III. 閱讀技能

第一節(jié)(共15小題;每小題2分,滿分30分)閱讀短文,根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容,選擇最佳答案.

A.

Taiwan police cannot decide whether to treat it as an extremely clever act of stealing or an even cleverer cheat(詐騙).Either way, it could be a perfect crime(犯罪), because the criminals are birds----homing pigeons.

The crime begins with a telephone message to the owner of a stolen car: if you want the car back, pay some money. Then, the car owner is directed to a park, told where to find a bird cage and how to attach money to the neck of the pigeon inside. Carrying the money in a tiny bag, the pigeon flies off.

There have been at least four such pigeon pick-ups in Changwa. What at first seemed like the work of a clever stay-at-home car thief, however, may in fact be the work of an even lazier and more inventive criminal mind---- one that avoids(避免) not only collecting money but going out to steal the car in the first place. Police officer Chen says that the criminal probably has pulled a double trick: he gets money for things he cannot possibly return. Instead of stealing cars, he lets someone else do it and then waits for the car owner to place an ad in the newspaper asking for help.

The theory is supportd by the fact that, so far, none of the stolen cars have been returned. Also, the amount of money demanded----under 3,000 Taiwanese dollars-----seems too little for a car worth many times more.

Demands for pigeon-delivered money stopped as soon as the press reported the story. And even if they start again, Chen holds little hope of catching the criminal. “We have more important things to do,”he said.

(      )56.After the car owner received a phone call, he ___________.

(     )58.The writer mentions the fact that “none of the stolen cars have been returned” to show ____________.

C.      he has seen the car owners in the park

D.he has trained the pigeons to follow them

B

There is an English saying :“l(fā)aughter is best medicine .”Until recently ,few people took the saying seriously .Now however ,doctors have begun to look into laughter and the effects it has on the human body .They have found that laughter really can improve people’s health .

Tests were carried out to study the effects of laughter on the body .People watched funny films while doctors checked their hearts ,blood pressure ,breathing and muscles .It was found that laughter had similar effects to physical exercise .It increases blood pressure ,the heart beating and breathing ; it also works several groups of muscles in the face ,the stomach ,and even the feet .If laughter exercises the body ,it must be beneficial .

Other tests have shown that laughter appears to be able to reduce the effect of pain on the body .In one experiment doctors produced pain in groups of students who listened to different radio programmes .The group that tolerated(忍耐)the pain for the longest time was the groups which listened to a funny programme .The reason why laughter can reduce pain seems to be that it helps to produce a kind of chemicals in the brain which diminish both stress and pain .

As a result of these discoveries ,some doctors in the United States now hold laughter clinics ,in which they help to improve their patients’ condition by encouraging them to laugh .They have found that even if their patients do not really feel like laughing ,making them smile is enough to produce beneficial effects similar to those caused by laughter .

My house is made of wood , glass and stone .It is also made of software .

If you come to visit ,you’ll probably be surprised when you come in . Someone will give you an electronic PIN (個人身份證號碼) tesoon to wear .This PIN tells the house who and where you are .The house uses this information to give you what you need . When it’s dark outside ,the PIN turns on the lights nearest you ,and then turns them off as you walk away from them .Music moves with you too . If the house knows your favorite music , it plays it .The music seems to be everywhere ,but in fact other people in the house hear different music or no music .If you get a telephone call, only the nearest telephone rings .

Of course , you are also able to tell the house if you want something .There is a home control console(控制臺) , a small machine that turns things on and off around you .

The PIN and the console are new ideas ,but they are in fact like many things we have today .If you want to go to a movie ,you need a ticket .If I give you my car keys ,you can use my car . The car works for you because you have the keys . My house works for you because you wear the PIN or hold the console .

  A) 閱讀下面的短文,根據(jù)要求完成任務

Where’s the connection?

LATELY, I’ve been feeling that technology is dividing us as much as uniting us . Yes ,it can make the far feel near .But it can also make the near feel far .

I realized this after a taxi ride from Charles de Gaulle Airport (法國戴高樂機場)to my hotel in Paris. The driver and I were together for an hour , but between the two of us ,we had been doing six different things .He was driving ,talking on his cellphone ,and watching a video on a screen in the dashboard (汽車儀表板).I was riding ,working on my laptop ,and playing my iPod . There was one thing we never did :Talk to each other .

I love connectivity ,but I’m finding this age of interruption overwhelming(勢不可擋,巨大的).I’m not alone .A month ago ,I was trying to find a friend in Jerusalem(耶路撒冷). I kept calling his cellphone and getting no answer .I eventually found him at home .“What’s wrong with your cellphone?”I asked . “It was stolen ,”he said, adding that he didn’t replace it because it was stolen ,“Since then ,the first thing I do every morning is to thank the thief and wish him a long life .”

Watch out!QRIO, Sony’s robot ,is a few steps ahead of you.It can dance and kick a football, and it is the world’s first “running”robot.

Until now robots could not run because they needed one foot on the floor at all times to remain stable. That all changed when Sony’s technology allowed QRIO to run.QRIO is a running robot, but it won’t win in a race. The robot’s run is more like a jog. At 23 inches tall and weighing 15 pounds, QRIO can travel 46 feet per minute, which is about 0.5 mph.If QRIO were the average human size, it would run a mile in 40 minutes.(Many humans can run a mile in about 10 minutes.)

And if QRIO falls, it will get right back up.QRIO is programmed to check its position after a fall.It then turns itself face up and stands up again.

QRIO can recognize people’s faces and voices. It has a special built-in camera that takes a picture when meeting people. It examines the pictures and remembers people.

QRIO even expresses feelings through movements, conversations, and the use of its lights.QRIO is a quite friendly robot. If you meet the robot,it will ask you what kinds of things you like and don’t like.QRIO remembers all of the facts.so it can have more conversations with you. The robot already knows tens of thousands of words, and can always learn more.

Don’t get too excited. This high-tech robot won’t be racing to your house any time soon.Sony says it has no immediate plans to sell QRIO.
