You may think that English dictionaries have been used for many, many centuries. The spelling of English has always been a problem. 1. Then people could spell words in different ways which you might find interesting. But it made reading English much more difficult. So dictionaries were invented to encourage everybody to spell the same. In fact, an English dictionary like the kind you use today wasn’t made until the time of the late Qing Dynasty. 2. They are Samuel Johnson, Noah Webster, and James Murray. These men spent nearly all of their lives trying to collect words for their dictionaries. For them, it was not only a job; it was a wonderful journey of discovery. The largest dictionary in the world is the Oxford English Dictionary, or OED for short.

3. At the age of fourteen, he left his village school in Scotland and taught himself while working in a bank. Later he became a great teacher. After Oxford gave him the job, Murray had a small house built in the garden behind his house to do his work. Part of it was one meter underground. 4. He had to wear a heavy coat and put his feet in a box to keep warm. Every morning, Murray got out of bed at five o’clock and worked several hours before breakfast. 5. Murray hoped to finish the new dictionary in ten years. But after five years, he was still adding words for the letter A! Forty-four years later, in 1928, other editors finished the dictionary.

World Book Day is a celebration of all things wonderful about books for all ages, with author events, school fancy-dress parades and a £1 book token(購書券)given to all school children under 18. It is a yearly event on 23rd April, organized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization ( UNESCO ) to promote reading.

In the United Kingdom, the day is recognized on the first Thursday in March. On 3rd March 2016 children of all ages in the UK will come together to appreciate reading. Sometimes, reading a modern novel can be tough ( Booker Prize winner The Luminaries runs to 832 pages! ), especially if reading is not your strong suit. In fact, one in six people in the UK never pick up a book because they’ve experienced difficulties or are out of the habit of reading for pleasure.

The Galaxy Quick Reads series are designed to introduce reluctant readers to bestselling short funny novels, which bring the joy of reading without demanding hours of concentrated time. They cover a range of subjects, from romance to comedy.

Jojo Moyes’s Paris For One is a romantic adventure in which 26-year-old Nell books a weekend away to Paris with her lazy, neglectful boyfriend. When he fails to turn up, she is alone in the city. That is, until she meets Fabien, who shows her the charms of the French capital -- in more ways than one.

Adele Geras’s moving story Out In The Dark was set in World War I, in which young Rob came back from the battlefields. Determined to find the officer’s widow to return the photo of her and their daughter that the captain kept with him, he traveled several thousand miles but never gave up.

Dead Man Talking is a fantastic tale of Pat, who had a terrible fight with his best friend, Joe, ten years ago -- but now hears that Joe is dead, and he must attend his funeral. But Joe is not going quietly that very night -- he’s lying in his coffin being very chatty indeed.

1.What is the main aim of the World Book Day?

A. To promote book selling. B. To encourage reading.

C. To win authors fame. D. To perfect education.

2.If you lack confidence in your reading skills, you will probably avoid reading _____.

C. A horror story. D. A moving story.

4.According to the passage, which of the following statements is TURE ?

A. The Luminaries tells a story of a Booker Prize winner.

C. Out In The Dark is a story during World WarⅡ.

Best friends may be priceless but the cost of keeping the relationship alive is £23,870.

According to a study, a BFF (best friends forever) does not come cheap with devoted friends spending £4,679 on birthday presents alone over a lifetime. And while it costs nothing to be a shoulder to cry on, big-hearted Britons go the extra mile and spend £168 on pick-me-ups(提神物品) to get their mate through a rocky patch (艱難時刻)like the breakup of a relationship.

There’s a further £242 spent on presents to show how much they mean from gifts bought on holiday to treats for no reason. And distance does not break up a close friendship as BFFs spend a whopping(巨大的) £18,000 on travel to see each other despite being miles apart because of university, jobs and marriage.

The study by cashback site TopCashBack found on average BEFs who marry can expect £431 spent on them and a further £283 on gifts when they have children. And they can rely on their pals to help out when they move houses as they will obtain £127 worth of housewarming presents and takeaways(a kind of food).

The survey based on a friendship lasting 40 years found more than eight in ten adults with a BFF felt their friendships were worth every penny.

TopCashback spokesperson Natasha Smith said: “Those friendships which stand the test of time are often the most important in our lives. However, they come at a cost. From train tickets once a month to flights and a new dress for a wedding on the Italian coast, the price paid for having a best mate can soon add up. But when we asked people to compare their friendship with the financial investment(投資), only 14% thought their friendship was equal to their investment with the vast majority thinking it was worth more."

1. What does the underlined word in Paragraph 2 mean?

A. generous B. ambitious

C. troublesome D. energetic

2.To keep the relationship, where do BEFs spend the most money?

A. Buying birthday presents.

B. Cheering up a friend in low spirits.

C. Paying for holiday gifts and other treats.

D. Going a particular distance to visit friends.

3.What is Natasha’s understanding of BEF friendship?

A. It’s costly and unaffordable.

B. It’s expensive but worthwhile.

C. It’s rewarding but hard to keep.

D. It’s changeable but worth possessing.

4. How is the passage developed?

A. By listing figures.

B. By giving examples.

C. By analying causes.

D. By making comparisons.
