Christmas Eve means a warm get-together with friends, a candlelight dinner, or perhaps a celebration at a pub for students. But, for Cai Yingjie, the night has a different meaning: helping beggars(乞丐)and the homeless(people without homes).
Cai, who is a student in journalism at Tsinghua, could be found at Beijing’s Wudaokou Light Railway Station that special evening. When she saw an old beggar, she took the cold, rough hands of the woman with her warm, clean hands, and gave the woman some warm bread and helped her put on a pair of new gloves.
The woman was surprised for a few seconds, then burst into tears, saying “for the first time I feel respected”.
Cai said, “A beggar’s life is very hard. That’s why I want to help them.”
Cai was one of 14 Tsinghua students spending Christmas Eve among the poor. They walked in the cold wind along the streets from 4 to 7 pm on Friday, visiting 15 beggars in Beijing’s Haidian District.
They brought bread and gloves with them, and stopped to greet beggars and offer them some of the warm food. Each beggar greeted them with a look of surprise.
“I know the activity can’t help much, but it’s meant to show our respect and care for beggars and the homeless who have been neglected for so long,” said Sun, head of the group. “And Christmas is a good time for that.”

In today’s world, almost everyone knows that air pollution and water pollution are harmful to people’s health. However, not all know that noise is also a kind of pollution, and that is harmful to human, too.
People who work and live under noisy conditions usually become deaf(耳聾的). Today, however, scientists believe that 10% of workers in Britain are deafened by the noise where they work. Many of the workers who print newspapers and books, and who weave cloth become deaf. Quite a few people living near airports also become deaf. Recently it was discovered that many teenagers in America could hear no better than 65-year-old people, for these young people like to listen to “pop” music and most of “pop” music is a kind of noise. Besides, noise produced by jet plane or machines will make people’s life difficult and unpleasant, or even make people ill or even drive them mad. It is said that a continuous noise of over 85 decibels(分貝) can cause deafness.

This recently-released documentary(紀(jì)錄片)had some fantastic footage(鏡頭) in it, and a very personal look at many of the astronauts who went to the moon. Overall, that is a very exclusive(獨(dú)特的) club; only about a dozen men ever did it in the history of the world and just eight or nine ever stepped foot on it. Most of them are still alive and they discuss their adventures, insights and personal feelings here.
One gets the feeling that the rest of us will never know exactly how beautiful the moon is except to take the astronauts’s words about it, because even the pictures on this DVD can’t convey that.
Since this documentary is about 100 minutes long, you get a lot of information. You also get reminded how close two of the three men who went up on that historic first walk on the moon almost didn’t get home alive.
An absence in this documentary is the most famous astronaut of them all: Neil Armstrong, the first man to step foot on the moon! Apparently, he did not want to be part of this film. One of the astronauts mentions something briefly about Armstrong being somewhat of a “recluse(隱居者)” now and it “being understandable with what he’s gone through”. From what I’ve read, a lot of people have tried to make money off him in shady ways and so now he’s withdrawn(退出) from the public spotlight.
This film, a legacy to the Apollo program and the brave men who ran it, should be in every schoolroom. It would make history more interesting to students.
小題1:What can we know from the passage?
A.One of the astronauts talks about how beautiful the moon is.
B.Two of the three men who went to the moon lost their lives.
C.The documentary would make more students interested in history.
D.The astronauts talk about their adventures, insights and excitement.
小題2:How many astronauts first flew to the moon?
A.1B.2C.3.D.4
小題3:Why was Armstrong absent from the film?
A.Because he didn’t like to show in public.
B.Because he has been tired of astronaut’s life.
C.Because someone wanted to make money off him.
D.Because he thought what he did was nothing to mention.
小題4:What made Armstrong famous around the world?
A.That he came back safely to the earth alive.
B.That he became an astronaut.
C.That he first stepped on the moon.
D.That he walked on the moon for 100 minutes.

Surgeons in Spain have successfully carried out the world’s first organ transplant using new stem cell technology. Some people are calling it the greatest medical breakthrough so far this century.
But what are stem cells? As we know, most cells in our bodies are designed to serve specific purposes – for example, a liver cell develops to work in the liver and cannot become a heart cell. But stem cells are different. They are very young, and in the laboratory scientists can grow them into different types of cell.
Claudia Castillo needed a new windpipe after getting a serious disease. Scientists from the University of Bristol in the UK took a donor windpipe, or trachea, from someone who had recently died. They used strong chemicals to remove the donor’s cells, leaving a tissue scaffold(組織支架). This was refilled with cells from Ms Castillo’s windpipe, and stem cells from her bone. After four days the cells had grown sufficiently for the windpipe to be transplanted into Ms Castillo.
Currently, transplant patients have to take drugs for the rest of their lives to prevent their bodies rejecting the new organs. These drugs can have bad side-effects, and do not always prevent rejection. But by using Ms Castillo’s own cells, doctors were able to trick her body into thinking the new windpipe was her own organ. Five months on, Claudia Castillo is in perfect health.
This ground-breaking procedure could be used in other transplant operations in the future. Scientists also believe stem cells might be used to treat Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, heart disease, stroke, arthritis, diabetes, burns and so on.
However, stem cell research is extremely controversial. The most effective stem cells do not come from adults but from embryos created in laboratories and which are just a few days old. Many people have religious or ethical objections to growing embryos, even if they can be used to cure diseases.
小題1:This transplant is considered the greatest medical breakthrough because _________.

