第四節(jié)  閱讀理解  (共20小題,滿分40分)

Any mistake made in the printing of a stamp raises its value to stamp collectors. A mistake on one inexpensive postage stamp has made the stamp worth a million and a half times its original value. The mistake was made more than a hundred years ago in the British colony of Mauritius, a small island in the Indian Ocean. In 1847 an order for stamps was sent to a London printer -----Mauritius was to become the fourth country in the world to issue(發(fā)行) stamps.

Before the order was filled and delivered, a ball was planned at Mauritius’ Government House, and stamps were needed to send out the invitations. A local printer was instructed to copy the design for the stamps. He accidentally printed the words “Post Office” instead of “Post Paid” on the several hundred stamps.

Today there are only twenty-six of these misprinted stamps left fourteen One Penny Orange-Reds and twelve Two Penny Blues. Because of the Two Penny Blue’s rareness and age, collectors have paid as much as $16,800 for it.

WHY IS THE SUN  IMPORTANT?

The sun is a huge, hot, bright star. It is important because without it there would be no life on Earth. The sun gives us light and heat.

All living things need light and heat from the sun to live. Plants need light and heat to grow. They use the light from the sun to make food. We cannot make our own food, but plants can. All the food we eat comes from plants in a food chain(鏈)which starts with the sun. For example,

Animals need sunlight, too. Just like us, their food comes from a food chain which begins with the sun and the plants.

   sun→ leaf→ caterpillar(毛蟲(chóng))→bird

   sun→ seaweed(海藻)→small fish→ whale(鯨)

Sunlight means we can see during the day. If there was no sun, it would be dark all the time. Even when the sky is cloudy, the sunlight is very strong and it shines through the clouds.

59. Which words tell us what the sun is like?

   A. Huge.(大的)       B. Hot.         C. Bright.       D. All above.

60. What are the two main things the sun gives us?

    A. Light and heat.    B. Heat and eggs. C. Corn and light. D. Wheat and bread.

61. Why can we still see during the day when the sky is cloudy?

   A. Because we can see all day and all night.

   B. Because the sun can't give us light all day long.

   C. Because the sunlight can shine through the clouds.

   D. Because we can't see at night.

62. All the food we eat comes from ______. And it starts with the _____.

“How can I learn English well?” This is a question many students ask. In my opinion, the most effective way is to learn lessons by heart. If you can recite the text and write it out, you’ve learned it fairly well. And if you can tell, in your own words, what the lesson says you’re a very successful learner indeed. Your English will be quite perfect.

This is a difficult task. However, if you try to learn by heart only part of each lesson, you’ll find it not half so hard as you might have thought. Learning this way, you will make rapid progress. Of course, writing is also necessary. It helps you a lot on our way to success in English.

Equally important is to feel the language. You should be able to laugh at jokes and be shocked at bad news. When using English, try to forget your mother tongue, instead of helping you, your own language gets in your way. So, never try to see English through translation.

64. In the writer’s opinion, the most effective way in learning English is ____.

A. to practise speaking, writing and feeling it

B. to forget your own native language

C. to translate everything into his own language

D. to memorize the English words and grammatical rules

65. “Instead of helping you, your own language gets in your way.” This sentence means that memorizing your own language can ________.

A. help you to study English well       B. stop you learning English well

C. make English easy to learn          D. help you notice mistakes

66. Equally important is to feel the language. “to feel the language” here means________.

A. to get a knowledge of English by touching

B. to be able to read and write English

C. to translate English into your own by imagining

D. to be able to understand and enjoy the language

It was at least two months before Christmas when nine-year-old Almie Rose told her father and me that she wanted a new bicycle. As Christmas drew nearer, her desire for a bicycle seemed to fade(消退), or so we thought. We bought her a lovely doll, and a doll house. Then, much to our surprise, on December 23rd, she said that she “really wanted a bike more than anything else.” But it was just too late. With such a lot of preparations to do for the Christmas dinner we did not have the time to buy our little girl a bike. So, here we were Christmas Eve around 9:00 p.m., with Almie and her six-year-old brother, Dylan, sleeping in their beds. Now we could only think of the bicycle and the disappointment of our child. “What if I make a little bicycle out of clay (泥) and write a note that she could trade(交易,交換 ) the clay bike in for a real bike?” her dad asked. So he spent the next four hours making a tiny clay bike. On Christmas morning, we were excited for Almie to open the little gift box with the beautiful red and white clay bike and the note. Finally, she opened it and read the note aloud. “Does this mean that I can trade in this bike that Daddy made me for a real one?”  I said, “Yes.” Almie had tears in her eyes when she replied, “I could never trade in this beautiful bicycle that Daddy made me.
