A lot of teachers hate doodlers(亂寫亂畫的人)during classes. "Pay attention!" Teachers will often
warn doodling students, sure that they must be daydreaming.
However, according to a recent study, doodling while listening to a boring lecture helps concentrate(集中)the attention:
Andrade, a psychology professor in England asked participants to listen to a boring lecture. Half the
participants were told to color in squares and circles freely on a piece of paper while listening to the
lecture. The other half weren’t given a task. After it was over, the participants were asked to retell the
lecture.
Those given the doodling task (color in squares and circles) remembered 29 percent more information
than the non-doodlers. Andrade said.
"If someone is doing a boring task, like listening to a dull conversation, they may start daydream,"
said Professor Andrade.
"Daydreaming distracts(使分心)them from the task, resulting in poorer performance. A  simple task,
like doodling, can stop them from daydreaming without affecting their performance at the task," he said.
So the next time you're doodling during a class, and you hear "pay attention", you can tell the teacher
with confidence that you've been paying attention to every word.

A. a boring lecture is given
B. an interesting story is told
C. watching a long TV program
D. having a conversation with the teacher
4. Professor Andrade thinks                .

A Tight Situation

Sometimes funny memories are the best special way to remember a beloved lover. It helps take away some of the feeling of loss. Before he passed away, my husband loved to share this story with our friends. Now, it makes a smile to share this story with you.

Our neighbor's son was getting married in 1971 at a church, and we were invited. We immediately rushed out for the store, and I bought a nice dress with a jacket. The dress was a little tight, but I had a month before the June 30- wedding and I would lose a few pounds.

June 29 came and, of course, I had not lost a single pound; in fact, I had gained two. But, I thought a new girdle(健美褲)would solve my problem. So on our way to the wedding, we stopped once again at the store.I ran in and told the clerk I needed a size large girdle.

The clerk found the box with the described girdle, marked “L”, and asked if I would like to try it on.“Oh, no, large will fit just right.I won't need to try it on.”

The next morning was hot, so I waited to get dressed until about forty-five minutes before time to go.I opened the girdle box only to find a new $ 49.95 girdle in a size small.Since it was too late to find another one and the dress wouldn't fit right without a girdle, a fight broke out between me and the girdle.Have you ever tried to shake twenty pounds of potatoes into a five-pound bag? Finally, my husband, laughing like crazy, got hold of each side and shook me down into it, and I was ready to go.

As we walked into the church, he asked if I could make it.Now, he was getting worried because I was breathing funny.I told him that I would. It lasted one hour, twenty-two minutes and eight-and-one-half seconds, and the minister blessed everything except my girdle!

My knees were blue and my legs lost all the feeling. My husband was asking questions and trying to comfort me.

As soon as the minister pronounced them married, I rushed out with my husband.“Please, just get me out of here!” I said.

We ran out to our car, and once there he opened the front and back passenger doors against the next car.Right there, before God, human and the wedding party, I took off that girdle. When the girdle flew out of my hand and landed under the car next to ours, my husband was laughing so hard and we drove away.

Over the years, he and I had wondered what the people of that church thought the next morning when they found$49.95, size small girdle in their parking lot.

A British student writing for the Guardian's website recently attracted the criticism of
thousands of readers with his very first post.
Max Gogarty, 19, had started a blog about his trip to India and Thailand. The idea was
not paiticularly original and. in many people's view, the writing wasn't either.Within minutes,
people began to post negative comments:"l've been more entertained cleaning mould from
my fridge than I was reading your first post. "
So how did Max land his job? The Guardian's online community soon reached their own
conclusion :" Great to see nepotism ( 任人唯親) is alive and well."said one poster.
Max's father is a travel writer who had previously published work in the Guardian.
Within minutes, one poster had provided a link to an article from 2002 , in which Max's
dad writes about a trip to Thailand with his family. Many were quick to suppose Max had
used his father's connections to get his job. By the end of the next day, the criticism was so
heavy that the blog was closed, but the damage had been done.
From Facebook to Wikipedia. social networking and gossip websites all over the
Internet were discussing Max's case.
Max's experience highlights the difference between traditional media and the Internet.
As online community specialist DanWilsonwritesinhisblog: " Inthe blogosphere respect
comes from below. Readers have power and opinions that count. You've got to be real
and attractive to the people who read you. "
Part of the reason for this is that falsehoods and half-truths canbe exposed(曝光)
immediately online. For example, the Guardian's travel editor attempted to defend publishing
the story. He said he'd called Max because of his track record and talent. But then one
reader pointed out: " Didn't you post yesterday sayingMax got in touch with us because
he writes occasionally for the TV program Skins'? Are you a liar?"
What we can learn here is to be careful when we read and write online. Always be
sure to think about why a person might be writing something, and don't necessarily believe
what we read.

