfortable pajamas, a soft quilt, and most importantly, a comfortable bed.
Do something relaxing
In order to get a good night's sleep, you should not only relax your body, but also your mind. Try to do something to relax your mind before going to bed. Listening to soft music, reading or watching some light TV for half an hour before going to bed is a good way to make you feel sleepy. If you still can't sleep, try some exercise like walking or jogging to get rid of stress and increase your blood circulation(血液循環(huán)). Also taking a bath or soaking(浸泡)your feet in warm water can help your blood circulation and relax your body.

About 500 years ago, the Spanish explorer Christopher Columbus proved the Earth was round. Now American author Thomas Friedman tells us the Earth is flat in his bestseller: The World Is Flat: A Brief History of the Twenty-First Century.
If he is not joking, then why is the world flat? Friedman said it comes from technological forces. Because of the Internet and the World Wide Web, he believes geographical difficulties are disappearing. People and companies around the world can work together or against each other on the same level.
Bill Gates explains the meaning of this change best. Thirty years ago, he tells Friedman, if you had to choose between being born a gifted person in Shanghai and a common person in Poughkeepsie (A city in southeast New York), you would have chosen Poughkeepsie because your chances of living a successful life were much greater there. "Now," Gates says, "I would rather be a gifted person born in China than a common one born in Poughkeepsie." This shows that success today depends more on ability than on address.
Globalization(全球化), as he calls it, is driven by those persons: free writers and totally new businesses all over the world, especially in India and China. They can fight not just for low-wage producing but, increasingly, for the highest-end research and design(設(shè)計) work as well.
Big companies have played another important role in this globalization process. They move their factories from one country to another to cut costs. It's usual now for an engineer in China to be working for an American company. The Internet keeps them in close touch with their American workmates. People everywhere, from the US to China, have standardized procedures(標(biāo)準化過程) for getting their work done.
The Reuters News Agency provides a good example. The company moved its financial(財經(jīng)的) operations from London and New York to India. The Indian workers have the necessary technical skills. But the pays and office costs are less than one-fifth of what they would be in New York or London.
53. What do you know about Friedman according to the passage?
A. He is a fool by saying the world is flat.
B. He looks at the world with a technological eye.
C. He is as wise as Bill Gates, and works well with Gates.
D. He thinks Christopher Columbus’s idea about the earth is no longer correct.
54. Which of the following is an example of “globalization”?
A. The Reuters News Agency moved its financial operations to India.
B. People and companies can work together or not on different levels.
C. Totally new businesses are able to fight just for low-cost producing.
D. People would rather choose to be a common person in Poughkeepsie.
55. What’s the best title for the passage?
A. Bill Gates and Friedman. B. Friedman and His Bestseller.
C. Why the 21st Century World Flat. D. Globalization and Bill Gates’ choices.
When disaster (災(zāi)難) happens, you might find yourself without water, gas and electricity. You might even need to leave your home right away. 8o you are supposed to plan for the bad situations before the disaster comes. Here are some suggestions:
First, have a family meeting. Plan a way to get your family members together if they can't find each other after the disaster. Choose two places for everyone to go to if it isn't safe to return home. The first should be near your house. You can go there in an emergency(緊急情況) like a fire. The second meeting place should be outside your neighborhood.
Next, choose a person outside your area who can help your family get in touch with each other. After a disaster, it is often easier to communicate over a long-distance call than a local one. The person can pass messages between your family members.
Then, get a family disaster kit ready. It should include things your family needs. It can help you survive (生存) at least for three days like bread, water, medicine and things like that. Put them in a bag so you can carry it if you leave in a hurry. When doing it, remember that different people have different needs. Include special things necessary for elderly or young members of your family.
Finally, practice your emergency plan, and update (更新) it as necessary.
