[1] Walking is a popular form of exercises. It is an easy activity and offers a good way to improve physical fitness. Walking also gives many of the same benefits as other kinds of exercises.
[2] Regular, brisk walks help a person’s body work better. Walking builds a stronger heart and lungs. The heart pumps blood through the body. It gets more rest between beats. Walking also seems to help protect the heart from heart diseases. The lungs work better because they take in and use oxygen more effectively. Walking can help to lose weight, too. A quick fifteen-minute walk burns as many calories as jogging the same distance in half the time. Walking causes very few injuries. So there is also a lower “dropout” rate among walkers than among runners. People are more likely to continue a walking program. This gives a better chance for success.
[3] Walking offers some mental benefits, too. It seems to make people feel better. Many walkers say they __________________ at night when they take regular walks. Others say they have a better attitude about life.
[4] Walking offers many of the same physical and mental benefits as other forms of exercise, but walking offers some special advantages, too.
★ Almost everyone can walk. There are no special lessons of coaching. To become a serious walker, a person only needs to walk faster, farther and more often.
★ People can walk almost anywhere. There are no special playing fields or courts for walking. Sidewalks, streets, parks, fields and malls are excellent places for walking.
★ People can walk almost anytime. A person doesn’t need a team or a partner for walking. There is no “season” for walking. Most walkers walk in all kinds of weather.
★ Walking doesn’t cost anything. There are no special fees for walking. Good walking shoes and comfortable clothes are the only equipment that a walker needs.
[5] Walking offers a form of exercise within the reach of nearly everyone. With a little time and effort, people can rediscover this valuable form of exercise and improve their fitness.

The western alphabet, which is used in Europe, the Americas, Africa, Australia and New Zealand as well as in other countries, originated in the Middle East. The people who gave the world this alphabet were the Phoneacians, a people who established colonies all over the Mediterranean, including Carthage in Africa and Gades in Spain. In their alphabet, the letters were represented by little pictures which represented sounds. The Phoneacian A was aelph, which means “bull”, and it was made from a little picture of a bull’s head. The letter B was beth which meant “house”, and showed the round-roofed buildings which you can still see today in Syria.
The Phoneacians had contact with another nation of sailors, the Greeks, with whom they fought and traded. The Greeks also started to use the Phoneacian alphabet. They changed the names, so aelph and beth became alpha and beta. The shapes of the letters are the same, but they have been turned sideways. If you know any Greek, you can try turning the letters around again, and see how they look. You will see that the curve on the right of the Greek A becomes the horns of a little bull.
Of course, the first two letters of the alphabet give it its name. Over the years there have been changes. Latin developed an alphabet with some different letters to the Greeks, and other letters have been added since. But really westerners are using the same system of writing which has served them so well for thousands of years.
71. What is the purpose of this text?
A. To share something of the Phoneacian history.
B. To tell the story of the western alphabet.
C. To compare the western alphabet with others.
D. To describe the order of the Greek alphabet.
72. Where did the western alphabet originally come from?
A. Carthage. B. Gades . C. The Mediterranean. D. The Middle East.
73. Which picture, according to the text, represents beth?
A B C D
74. Which change did the Greeks make to the Phoneacian alphabet?
A. They changed the pictures to sounds.
B. They put a curve on the letter A.
C. They changed the shape of the letters.
D. They turned the letters in a different direction.
75. Which of the following shows the development of western alphabet?
① More letters were added to the alphabet.
② Little pictures represented sounds.
③ The letters were turned sideways.
④ The names of the letters were changed.
A. ②→④→③→①
B. ①→③→②→④
C. ③→①→④→②
D. ④→②→①→③

I heard many parents complaining that their teenage children are rebelling. I wish it were so. At your age you ought to be growing away from your parents. You should be learning to stand on your own two feet. But take a good look at the present rebellion. It seems that teenagers are taking the same way of showing that they disagree with their parents. Instead of striking out boldly on their own, most of them are clutching (緊握) at one another's hands for reassurance.
They claim they want to dress as they please. But they all wear the same clothes. They set off in new directions in music. But somehow they all end up huddled (聚在一起) round listening to the same record. Their reason for thinking or acting in thusandsuch a way is that the crowd is doing it. They have come out of their cocoon (蠶繭) into a largercocoon.
It has become harder and harder for a teenager to stand up against the popularity wave and to go his or her own way. Industry has firmly carved out a teenage market. These days every teenager can learn from the advertisements what a teenager should have and be. And many of today's parents have come to award high marks for the popularity of their children. All this adds up to a great barrier for the teenager who wants to find his or her own path.
But the barrier is worth climbing over. The path is worth following. You may want to listen to classical music instead of going to a party. You may want to collect rocks when everyone else is collecting records. You may have some thoughts that you don't care to share at once with your classmates. Well, go to it. Find yourself. Be yourself. Popularity will come—with the people who respect you for who you are. That is the only kind of popularity that really counts.

A.Convincing. B.Instructive.C.Influential. D.Authoritative.

I'm usually fairly skeptical about any research that concludes that people are either happier or unhappier or more or less certain of themselves than they were 50 years ago. While any of these statements might be true, they are practically impossible to prove scientifically. Still, I was struck by a report which concluded that today's children are significantly more anxious than children in the 1950s. In fact, the analysis showed, normal children aged 9 to 17 exhibit a higher level of anxiety today than children who were treated for mental illness 50 years ago.
Why are America's kids so stressed? The report cites two main causes: increasing physical isolation(隔離) brought on by high divorce rates and less involvement in community, among other things and a growing perception that the world is a more dangerous place.
Considering that wecan'tturntheclockback, adults can still do plenty to help the next generation.
At the top of the list is nurturing(培育) a better appreciation of the limits of individualism. No child is an island. Strengthening social ties helps build communities and protect individuals against stress.
To help kids build stronger connections with others, you can pull the plug on TVs and computers. Your family will thank you later. They will have more time for facetoface relationships, and they will get more sleep.
Limit the amount of virtual(虛擬的) violence your children are exposed to. It's not just video games and movies; children see a lot of murder and crime on the local news.
Keep your expectations for your children reasonable. Many highly successful people never attended Harvard or Yale.
Make exercise part of your daily routine. It will help you cope with your own anxieties and provide a good model for your kids. Sometimes anxiety is unavoidable. But it doesn't have to ruin your life.
61. According to the analysis, compared with normal children today, children treated as mentally ill 50 years ago ________.
A. probably suffered less from anxietyB. were considered less individualistic
C. were less isolated physicallyD. were probably less selfcentered
62. What does the author mean by saying “we can't turn the clock back” in the third paragraph?
A. It's impossible to forget the past.
B. The social reality children are facing cannot be forgotten.
C. It's impossible to slow down the pace of change.
D. Lessons learned from the past should not be forgotten.
63. The author thinks that the conclusions of any research about people's state of mind are ________.
A. illogical B. confusingC. surprising D. questionable
64. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
A. To children, anxiety is completely avoidable.
B. TV and computer play an important role in isolating children from the real world.
C. Exercise does not help to lessen children's anxiety.
D. Sometimes local news about crime and murder also affects children a little.
65. The first and most important thing parents should do to help their children is______.
A. to lower their expectations for them
B. to set a good model for them to follow
C. to get them more involved socially
D. to improve them with a safer environment
