When my first wartime Christmas came, I was in basic training in New Jersey and not sure if I would make it home for the holiday. Only on the afternoon of December 23 was the list of men who would have the three-day holiday posted. I was one of the lucky soldiers. It was Christmas Eve when I arrived home, and a little snow had fallen. Mother opened the front door. I could see beyond her, into the corner of the living room where the tree had always stood. There were lights, colors, and ornaments (飾品) shining against the green of a pine.
"Where did it come from?" I asked.
"I asked the Gates boy to cut it," my mother said. "I wouldn't have had one just for myself, but when in great need... such a rush! He just brought it in this afternoon."
The pine reached to the proper height, almost to the ceiling, and the Tree Top Crystal(水晶)Star was in its place. A few green branches reached out a little awkwardly(難看)at the side, I thought, and there was a bit of bare trunk showing in the middle. But the tree filled the room with warm light and the whole house with the pleasant smell of Christmas.
"It's not like the one you used to find," my mother went on. "Yours were always in good shape. I suppose the Gates boy didn't know where to look for a better one. But I couldn't be fussy(挑剔的)."
"Don't worry," I told her. "It's perfect."
It wasn't, of course, but at the moment I realized something for the first time: All Christmas trees are perfect.

Sometimes I really doubt whether there is love between my parents. Every day they are busy trying to   36  in order to pay the high school cost for my brother and me. Sending flowers to each other on Lovers’ Day is even more out of   39 .

I was very worried because I thought I had   44  her. I was very regretful and I didn’t know what I should do. But at last I heard my mother say the following words:
“Susan,” she said   45 , “Look at this thread. Sometimes it   46 , but most of it disappears in the quilt. The thread really makes the quilt strong and long-lasting. If life is a quilt, then love should be a thread. It can   47    be seen anywhere or anytime, but it’s really there. Love is   48 .”

“Dad, how are you feeling now?” I asked him one day.
“Susan ,” he said kindly. “To tell you the truth, I just like   52  with your mom.”   53 his eyes, I know he loves my mother deeply.
Once I thought love meant flowers, gifts and   54 . But from this experience, I understand that love is just   55  in the quilt of our life. Love is inside, making life strong and warm.

“Little lies” sometimes come to easily to us that we don’t even consider them to be lies. Read about these lies of everyday life:
1.  Lying about your age or your kid’s age to get a cheaper ticket.
2.  Telling the host of a dinner party that the terrible food he prepared is wonderful.
3.  Lying to your aunt about how much you love the gift she gave you---the one that you really hate.
4.  Telling a friend with a terrible haircut that she looks great.
5.  Lying to a friend about how much you want to see her again when you really don’t
6.Telling the salesperson who calls when you’re watching TV that you’re very busy.
Are these serious lies? Probably not, but if you would lie about your age to a stranger, what’s going to stop you from lying about something more serious later? If we tell a lie or act dishonestly and get what we want, that might make us feel good today. But what about tomorrow? The future results of our lies are uncertain.
Still, no one is saying that everyone can or should be completely honest all the time. More people lie, often for a good reason. Lies are told all the time and are part of our everyday social life. Many times people lie to protect the feelings of other people, and there’s nothing wrong with that. Honesty is usually the best policy, but like any other policy, you have to make exceptions.
小題1:The author tries to persuade the readers to accept his argument by___________.
A.making suggestions.B.explaining reasons and results.
C.providing examples and facts.D.discussing questions.
小題2:The author’s attitude towards little lies is that_________.
A.he feels very fond of them.B.he feels they are necessary sometimes.
C.he feels strongly against telling little lies.D.he feels ashamed of telling little lies.
小題3:According to the text, which of the following is TRUE?
A.Some people are born liars.B.People often lie to avoid hurting others.
C.Some people can be honest all the time. D.Little lies are not serious things.

