An old saying “the early bird will catch worms”reminds us that if people want to be successful and outstanding ，they must plan ahead of time and make their efforts to overcome all the possible difficulties。
For example，the Chinese athletes’ excellent performance in 2010 Olympic winter games in Vancouver is definitely the result of their early planning and hard training 。if they don’t set the aim and word work，even though they have the best talents ，they can’t compete with others and get more medals。
Another case in point is my learning experience。I was good at English ，but I couldn’t pass the exam ，for I wasn’t prepared well before the examination。I had many things to solve at that time。As I met the complex things ，I was at a loss。The reason was that I had no plan and involved in many things and didn’t study more hard，so I failed。
In short ，the saying shows us the important of planning ，working hard and constantly trying。

The worst example of man’s waste is the waste of time . Many people tend to spend their time on worthless things , such as wandering about in the street , gossiping（閑聊） in the office , sleeping too much during the day .
It is time to call for an end to the waste . On one hand , we must save on natural resources and make full use of them . On the other hand , we must value time .

A Thirsty World
Three-fourths of the earth’s surface is covered by water, some of which is frozen and most of which is salty. In fact, less than one percent left for all the living things.
Now fresh water is becoming scare, but more and more is needed because of the increasing number of people. Some industries also use amounts of fresh water in the production of things such as steel, paper, and rubber. These factories have polluted water flow into rivers without making it clean. What’s more, people in the city have much dirtied water piped into ditches after cooking every day.
Scientists estimate that the need for fresh water will have doubled by the year 2003. This means that we must find new ways of saving it or producing it. Some nations have worked on the problem and are already sharing their information with others. They are trying to keep their rivers from being polluted. Deep wells are also being dug, and rainwater is being collected in huge artificial lakes. In one way or another, they hope to provide enough water to satisfy the needs of their people. For example, one important wayof producing water is to distill(用蒸餾法提取) it from sea water. After the salt has been removed, sea water can be used not only for drinking but also for industry and irrigation. However, the equipment for distillation process is very expensive. Distilled water might be as dear as gold if pollution goes on.

An earthquake happened in Bam（伊朗的巴姆市） on December 26, 2003. About 30,000 people were killed and more were injured. Many of those killed by the earthquake died only because of poor building methods and a lack of proper regulation.
In Iran, as in many developing countries, earthquake that ought to be survivable（不致命的）often bring human disaster because buildings collapse (倒塌) on top of people. Two days before Christmas, California was struck by an earthquake similar in magnitude (強度) to the one that hit Iran Saturday, but only three people died, thanks largely to safer construction methods. A quake measuring 8.0 caused just 500 injuries and no deaths in Japan in September 2003.
Bam, however, was a disaster waiting to happen. Efforts to bring industrial development to what was a backward agricultural area caused a population boom (激增)and a shortage of housing, which local builders tried to meet with cheap homes, or by adding extra floors to existing houses. Many buildings collapse [even] without earthquakes, because of the poor construction.

It was the end of my first day as waitress in a busy New York restaurant. My cap had gone away, and my feet hurt. The loaded plates I carried seemed to be heavier and heavier. Tired and discouraged. Then the father smiled at me as he handed me my tip. “Well done”, he said, “you’re looking after us really well.” Suddenly my tiredness disappeared. I smiled back, and later, when the manager asked me how I’d like my first day. I said, “Fine!” Those few words of praise had changed everything. Praise is like sunshine to the human spirit; no flower can grow without it. And yet, most of us are only too ready to apply to others the cold wind of criticism; we are unwilling to give our fellows the warm sunshine of praise. Why when one word of praise can bring such benefit?
In fact, to give praise costs the giver nothing but a moment’s thought and a moment’s effort but will reward both the giver and the recipient with a happy day. Let’s learn to give credit (贊揚) to people around us.
