What science fiction (story), once told of other worlds far away, is now a fact. Astronomers (experts at the science of the universe) prove another solar (of the sun) system like ours with some planets in the constellation(星座)Andromeda.

Geoffrey Marcy is a professor of astronomy and physics at San Francisco State University and says, “What we have found now, for the first time ever, is indeed a fully-grown system of planets around the star Upsilon Andromeda. It appears to have three planets, one close in, one at a middle distance, and one farther out.” The star is slightly larger than our sun. The planets are huge, like our Jupiter(木星).

Marcy’s partner in this research, Debra Fischer, describes the solar system, “Here’s the inner planet that goes around every 46 days, the middle planet that goes around every 242 days, and then the outer planet that goes around every three and a half to four years.”

Astronomically, it’s not far away, 44 light years. The sun of that solar system, Upsilon Andromeda, is so near and bright that it can be seen by using no equipment during summer and fall.

For twelve years astronomers searched the skies in the belief that if our sun has planets around it, surely others do, too. Geoffrey Marcy says, “And then starting three and a half years ago, we began finding for the first time planets singly, one planet here around one star.”

“When I look up at the stars now at night, I can imagine easily that every one of them has planets around them,” says Debra Fischer.

It was a tremble in the star that led Marcy to the planets. “The star rocks around due to the gravity(引力)of the planet much like a dog owner gets pulled around by a little dog.”

Can they support life? We don’t know, because present technology is not advanced enough to determine what the planets are made of. That, Marcy says, is astronomy’s next challenge.

60.What’s the relation between Andromeda (A), Upsilon Andromeda system (U) and the mentioned planets (P)?

       A.                                                         B.

       C.                                                         D.

61.According to Debra Fischer, in the new solar system,         .

A.the farther a planet is from the star, the longer it takes to go around the star

B.the larger a planet is, the shorter it takes to go around the star

C.it takes all the planets around three and a half to four years to go around the star

D.the planets move around the star at uneven(不勻)speed

62.What led to Marcy’s discovery of the planets?

A.That he found a dog owner was pulled by his dog.

       B.The tremble of Upsilon Andromeda.

       C.That any planet has gravity.

D.That he believes any star has its planets.

63.We can infer that the scientists are         .

A.to find out whether the planets can support life

B.to find means to communicate with the living beings on the planets

C.to find means to travel to the planets

D.soon to be able to answer the question of whether there is life on these planets

Many people are interested in family history, an area of study called genealogy (家譜學(xué)). Most genealogy experts have heard about the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah. The Library claims to have the largest collection of genealogical records in the world. Shirley Griffith has more about this unusual research center.

The Family History Library has many records to help people search for information about their family histories. It has birth, marriage and death records from religious groups and governments. The collection includes official population, court and property records. It also includes burial records, ship passenger lists and published family histories.

The Family History Library has information from almost every area of the world. Most records are from 1550 through 1920. These records include the names of more than two thousand million people who have died. The library has few records of living persons.

The Family History Library is operated by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The church has been gathering family history records around the world for more than one hundred years. The group urges (催促) its members to study the lives of early family members as a religious requirement.

The Family History Library is open to the public every day except Sunday and some holidays. Visitors are invited to use its books and other materials. Library officials say it is one of the most popular places for visitors in Utah. About two thousand four hundred people use the library each day.

Individuals, families and private groups have given some of their records to the library. The library bought other records from governments. All the information is gathered with the approval (批準(zhǔn)) of governments or officials who supervise (監(jiān)督) the records.

The library copies many records to a kind of film that can be read with special equipment. It is known as microfilm. The collection is always expanding. Today, Church representatives are making copies of important records around the world.

Many people find it difficult to travel to Utah to use the Family History Library. So, the Church has set up more than three thousand Family History Centers in seventy-five countries around the world.

Britain’s oldest man made his first visit to London yesterday at the age of 101. Mr. John Evans had never found the time or money to make the trip from his home in Forestfach, near Swansea. But, when British Rail offered him an all-expense-paid birthday treat to the capital he just could not refuse.

He arrived at Paddington Station and smartly turned out in his best suit, favorite Panama hat and a red rose in his buttonhole. “It’s very exciting. There’s no doubt about it.” he said.

Until yesterday he had never been far from home, except for one trip to Aberdeen. “But I’ve been on the seas to that faraway land called Ilfracombe 21 miles from home,” he joked.

Mr. Evans, who spent 60 years working as a miner in South Wales, almost made the journey to London once before, at the turn of the century. “There was a trip to the White City but it was ten shillings return from Swansea---too much I thought. All my money went to the family then,” he said.

During the next two days Mr. Evans will be taken on a short tour of London to see the sights. Top of his list is a visit to the House of Parliament organized by his MP, Mr Gareth Wardell.

The only arrangement he does not care for is the wheelchair provided for him if he gets tired. “I don’t like the chair---people will think I am getting old,” he said.

His secret for a long and healthy life has been well publicized ---no wine, no tobacco and no anger.

