Passage One Americans are crazy for work. There was a time when things might have gone in a different direction. With unemployment at a nine-year high and many workers worried about losing their jobs, work is not the paradise that economists once imagined. Instead, the job market is unsure today as it was in the early 1980s, when business began a wave of restructuring. Many workers today are left feeling uneasy, unsatisfied, and underappreciated.
Passage Two As US Secretary of State Colin Powell increased the pressure to go to war, America's fear of attack rose. Last week, the American government raised its official threat level to the second highest security alert (安全警報). For the Bush's government, those terrorist threats only underline the pressing need to go to war. But for many America's friends, any US-led war against Iraq could set off a new round of terrorist atttacks both in Europe and the Arab world. In a long presentation to the United Nations Security Council last week, Powell thought that American intelligence could shame and shock the UN into giving in to the USA.
Passage Three On February 3, President George W. Bush published a budget (預算) which is full of great but doubtful reforms(改革方案). Bush's budget plan is to prove supply-side economic theory, which believes that big cuts in certain tax rates will push long-term growth and finally avoid any shortage of the state income. Some economists worry that the latest round of tax changes will not repair the nation. As a whole, Bush's reform plan “is hard to tell whether it works or not,” says a director of the Concord Coalition.
1.Which of the following is TRUE according to the three short passages?
[ ]
A.In the 1980s economy in America was fairly good.
B.American economists have great faith in Bush's economic reform plan.
C.Mr Powell was sure that according to the information they had got about Iraq they could persuade the UN to agree on a war against Iraq.
D.The American people have never been so interested in their jobs as they are now.
2.What is the meaning of the underlined word “underline” in the second passage?
[ ]
A.Draw a line under something.
B.Make something pleasant.
C.Cause people's interest.
D.Make people pay more attention.
3.Which of the following pictures does Passage One match according to the meaning?

“Ladies and gentlemen, we got him!”
With those words, Paul Bremer, the US's top administrator (行政官員) in Iraq, told the world that Saddam Hussein had been caught.
Saddam was found last Saturday night hiding in a hole on the land of his former cook. He had a gun with him when he was found by US soldiers, but did not use it. He also had US $ 750, 000.“He was quite cooperative (合作的). Not one shot was fired, ” said Richardo Sanches , the US’s top army official in Iraq.
Saddam Hussein was the leader of Iraq from 1979 to April 2003.In 1990, he went to warwith Kuwait, one of Iraq’s neighbors. Iraq’s army killed many Kurds (庫爾得人) living there. The US and other countries went to war with Iraq in 1991 to get the Iraq army out of Kuwait. The war was won quickly by the American-led army. But Saddam was left to lead Iraq.
In 2003, America said Iraq had weapons of mass destruction (大規(guī)模殺傷性武器) and decided to go to war with Saddam again.
The US-led army occupied (占領) Iraq in April. But they could not find Saddam. Saddam had around 30 hiding places in the country and he moved among them every four hours. The US-led army only found him after being told where he was by one of his former workers.
America and Britain now want to put Saddam on trial for “war crimes” , such as killing Kurds in the 1990s.
George W. Bush, the US President, wants Saddam to “ pay the ultimate penalty (終極懲罰)”for such crimes. By that, he means the death penalty. The UN and European countries, though, do not want Saddam to be put to death.
1.Saddam Hussein led Iraq for ________years.

Although man has known asbestos for many hundreds of years, it was not until 160 years ago that it was mined for the first time on the North American continent. H. W. Johns, owner of a New York City Supply Shop for roofers, was responsible for(對…負責) the opening of that first mine.
Mr. Johns was given a piece of asbestos which had been found in Italy. He experimented with the material and then showed its surprising powers to his customers. After putting on a pair of asbestos gloves, which looked much like ordinary work gloves, he took red-hot coals from the fireplace and played with them in his hands. How astonished the customers were to discover that he was not burned at all. You can well imagine that he had increasing business in asbestos roofing materials. However, because it was very expensive to transport (carry) them from Italy to the United States, Mr. Johns sent out a young scientist to seek a source nearer home. This young man found great vein(巖脈), in the province of Quebec in Canada.
Ever since 1881 Quebec has led the world in the production of this unusual mineral, which is made up of magnesium, silicon, iron, and oxygen. When it is mined, the asbestos is heavy, just as you would expect a mineral to be. When it is separated, a strange thing happens; the rock breaks down into fine, soft, soapy fibres(纖維).
Scientists do not know why the rock can be separated easily into threads(線), but they have found thousands of uses of this fireproof material, of the so-called “cloth of stone”.
1. Which title best expresses the main idea of this passage?
A. Asbestos mined in Canada B. Fireproof matter
C. A “wonder” mineral D. A new roofing material
2. Johns proved his ability as a salesman by_______.
A. going into roofing business B. carrying asbestos from Italy
C. sending a trained scientist D. showing the use of asbestos gloves
3. Which is the most important character of asbestos that the author wants to show us?
A. It is like thread. B. It feels soapy.
C. It burns easily. D. It is unusually heavy.
4. The author’s main purpose in writing this passage was to _______.
