How to Avoid Weight Gain Over Holidays
Do you love the holidays, but hate the pounds that follow? You are not alone. Holidays are times for feasting and celebrating. Many people are worried about their weight. 【小題1】 Whether you are celebrating at the office party or sitting down for the traditional family dinner, regard eating as a time for tasting a variety of foods. The idea is to enjoy the holidays but not to eat too much. You don’t have to turn away from the foods that you enjoy.
Here are some tips for preventing weight gain and maintaining physical fitness:
Don’t skip meals.
Before you leave home, have a small, low-fat meal or snack. 【小題2】
Control portions.
Use a small plate (about 10 inches) and put aside the large ones that may encourage you to “l(fā)oad up.” 【小題3】Once you have your “tasting” serving, move away from the dining table. Doing so will make it less tempting (吸引人的) to be eating constantly as your appetite is inspired by the sight of food.
Begin with soup and fruit or vegetables.
Fill up beforehand with water-based soup and raw fruit or vegetables. Or drink a large glass of water before you eat to help you feel full.
Stick to physical activity.
_【小題4】A 20-minute walk after a meal can help burn off additional calories.
_【小題5】_ Dishes that look oily or creamy may have a large amount of fat. Choose lean meats. Fill your plate with salad and green vegetables. Use lemon juice instead of dressing or butter.
A.This may help to avoid getting too excited before delicious food. |
B.You had better turn your attention away from delicious foods. |
C.With proper planning, though, it is possible to keep normal weight during the holidays. |
D.You should be most comfortable eating an amount of food about the size of your fist. |

Many people are worried about their weight.講述人們害怕假期中會(huì)長(zhǎng)胖,空后面內(nèi)容卻是You don’t have to turn away from the foods that you enjoy讓人們不要懼怕美味盛宴,前后內(nèi)容是轉(zhuǎn)折關(guān)系,而縱觀選項(xiàng)C選項(xiàng)內(nèi)容恰好能起到承上啟下的作用,由此判斷答案選C。
【小題2】A。本條建議是讓人們?cè)陔x開(kāi)家去參加宴會(huì)前先吃點(diǎn)東西,從情理可以推測(cè)這樣當(dāng)人們見(jiàn)到美味的時(shí)候就不會(huì)因?yàn)轲I而過(guò)于激動(dòng)以至于大吃特吃了,而A選項(xiàng)內(nèi)容恰好表達(dá)了此意,this指代前面的一條建議,故答案選A。
【小題3】D。本段內(nèi)容是建議人們要使用小盤(pán)子來(lái)裝食物,這樣會(huì)控制食物的量,而D選項(xiàng)中的the size of your fist 提示了這句話也是關(guān)于食物量的問(wèn)題,內(nèi)容符合語(yǔ)境,故答案選D。

It often seems that people have a hard time in speaking a seemingly familiar name. Did you ever have someone's name on the tip of your tongue and yet you were not able to recall it? When this happened, what did you do? Next time this happens again, what should you do?
You should not try to recall it. Instead, just do something else for a couple of minutes and then the name may come into your head. Why? The name is just there, since you have met this person and learned his name. It, waiting there, only has to be dug out. The initial(最初的) effort to recall prepares the mind for operation, but it is the subconscious (下意識(shí)的) activities that go to work to dig up a dim(模糊的)memory. Forcing yourself to recall almost never helps because it doesn't loosen your memory; it only tightens it.
That’s why students find the preparatory method greatly helpful in examinations. They read over the questions before trying to answer any of them. Then they answer first the ones of which they are most confident. At the same time, deeper mental activities in the subconscious mind are taking place; work is being done on the more difficult questions. By the time the easier questions are answered, answers to the more difficult ones will usually begin to come into consciousness. It is often just a question of waiting for recall to come to the memory.
You see, forcing ourselves to think hard to recall something usually doesn’t help. Chances are that the harder we think, the more difficulty we face in thinking of what we want to. Offering our mind time to work is what we are expected to do.

Old Wives' Tales Proven Untrue
We all grew up with sayings that were intended to frighten us into being good or convince us to eat better.Looking back, some of these childhood proverbs don’t even make much sense.(Ever hear the claim that swallowed gum stays in your stomach for seven years? Uh-huh, sure.)However, there are quite a few out there that people still believe in.That's why we decided to investigate some common old wives' tales to see how they hold up under scientific scrutiny. From the moon's affect on crimes to the true causes of colds, this list is sure to surprise even the most enlightened among you.
【小題1】
False: Countless kids were scared into thinking that if they went back in the water less than 60 minutes after eating, they would suddenly cramp up (the muscles get suddenly tightened) and drown. But according to MayoClinic.com, it's perfectly safe to swim after you eat a light meal or snack. The site does recommend taking a short break after eating a big meal, however, not because of cramping, but due to extreme lack of energy. As is known to us all, after eating, more of our blood goes to help the digestive system.
【小題2】
Partially True: This saying has been around since before the discovery of an apple's vital nutrients: Vitamin C and polyphenols.Regardless, the core of the matter is that while this fruit will help keep you well, it's not always enough to keep you out of the medical danger zone; When you're ill, your body requires nutrients from all the different types of food in a well-balanced diet, including fruits, vegetables, yogurt, protein and, of course, chicken soup.Only one kind of specific fruit or food can not solve all the problems.
【小題3】
False: According to the National Weather Service, lightning can strike the same place numerous times, especially if it's a tall, pointed and isolated object. For example, the EmPire State Building, a skyscraper on Fifth Avenue, New York City, USA, which was for long the tallest building in the world, 'is hit an average of 25 times a year. That is the reason why it was once used as a lightning laboratory. Lightning often strikes more than three miles from the thunderstorm and laughs at two inches of rubber!
【小題4】
False: Neither wet nor dry hair significantly increases your chances of getting sick.WebM D.com says colds are solely caused when viruses are passed from one person to another, so you should be more concerned with how often you wash your hands, not your hair. A proper way to keep healthy is to develop good personal habits of life.Prevention is always the best cure, better than any drug and treatment.
【小題5】
False: Many interesting things are thought to increase during a full moon emergency room visits, accidents, ability to have babies, werewolves.Almost all these phenomena are attributed to the Lunar Effect, which tries to link unusual, unbelievable, or unacceptable behavior and the phases of the moon. However, according to myth-buster and syndicated columnist, Cecil Adams, there is no truth at all behind the theory.