A rainforest is an area covered by tall trees with the total high rainfall spreading quite equally through
the year and the temperature rarely dipping below 16℃. Rainforests have a great effect on the world
environment because they can take in heat from the sun and adjust the climate.
Without the forest cover, these areas would reflect more heat into the atmosphere, warming the rest
of the world. Losing the rainforests may also influence wind and rainfall patterns, potentially causing
certain natural disasters all over the world.
In the past hundred years, humans have begun destroying rainforests in search of three major
resources (資源):land forcrops, wood for paper and other products ,land for raising farm animals. This
action affects the environment as a whole. For example, a lot of carbon dioxide (二氧化碳) in the air
comes from burning the rainforests. People obviously have a need for the resources we gain from cutting
trees but we will suffer much more than we will benefit.
There are two main reasons for this. Firstly, when people cut down trees , generally they can only use
the land for a year or two. Secondly, cutting large sections of rainforests may provide a good supply of
wood right now,but in the long run it actually reduces the world's wood supply.
Rainforests are often called the world's drug store. More than 25% of the medicines we use today
come from plants in rainforests. However, fewer than l% of rainforest plants have been examined for
their medical value. It is extremely likely that our best chance to cure diseases lies somewhere in the
world's shrinking rainforests.
1. Rainforests can help to adjust the climate because they_________.
A.reflect more heat into the atmosphere
B. bring about high rainfall throughout the world
C. rarely cause the temperature to drop lower than 16℃
D. reduce the effect of heat from the sun on the earth
2. What  does  the  word "this" underlined in the third paragraph refer to?
A. We will lose much more than we can gain.
B. Humans have begun destroying rainforests.
C. People have a strong desire for resources.
D. Much carbon dioxide comes from buming rainforests.
3. It can be inferred from the text that____________.
A. we can get enough resources without rainforests
B. there is great medicine potential in rainforests
C. we will grow fewer kinds of crops in the gained land
D. the level of annual rainfall affects wind patterns
4. What might be the best title for the text?
A. How to Save Rainforests
B. How to Protect Nature
C. Rainforests and the Environment
D. Rainforests and Medical Development

A university math tutor has discovered the science behind "singledom",finding that our chances of finding
the perfect partner are just 1 in 285,000.Peter Backus,a tutor at the University of Warwick, published his
"Why I Don't Have a Girlfriend" paper after a threeyear love drought.
His unconventional study uses a famous math formula called The Drake Equation (德雷克等式),which
was first used to estimate the existence of extraterrestrial (地球以外) life.
The results don't look promising for British singles.30yearold Mr Backus found that out of the 30 million
women in the UK,only 26 would be suitable girlfriends for him.
The dull equation takes into account the number of  women aged  24  to 34, living in his home city of
London, and who are single, meaning his chances of meeting his dream woman on a night out are slim.
The economics expert said: " There are  26 women in London with whom I  might have a wonderful
relationship. So, on a given night out in London there is a 0.0000034%  chance of meeting one of  these
special people.That's a 1 in 285,000 chance,so it's not great."
The puzzling Drake equation reads: N=R* x Fp x Ne x Fi x Fc x L,and helped pioneering scientist
Professor Drake to predict that there could be 10,000 civilizations in our galaxy.
Mr Backus simply replaced the original equation with his own criteria for a dream date, which included
the percentage of women likely to find him attractive, and the number of girls aged 24~34 in London. He
said:"The research may sound depressing to people looking for love, but the_good_news_for_singles is,it's
probably not your fault!"

A.whether there exists life out of our planet
B.the possibility of his being able to find love
C.how to get rid of singledom
D.what math can do to serve our daily life
2.What does Mr Backus think of the result of his research?
A.Optimistic.
B.Depressing.
C.Unrealistic.
D.Exciting.
3.What can we learn from the first paragraph?
A.Mr Backus' major research field is "singledom".
B.Mr Backus found a girlfriend three years ago.
C.Mr Backus' new thesis will surely be well received.
D.Mr Backus has been searching for love for long.
4.By "the good news for singles" in the last sentence,Mr Backus probably mean________.
A.you don't have to blame yourself for remaining single
B.maybe the discovery is not reliable at all

5.Which of the following statements is true?
A.This passage could be published in a scientific magazine.