小題2:Stem cells are different from the other ceils in the way that __________.
A.they are grown in the lab only
B.they can grow into different types of cell
C.they are designed for a specific purpose
D.they can work in the liver not in the heart
小題3:What is the main idea of the third paragraph?
A.How Claudia survived in the operation
B.How to remove the cells from the donor’s organ
C.Why stem cells are needed in the transplant
D.How the windpipe is transplanted
小題4:Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.Human bodies always reject transplanted organs even with their own cells
B.The donor’s cells had to be removed because they were unhealthy
C.The transplanted organ was refilled with the stem cells only
D.Claudia will not have to take drugs to prevent rejection.
小題5:Which word can best describe the scientists’ attitude towards the stem cell technology?
A.controversialB.confident

When people talk of a virus these days, chances are that they are talking about computer virus that have the power wipe out all the valuable work people may have stored in their computers. Imagine, the virus has the power to make military systems, giant banks, airports, hospitals and traffic system come to stop!
What does a computer virus do? It targets electronic objects that are programmed. The virus spreads through connections between these electronic objects. For virus spreading experts, e-mail is a favorite method of sending their destructive (破壞性的) weapon.
But scientists warn that this is not the worst that can happen. There is more. People are also connected through phones. The next virus may actually target mobile phones, especially those that are programmed to do many tasks apart from just communicating. It would then be easy for a virus to infect those programs and create major disorder.
For example, these virus may have the power to record your phone conversations and make others hear them. They create problems with your electronic money accounts, or they could create a mountain of telephone bills for calls you never made. And that would be a disaster. A report on this was published in the New Scientist recently.
One way out would be to have simpler phones with not so many different functions. This would mean there would mean there would be fewer programs for the virus to attack. But mobile phone producers are in a fix. People on longer want an electronic item to perform just one task. They want more and more functions added. That would mean more software programs to make the mobile phone perform all those functions. And that means the possibility of more viruses.
小題1:It can be inferred from the passage that ______.
A.computer viruses are not so as destructive as mobile phone viruses
B.people should be careful when receiving e-mails
C.people find it difficult to use electronic equipment correctly
D.having electronic money accounts brings people a lot of convenience
小題2:Which of the following shows that your mobile phone is infected with a virus?
A.You can’t hear the person who answers the phone clearly
B.You can’t send e-mails with your mobile phone
C.your phone bill increases for unknown reasons
D.You can hear other people’s phone conversations
小題3:What does the underlined sentence in the last paragraph mean?
A.Mobile phone producers have made no progress.
B.Mobile phone producers are proud of their products.
C.Mobile phone producers are faced with a difficult situation.
D.Mobile phone producers refused to fight against virus.
小題4:For whom is the passage written?
A.Government officialsB.Virus spreading experts

Leadership is the art of getting someone to do something you want done because he wants to do it. People naturally want to follow a good leader. After meeting with an effective leader it is not unusual to feel uplifted(情緒高漲), inspired, and motivated to work towards a common goal.
An effective leader makes others feel good about themselves, as well as the work they are doing. The leader has a vision(幻想)of what he or she wants to achieve, and can communicate that vision to others in a way that makes people want to be part of it. One thing a good leader typically does is to communicate the big picture, so that each employee can see how the particular role he or she plays makes a contribution to the final result.
Good leaders are positive and optimistic when they speak about the future. Their enthusiasm wins them plenty of supporters who help make their vision a reality.
Good leaders also understand that different people are motivated by different things. For employees motivated by a need for achievement, a leader explains how the task offers an opportunity to take on a challenge with an achievable goal. And employees are motivated by hearing how they will be part of a team of people working together.
Good leaders will introduce employees by name first, rather than job titles. They refer to employees as team members, companions, or colleagues, never as “servants”. Words have power, including the power to make people feel whether or not they are important to the success of an organization.
Good leaders believe that every team member matters and set up environments that make everyone feel important. It is no wonder they can attract the support they need to help them achieve their goals.

