Traditionally, it has been the worker's role to work and management's role to manage.
Managers have planned and directed the finds operations with little thought of consulting the labor force. Managers have rarely felt forced to obtain the worker's opinions or to explain their decisions to their employees. At most, companies have provided "suggestion boxes" in which workers could place ideas for improving procedures. In recent years, however, many management specialists have been arguing that workers are more than sellers of labor—they have a vital stake (利害關(guān)系) in the company and may be able to make significant contributions to its management. Furthermore, major company decisions affect workers and their dependants. This is particularly true of plant closings, which may put thousands on the unemployment lines. Should workers, then, play a stronger role in management?
Workers should have a role in management. At the very least, the labor force should be informed of major policy decisions. A common complaint among ordinary workers is the lack of information about company policies and actions. Between 1980 and 1985 about five million workers were the victims of plant closings and permanent layoffs (失業(yè)) , often with no warning. At least 90 days' notice ought to he given in such circumstances so that workers have time to adjust. Management should consult workers before closing a plant, because the workers might be able to suggest ways of improving productivity and reducing costs and might be willing to make concessions (妥協(xié)) that will help keep the plant operating.
It should become a general practice to include workers in some managerial decision making. There ought to be representatives of the workers on the firm's board of directors or other major policy-making groups. If ordinary workers are given a voice in the planning and management of the work flow, they will help to make improvements, their spirits will rise, and their productivity will increase. As a further incentive (激勵(lì)), they must be given a share in the company's profits. This can be done through employee stock ownership plans (員工持股計(jì)劃), bonuses, or rewards for efficiency and productivity. Finally, when a plant can no longer operate at a profit, the workers should be given the opportunity to purchase the plant and run it themselves.
1.What can we learn about managers from Paragraph l?
A. They were not quite qualified.
B. They disliked "suggestion boxes".
C. They never consulted the labor force.
D. They seldom obtained workers' opinions.
2.In recent years, many management specialists have been arguing that workers ________.
A. are not sellers of the products any longer
B. should have a say in management of the company
C. are less affected by company decisions than before
D. are able to make the final decisions for the company
3.According to the passage, what happened between 1980 and 1985?
A. Workers did not make necessary concessions.
B. Many companies were closed because of strikes.
C. Managers consulted workers before closing a plant.
D. About 5 million workers were laid off without advance notice.
4.If they are not given a voice in managerial decision making, workers ________.
A. cannot get a share in the company's profits
B. will not have the opportunity to purchase the plant
C. may lack the incentive to increase their productivity
D. can still get bonuses for efficiency and productivity

Studying at an university in the UK have been a good experience for me. When I first arrived, I find life very hard as I didn’t know anybody here, but I soon got to know other Chinese student. Later I became accustomed to talk with people from various cultures. Besides, I made fewer friends.
During my study, I chose to live in with my classmates in the dormitory. I think it’s better than living in a British family because I can meet people from different countries easy. The courses here are excellent. I enjoy the way the teachers give lessons. We encouraged to think for ourselves, which is quite different from that I have experienced before.

There is one type of illness in the world that has a severe effect on more people than anything else and is very deadly. If untreated, this illness could affect everything you do. What is this illness? Depression. Serious depression requires professional treatment. Self-induced depression is something each of us can change.
Everyone’s circumstances are different, but the causes of self-induced depression are common: low self-esteem, hurtful thinking and a bad attitude.
So how can we change the way we think, feel, and have a cheerful attitude?
First we must look at ourselves, truly and honestly examining our motives for what we wish to accomplish. If you are dissatisfied because you feel you haven’t or can’t do anything, then one step is needed—to set goals.
Always start your goals relatively small and easy to attain. Think of them as sand; one grain may be insignificant(微不足道的) but as a group they form the beach. Once you have set and attained small goals for yourself, move on to slightly larger, more challenging goals. It takes not just setting goals but positive thinking. How can we obtain this?
There are a number of factors that can make us think negatively and one of those is diet.In my opinion, a person who eats a lot of take-out and fast food is feeding their body junk. Start by eating better foods which give the body much NEEDED minerals. If your physical body is happy, it’s much easier for your mental body or “thinking ability” to be happy.[
Next, exercise. Half an hour a day is recommended for positive well-being. Then think about good memories you had, or generally think of things that make you smile. Remember, everything you wear costs money but to wear a smile is free. A smile can be the difference between an average day and a great day.
If you follow these steps, positive change is on the way.
1.Which of the statements about depression is TRUE?
A. Depression is a kind of illness that can’t be cured like some cancer.
B. Depression can all be cured successfully by doctors in an easy way.
C. Those who suffer from depression live in the same circumstances.
D. Those who suffer from depression hold negative attitudes.
2.According to the passage we can learn that ________.
A. a practical goal can help people to achieve a sense of success
B. we shouldn’t be satisfied with small goals that are insignificant
C. we should avoid challenging goals that may result in failure
D. people can enjoy happiness even if they set inappropriate goals
3.What can we infer from the reading passage?
A. Those who can achieve small goals can surely achieve big ones.
B. Depression has something to do with the food people eat.
C. You can only exercise half an hour if you want to get rid of depression.
D. Smile makes no sense to the feeling in daily life.

When I was six, Dad brought home a dog one day, who was called “Brownie” My brothers and I all loved Brownie and did different things with her. One of us would walk her, another would feed her, then there were baths, playing catch and many other games, Brownie in return, loved each and every one of us. One thing that most touched my heart was that she would go to whoever was sick and just be with them and we always felt better when she was around.
One day, as I was getting her food, she chewed up (咬破) one of Dad’s shoes, which had to be thrown away in the end. I knew Dad would be mad and I had to let her know what she did was wrong. When I looked at her and said, “Bad girl,” she looked down at the ground and then went and hid. I saw a tear in her eyes.
Brownie turned out to be more than just our family pet, she went everywhere with us. People would stop and ask if they could pet her. Of course she’d let anyone pet her. She was just the most lovable dog. There were many times when we’d be out walking and a small child would come over and pull up her hair, she never barked (吠) or tried to get away. Funny thing is she would smile. This frightened people because they thought she was showing her teeth. Far from the truth, she loved everyone.
Now many years have passed since Brownie died of old age. I still miss days when she was with us.
1.What would Brownie do when someone was ill in the family?
A. Keep them company B. Touch them gently.
C. Play games with them. D. Look at them sadly.

A. world eat anything when hungry B. loved playing hide-and-seek
C. felt sorry for her mistake D. disliked the author’s dad
3.Why does the author say that Brownie was more than just a family pet?
A. She was treated as a member of the family.
B. She played games with anyone she liked.
C. She went everywhere with the family.

4.Some people got frightened by Brownie when she .
A. barked B. smiled