Before setting off from Swansea with his 76-year-old son, Amwell, he said jokingly, “I’m glad to see they’ve given me a return ticket.”

67.The very reason that Mr. Evans didn’t go to see the world is that _______.

A. he had already been on the seas to Ilfracombe

B. he was too busy to go too far away from home

C. he couldn’t afford both the time and the money

D. he believed “East or west, home is the best.”

68.Mr. Evans didn’t like the wheelchair simply because ______.

A. he was not used to traveling in it B. the wheelchair was of poor quality and not easy to operate

C. he actually preferred walking to sitting in it at home

D. he thought he was still young enough to manage the trip

69.Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?

A. Mr. Evans had to work hard to raise his family when young.

B. The trip of London excited Mr. Evans very much

C. Mr Evans could not really enjoy the trip because of his age.

D. Humor was one of Mr. Evans’ characters.

70.The probable explanation to Mr. Evans’ long life lies in _______.

A. his good living habits  B. his hard working for the family

C. his sticking to his hometown D. his living conditions near the Swansea

E

When we worry about who might be spying on our private lives, we usually think about the Federal agents. But the private sector outdoes the government every time. It's Linda Tripp, not the FBI, who is facing charges under Maryland's laws against secret telephone taping. It's our banks, not the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), that pass our private financial data to telemarketing firms.

Consumer activists are pressing Congress for better privacy laws without much result so far. The legislators lean toward letting business people track our financial habits virtually at will. As an example of what's going on, consider U.S. Bancorp, which was recently sued for deceptive practices by the state of Minnesota. According to the lawsuit, the bank supplied a telemarketer called Member Works with sensitive customer data such as names, phone numbers, bank-account and credit-card numbers, Social Security numbers, account balances and credit limits.

With these customer lists in hand, Member Works started dialing for dollars - selling dental plans, videogames, computer software and other products and services. Customers who accepted a "free trial offer" had 30 days to cancel. If the deadline passed, they were charged automatically through their bank or credit-card accounts. U.S. Bancorp collected a share of the revenues. Customers were doubly deceived, the lawsuit claims. They didn't know that the bank was giving account numbers to Member Works. And if customers asked, they were led to think the answer was no.

The state sued Member Works separately for deceptive selling. The company defends that it did anything wrong. For its part, U.S. Bancorp settled without admitting any mistakes. But it agreed to stop exposing its customers to non-financial products sold by outside firms. A few top banks decided to do the same. Many other banks will still do business with Member Works and similar firms.

And banks will still be mining data from your account in order to sell you financial products, including things of little value, such as credit insurance and credit-card protection plans. You have almost no protection from businesses that use your personal accounts for profit. For example, no federal law shields "transaction and experience" information - mainly the details of your bank and credit-card accounts. Social Security numbers are for sale by private firms. They've generally agreed not to sell to the public. But to businesses, the numbers are an open book. Self-regulation doesn't work. A firm might publish a privacy-protection policy, but who enforces it?

Take U.S. Bancorp again. Customers were told, in writing, that "all personal information you supply to us will be considered confidential." Then it sold your data to Member Works. The bank even claims that it doesn't "sell" your data at all. It merely "shares" it and reaps a profit. Now you know.

71. Contrary to popular belief, the author finds that spying on people's privacy _______ .

A. is mainly carried out by means of secret taping

B. has been intensified with the help of the IRS

C. is practiced exclusively by the FBI

D. is more prevalent in business circles

72. We know from the passage that ______  .

A. legislators are acting to pass a law to provide better privacy protection

B. most states are turning a blind eye to the deceptive practices of private businesses

C. the state of Minnesota is considering drawing up laws to protect private information

D. lawmakers are inclined to give a free hand to businesses to inquire into customers' buying habits

73. When the "free trial" deadline is over, you'll be charged without notice for a product or service if ______.

A. you fail to cancel it within the specified period

B. you happen to reveal your credit card number

C. you find the product or service unsatisfactory

D. you fail to apply for extension of the deadline

74. Businesses do not regard information concerning personal bank accounts as private because

_________.

A. its revelation will do no harm to consumers under the current protection policy

B. it is considered "transaction and experience" information unprotected by law

C. it has always been considered an open secret by the general public

D. its sale can be brought under control through self-regulation

75. We can infer from the passage that ________.

A. banks will have to change their ways of doing business

B. privacy protection laws will soon be enforced

C. consumers' privacy will continue to be invaded

D. "free trial" practice will eventually be banned

寫作

Dear Jack,

How nice to hear from you again. You want to know what is going on in our school. In short, things have been improving since the school began to carry out exploring study. In the past, the teachers always kept on explaining the points in class. We students just listened and took notes. But now we often discuss and try to solve the problems raised by the teachers or ourselves. After class, we enjoyed different kinds of activities instead of doing endless homework. For example, we can read what we are interested in. We ccan go to the library or surf the Internet for various kinds of information.

In a word, we are now masters of study, and we are happy.

Best wishes.

                                                                   Yours,

                                                                   Li Ming