小題3:What should a good leader do for an employee who wants to succeed at work?
A.To promote the employee to a leadership role.
B.To draw a beautiful picture of the employee’s future.
C.To encourage the employee to meet the challenges of his work.
D.To let the staff know the important role the employee plays.
小題4:We can infer from the passage that_________.
A.a(chǎn) good leader is always good at creating comfortable working conditions

The southwest of Australia has been named as one of 25”hot spots” for future species extinction(滅絕)because of global warming.A new study says global warming will become a top cause of extinction across the world, with thousands of species of plantsand animals likely to be wiped out in the coming decades.
According to the study, global warming ranks among the most serious threats to the planet’s biodiversity and, under some conditions, may be more than that due to deforestation. This study provides even stronger scientific evidence that global warming will result in catastrophic(災(zāi)難性的)species losses across the planet.Last month,a UN study said humans were responsible for the worst extinction and urged extra efforts to reach a UN target of slowing the rate of losses by 2010.
Scientists disagree about how far global warming is to blame compared with other human threats such as deforestation, pollution and the introduction of some species to new habitats. But the new study looks at the 25 “hot spots”—?areas? that contain a big concentration of plants and animals—and predicts that 11.6 percent of all species, with a range from 1 to 43 percent, could be driven to extinction if levels of heat trapping gases in the atmosphere were to keep rising in the next 100 years.
The range would mean the loss of thousands of species. The study gave a wide range because of uncertainties, for instance, about the ability of animals or plants to move towards the poles if the climate warmed. Rare plants, tortoises or birds found only on the southern tip of Africa cannot move south because the nearest land is thousands of miles away in Antarctica.
小題1:According to the passage, which of the following about Australia is TRUE?

A.a(chǎn)re rich in plants and animals
B.a(chǎn)re lacking in natural resources
C.lost most of their plants in 2010
D.will be much hotter than the rest of the world
小題3:We can infer if the climate warms, the animals in Australia will most probably move to the ______ .
A.northB.eastC.westD.south
小題4:What would be the best title for the passage?
A.Australia Named as Extinction”Hot Spot”
B.Global Warming and Species Extinction

Two Christmas traditions have come under attack in recent years from environmentalists: Christmas cards and Christmas trees.
Paper cards are seen as wasteful and, for some people, going card-free is another way of going green. They also argue that in a world of e-mail, Skype, Facebook and Twitter, people are in touch all the time anyway; they no longer need the yearly card that connects them with long lost friends. If you want to send Christmas greetings, there are free e-cards, which get the job done with no postage or wasted paper.
However, especially for people who didn’t grow up with e-mail, there is something missing from a Christmas e-mail. The first Christmas cards appeared in London in 1843 and were designed by the same man who had introduced the world’s first postage stamp three years earlier. His name was Sir Henry Cole.
They rose in popularity throughout the 20th century. Many people sent cards that were sold for charity. The most famous of these are the ones sold for UNICEF. In the UK this year, in the three weeks before Christmas, the post office expects to handle 100 million cards every day. Environmental awareness also means that nowadays many people recycle their cards; this helps raise money to plant more trees, as well as recreating more paper.
When we think of trees at Christmas, there is one that immediately springs(躍入)mind---the evergreen tree that people decorate with ornaments and place their presents under. The custom dates back almost a thousand years to Germany. Nowadays 33 to 36 million Christmas trees are produced in America and 50 to 60 million in Europe each year. Some trees are sold live with roots and soil so people can plant them later and reuse them next year.
Some people prefer artificial trees as they are reusable and much cheaper than their natural alternative. However, environmentalists point out that they are made from petroleum (石油) products and so have many pollution issues.
小題1:What is the main idea of the article?
A.To introduce the history of two typical Christmas traditions.
B.To explain the debate about some Christmas traditions.
C.To analyze how two Christmas traditions grew in popularity.
D.To point out the problems caused by celebrating Christmas.
小題2:What does the underlined word “They” in the fourth paragraph probably mean?
A.Many peopleB.Christmas e-mailsC.Postage stampsD.Christmas cards
小題3:Some people suggest getting rid of paper cards because     .
a. they cannot be recycled         b. they are not environmentally friendly
c. they are mostly sold for charity  d. the e-cards have many advantages over them
e. they are not as necessary as they used to be for people
A.a(chǎn), b, dB.a(chǎn), c, dC.b, d, eD.b, c, e
小題4:What can we conclude from the article?
A.The first Christmas cards were designed earlier than the world’s first stamps.
B.This year has seen a dramatic drop in Christmas card sales.
C.Environmentalists advise people to buy cards that are sold for charity.
D.Growing environmental awareness is encouraging people to recycle their cards.
小題5:Which of the following statements in TRUE according to the article?
A.There is always a wider Christmas tree market in America than in Europe.
B.The custom of decorating Christmas trees first appeared in Britain.
C.Some people prefer to buy live trees that can be reused next year.
D.Artificial trees are better than natural ones in all aspects.
