It was a dark and cold night. The car driver didn’t have even one passenger all day. When he went by the railway station, he saw a young man coming out with two bags in his hands. So he quickly opened the door of the car and asked, “Where do you want to go, sir?”

“To the Star Hotel,” the young man answered. When the car driver heard that, he didn’t feel happy. The young man would give him only three dollars because the hotel was not far from the railway station. But suddenly, he had an idea. He took the passenger through many streets of the big city.

After a long time, the car finally arrived at the hotel. “You should pay me fifteen dollars,” the car driver said to the young man. “What! Fifteen dollars? Do you think I’m a fool? Only last week I took a car from the railway station to this same hotel and I only gave the driver thirteen dollars. I know how much I have to pay for the trip. Every object tells a story. Even the most ordinary objects can present to us powerful images. Sometimes it is the ordinary nature of these objects that actually makes them so extraordinary. Such is the case with an old leather shoe in a museum in Alaska. At first glance it does not look like much. It is a woman’s shoe of a style popular in the 1890s. But what is unique(獨特的) about this shoe is where it was found. It was discovered on the Checkout Pass, the famous trail used by the people seeking gold in Alaska. Who it belonged to or why it was left there is not known. Was it perhaps dropped by accident as the woman climbed up the 1500 stairs carved outface? Or did she throw away goods that she didn’t need in order to travel lighter?
Over 100, 000 people with “gold fever” made this trip hoping to become millionaires. Few of them understood that on their way they would have to cross a harsh wildness. Unprepared for such a dangerous journey, many died of starvation and exposure to the cold weather.
The Canadian government finally started requiring the gold seekers to bring one ton of supplies with them. This was thought to be enough for a person to survive for one year. They would carry their supplies in backpacks(背包) each weighing up to fifty pounds; it usually took at least 40 trips to get everything to the top and over the pass. Whoever dropped the shoe must have been a brave and determined woman. Perhaps she was successful and made it to Alaska. Perhaps she had to turn back in defeat. No one will ever know for sure, but what we do know is that she took part in one of the greatest adventures in the 19th century.
【小題1】The ordinary woman’s leather shoe is considered unusual because ______.

A.it was an important clue to life in the past
B.it was found on a famous trail
C.it at one time belonged to a VIP
D.it was a fashionable shoe at that time
【小題2】According to this passage, many people who went to Alaska ______.
A.eventually became millionaires B.brought with them many shoes
C.had conflicts with the Eskimos D.were not properly equipped
【小題3】 The Canadian government made gold seekers bring one year’s supplies with them so that ______.
A.they would not die of hunger and cold
B.the army would have enough food for fighting a war
C.they would change these goods with the Eskimos
D.the supplies would make Alaska rich
【小題4】No matter what happened to the woman who owned the shoe, ______.
A.she must have lived a happy life
B.she certainly dropped the shoe on purpose
C.her adventurous spirit is definitely admired
D.her other shoes were equally fashionable

Adults usually do not remember most of the things that are taught by their teachers at school. But this story is one such lesson that I will never forget. Every time I drift off course, I think of this story.
It was a normal Monday morning, and my teacher was teaching us on important things in life and about devoting ourselves to what is important to us. This is how the story went:
An old man lived in a certain part of London, and he would wake up every morning and go to the subway. He would get onto the train right to Central London, and then sit at the street corner and beg. He would do this every single day of his life. He sat at the same street corner and begged for almost 20 years.
His house was dirty, and a stench (惡臭) came out of the house and it smelled terrible. The neighbors could not stand the smell any more, so they called for the police officers to clear the place. The officers knocked down the door and cleaned the house. There were small bags of money all over the house that he had collected over the years.
The police counted the money, and they soon realized that the old man was a millionaire (百萬富翁). They waited outside his house expecting to share the good news with him. When the old man arrived home that evening, one of the officers told him that there was no need for him to beg any more as he was a rich man now, a millionaire.
But the old man said nothing at all; he went into his house and locked the door. The next morning he woke up as usual, went to the subway, sat at the street corner and continued to beg.
Clearly, this old man had no great plans, dreams or anything significant (有意義的) for his life. We learn nothing from this story other than staying focused on the things we enjoy doing.
【小題1】The neighbor called the police because ______.

A.the old man kept begging money from them every day
B.there was something dangerous in the old man’s house
C.the old man wouldn’t buy tickets for the train
D.they couldn’t bear the smell from the old man’s house
【小題2】When the old man knew he was a millionaire, he ______.
A.remained calmB.became excited
C.felt worriedD.became nervous
【小題3】What lesson do we learn from the story?
A.Make great plans for your life.
B.Keep on doing what you like.
C.Do something that is good to society.
D.Depend on yourself rather than others.
