“I thirst”

Each day waterrelated diseases killed 3, 900 of the world’s children

Across the world, 1.1 billion people have no access to clean drinking water.More than 2.5 billion people lack basic sanitation.(衛(wèi)生設(shè)備)

The combination proves deadly. Each year, diseases related to inadequate(不適當(dāng)?shù)?water and sanitation kill between 2 and 5 million people and cause an estimated 80 percent of all sicknesses in the developing world.Safe drinking water is a precondition for health and the fight against child death rate, inequality between men and women, and poverty.

  Consider these facts:

●The average distance that women in Africa and Asia walk to collect water is 6 kilometers.

●Only 58 percent of children in subSaharan Africa are drinking safe water, and only 37 percent of children in South Asia have access to even a basic toilet.

●Each year in India alone, 73 million working days are lost to waterborne diseases.

Here are three ways you can help:

  (1)Write Congress

Current(當(dāng)前的)U.S.foreign aid for drinking water and sanitation budgets only one dollar per year per American citizen.Few members of Congress have ever received a letter from voters about clean drinking water abroad.

(2)Sponsor(贊助)a project with a faithbased organization

Many U.S.religious groups already sponsor water and sanitation projects, working with partner organizations abroad.Simply put a single project by a U.S.organization can make safe water a reality for thousands of people.

  (3)Support nonprofit water organizations

Numerous U.S.based nonprofits work skillfully abroad in communityled projects related to drinking water and sanitation.Like the sample of nonprofits noted as follows:some organizations are large, other smallscale, some operate worldwide, others are devoted to certain areas in Africa, Asia, or Latin America.Support them generously.

閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的四個(gè)選項(xiàng)(A、B、C和D)中,選出最佳選項(xiàng)。

The decision of the New York philharmonic to hire Alan Gilbert as its next music director has been the talk of the classical-music world ever since the sudden announcement of his appointment. For the most part, the response has been favorable, to say the least “Hooray! At last!” wrote Anthony Tommasini, a classical-music critic.

One of the reason why the appointment came as such a surprise, however, is that Gilbert is comparatively little known.Even Tommasini, who had advocated Gilbert's appointment in the Times, calls him “an musician with no air of the formidable(令人敬畏的)conductor about him.” As a description of the next music director of an orchestra that has so far been led by musicians like Gustav Mahler and Pierre Boulez, that seems likely to have struck at least some Times readers as faint praise.

For my part, I have no idea whether Gilbert is a great conductor or even a good one.To be sure, he performs an impressive variety of interesting compositions, but it is not necessary for me to visit Avery Fisher Hall, or anywhere else, to hear interesting orchestral music. All I have to do is to go to my CD shelf, or open my computer and download still more recorded music from iTunes.

Devoted concertgoers who reply that recording are no substitute for live performance are missing the point. For the time, attention, and money of the art-loving public, classical instrumentalists(演奏家) must compete not only with opera houses, dance groups , theater companies, and museums, but also with the recorded performances of the great classical musicians of the 20 th century.Their recordings are cheap, available everywhere, and very often much higher in artistic quality than today's choosing. The widespread availability of such recording has thus brought about a crisis in the institution of the traditional classical concert.

One possible response is for classical performers to program attractive new music that is not yet available on records.Gilbert's own interest in new music has been widely noted:Alex Ross , a classical-music critic, has described him as a man who is capable of turning the Philharmonic into “a markedly different, more energetic organization”.But what will be the nature of that difference? Merely, expanding the orchestra's repertoire(曲目)will not be enough. If Gilbert and the Philharmonic are to succeed, they must first change the relationship between America's oldest orchestra and the new audience it hopes to attract.

(1)

We learn from Para 1 that Gilbert's appointment has ________.

[ ]

A.

met with criticism

B.

received applause

C.

raised suspicion

D.

aroused curiosity

(2)

The author believes that the devoted concertgoers ________

[ ]

A.

reject most kinds of recorded performance

B.

fail to recognize the variety of live performance

C.

overestimate(高估)the variety of live performance

D.

ignore the expense of live performance

(3)

According to the text, which of the following is true of recordings?

[ ]

A.

They are often inferior to live concerts in quality

B.

They are easily accessible to the general public

C.

They help improve the quality of music

D.

They have only covered masterpieces

(4)

Regarding Gilbert's role in revitalizing( 振興) the Philharmonic, the author feels ________

[ ]

A.

enthusiastic

B.

confident

C.

puzzled

D.

doubtful

第一節(jié):閱讀下列短文, 從每題所給的四個(gè)選項(xiàng) (A、B、C和D) 中, 選出最佳選項(xiàng)。

Being interested in a theme park since the time that I was a child, I have learned a thing or two over the years about packing for a day of fun. A trip to a theme park is always a adventure, but if you’re not prepared, your day of fun could easily turn into a tiny little nightmare(噩夢(mèng)). It is important to pack long sleeved(帶袖的) shirts or jackets for all members of your family. I is also a good idea to pack an extra pair of socks for each member of the family, especially the children, as those wonderful water rides can be fun, but wet socks that won’t dry aren’t so much fun.

You don’t want to pack too much food, as you will probably want to experience at least some of the food offered at the theme park of your choice(that’s half of the fun), but it’s always a good idea to bring some energy increasing snacks, such as fruit, trail mix, etc. This can mean the difference between spending a lot of money on snacks or a little money on one or two good meals.

Theme parks, while fun and exciting, can wear a person out, especially a child, so it’s important to keep hydrated(含水的). I would suggest packing one bottle of water per person, and possibly a couple of cans of soda or bottles of juice as well.

It’s a good idea to have at least two cell phones or even a set of “walkie-talkies” in the event that your family gets, separated in the park. It’s a good idea to give one of these things to the children and one to the parents and make sure that each of them knows how to use it. This could be the difference between trouble and a happy ending,

1.You should get well prepared before going to a theme park__________.

  A. because the trip always costs much money

B.because there are always too many people in a theme park.

C. so as not to suffer from bad dreams when going back

D.so as to cut down your trip expenses and have more fun

2.From the passage, we can know_______________.

A.the author was fond of visiting theme parks when he was a child

B.wearing wet socks in a theme park will bring children much fun

C.it is terrible to have a taste of the food offered in a theme park.

D. we’d better bring enough food, clothing and water when going to a theme park

3.What does th underlined part”walkie-talkies” in the last paragraph probably refer to?

  A. A kind of transportation tool           B.A kind of musical instrument

C.A kind of CDplayer                  D.A kind of phone

4.How many types of things does the author advise us to pack for day trips to a theme park?

Sometimes teens need to have some time away from their families. They may want to move out of the
family home for a while. Many parents will say no to this demand. But experts say it might be a good idea
to let your teens live with a friend or relative.
"It was the break I need at the time," said Richant Lerner. He is talking about the time he spent living
with grandmother when he was 15.
"It allowed me to be a different person than I was with my parents," Lerner said. He now heads the
Institute (學(xué)會(huì))for Children, Youth and Families at Michigan State University. Experts say teens living away
from their families can test new ways of thinking and getting along with people. They may see new solutions
to problems.
This is different from running away, the experts stress (強(qiáng)調(diào)). Runaways are often feeing serious
problems.
Some teens who want some time away from family attend a structured summer program. Others live for
a while with a relative or with the family of a friend. If there is a conflict (沖突) at home, having a teen live
elsewhere can benefit other family members. It gives everyone space to develop better relationships.
Joseph Kett teaches history at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. He says living at home until the