Dear John,
I'm sorry you didn't get the part you tried out for in that play. I know how much you wanted to be in the play. Now you feel that maybe acting isn't the right future for you. I think you're wrong. You're a good actor. Do you remember when you played Caesar in your summer theatre group's play? You were excellent . People clapped(鼓掌)every time you walked on stage(舞臺(tái)). Even the other actors loved you.
All actors have to get used to being turned down for a job. It's part of an actor's life. Even famouse actors don't get every part they want. I think you should give acting another chance. Sean and Danielle were leaving the music store when they heard the crash. "What do you suppose that was?" asked Sean.
"I don't know for sure," said Danielle, "but it sure sounded bad. It's right over there. Let's go and look."
Sean and Danielle knew they would see an accident. But they didn't know what to expect. There in the middle of the street was a bicycle that had been hit by a car. The bicycle rider was sitting in the street, shaking his head.
"Look at that," said Sean, "he's not even wearing a helmet. He is one lucky guy".
"No kidding," Danielle replied. "Look at the driver of the car. She's just as lucky. She's not wearing a seat belt.
Sean and Danielle are right. The bicycle rider is very lucky, he was not hurt. Riding a bicycle is a lot of fun, but it can also be very dangerous. You have to pay attention all the time to what you're doing. You also have to follow safety rules.
When you ride a bicycle, remember that you share the road with cars and trucks. These vehicles are a lot bigger than you are. So, always wear a helmet when riding your bicycle. Always means "every time" even if you are just riding around the block.
Follow the same rules as car and truck drivers. Bicycle riders also have some special rules. Here are some special rules you should follow:
● Do not ride your bicycle on the sidewalk. By not riding on the sidewalk, you won't run into a pedestrian.
● Ride on bike paths or trails when they are available.
● Always ride in the same direction as traffic.
● Always ride on the right-hand side of the road.
● When you ride with a friend, do not ride next to each other. Ride in single field, one behind the other.
● Obey all traffic signals and signs. Stop at all stop signs.
● Walk your bicycle across busy crossings.
● Be sure to use hand signals when you turn and stop.
Follow these safety rules when riding a bicycle at night.
● Have a headlight that works.
● Have these reflectors on your bicycle: yellow or white in front, and red ones on the pedals and back.
● Wear light-colored clothing so drivers can see you.
You should always keep your bicycle in good working order. Make sure the brakes work properly and that your tires have enough air. If you find anything wrong with your bike, fix it or have it fixed before you ride it again.

A.Because the bicycle and the car were lost.
B.Because the rider didn’t wear his helmet.
C.Because they both were not badly hurt.
D.Because the driver didn’t wear the seat belt.
小題4: From the passage, we learn that _________.

I often write about the bad state of television these days, but recently my mom told me about a story she saw on 60 Minutes that was inspiring, educational, and entertaining for the whole family. I went to the show’s website to see for myself. My mom was right. At a time when even Barbara Walters says she’s really bored with celebrities interviews, this one will not disappoint.
It’s the story of Derek Paravicini, a 30-year-old who was born three months early, physically disabled (he can’t button his own shirt), blind, and severely autistic(自閉的).
Yet, through total luck and coincidence, his family discovered that Derek had a remarkable musical talent when he was three.
Derek can hear any musical composition one time and play it perfectly on the piano.
That’s right. He only has to hear it once.
Even more unbelievable, his brain, like a computer, can keep many songs that he can immediately repeat when asked. But his talent isn’t limited to just learning things by heart. Derek is a true musical genius and artist who plays beautifully in a wide range of styles and can make his own music.
With his talent, Derek has raised millions of dollars putting on charity concerts. He also donates his time to senior centers where he acts as a human jukebox (自動(dòng)唱機(jī)) machine, taking requests from senior citizens who haven’t heard their favorite songs for decades.
As it turns out, Derek loves people and his extraordinary talent has been the key to unlocking his personality and social development.
If you want to inspire your family, pop some popcorn and sit everyone down to watch this excellent piece of journalism. If your kids are like mine, it will cause a great family discussion about the definition of “disability” and the extraordinary ability of the human brain and spirit. It may even give you the perfect answer the next time your child says he or she “can’t” do something. Now that’s priceless.
Who says there’s nothing good on TV?

A.By buying them a jukebox machine.
B.By building senior centers for them.

A.a(chǎn)ttract the whole family to watch TV together
B.cause family members to help the disabled
C.help kids understand the ability of their brains
D.encourage kids to accept challenges in life
小題4:The author’s purpose in writing this passage is to     .
