There are two ways to save money traveling. The first way is to get the best deals on the specific things you want. There is a limitation to this type of approach (途徑,方法) though. If you find the lowest price on the best hotel in Honolulu at the height of the season, you will save money, but still have a very expensive vacation. Trying to get exactly what you want will generally be an expensive proposition, in travel and in life.
The other approach is to be a true opportunist. This will be difficult for some of you, and entirely unacceptable to others. Nonetheless (盡管如此),the travelers who get to travel the most, go to the widest variety of places, learn the most and do the most, are the opportunists. This will be true until you are so wealthy that you have no monetary (貨幣的;錢的)limits.
The first time I went to Ecuador, I went there because it was cheap. If it wasn’t, I would have had a great time—somewhere else. The trip lasted a month, and cost $1045, which included airfare and even the $130 fee for a guide to take me to the top or glacier (冰川) covered Mount Chimborazo.
I cut the cost by taking a bus from my home in Michigan to Miami, and back again when I returned from Ecuador. The round-trip ticket cost $158. The round-trip flight to Quito from Miami was only $256, because it was a courier (信使,通訊員) flight, which meant I signed for some luggage(car parts), and could only take carry-on luggage.
Never did I feel deprived, or bored. I had a great time, eating wherever it was cheap and clean, doing all sorts of inexpensive, but interesting things, and traveling across the country to climb Chimborazo. I also met and fell in love with my wife Ana.
Being an opportunist means you’ll have just as much variety, and probably almost everything you want—eventually. You just have to stop trying to get exactly what you want exactly when you want it. If the guide that took me up Chimborazo hadn’t dropped his price from $200 to $130, I would have spent $2 for a bus and gone hiking on EI Altar, another great Andean mountain. That would have left me with enough money for several other minor adventures.
【小題1】The underlined phrase “the best deals” in the first paragraph probably refers to ______.
A.the best service | B. the lowest price |
C.the cheapest goods | D. the best approaches |
A.$128 | B. $256 | C. $207 | D. $414 |
A.save money for minor adventures |
B.cut down traveling costs. |
C.deal with different situations |
D.become opportunist travelers |
A.went hiking on El Altar |
B.traveled with his wife in Ecuador |
C.is an opportunist traveler |
D.likes traveling around the world |

A friend is better than fortune. A friend is worse than poison in some cases.
The two sentences above have opposite meanings and seem to be unreasonable, but they can be explained as follows: the first refers to all good friends who drive us towards good while the second all bad ones who lead us into bad ways.
My ideal friend is of course a good friend whose goodness is shown below — he has no bad habits, such as smoking and drinking. He lives in frugality (節(jié)儉). He studies hard so as not to waste his golden time. At home he honors his parents and loves his brothers; at school he respects his teachers and shares the feelings of his classmates. He treats those truly who are true to him. In a word, he has all the good characteristics that I don’t have. I can follow him as a model. With his help I can be free from all difficulties.
Indeed, if I have such a person as my friend, I shall never fear difficulty and I shall never know the existence of the word “failure”.

The word “death” is a word many Chinese friends tell me I should not say aloud. They advise me to avoid the word because only speaking of it may bring ill fortune. I deeply believe, however, that to know how to live, we must also know how to die. The problem is how we talk about death.
Like everyone in Taiwan this week, I have had “Tomb Sweeping Day”. I am proud to be part of a people whose culture sends millions of families to cemeteries on this special day to share memories and endless love.
Today, eight days after the death of Pope John Paul II, millions of people of all backgrounds still grieve(悲痛) his passing away. He was a deeply human person who knew how to laugh and show emotions, a writer with a gift for words a leader who appealed to us by the sheer light of his love for life.
On the same day and only hours before the Holy Father left us, a friend of mine named Veronica McBride died of cancer in a small Wisconsin city. My friend Veronica was 52 years old. She was an attractive, humorous young woman who, as the saying goes, “never married”. She published several humor books with her mother, Mary McBride. She enjoyed traveling, and for years sent Christmas card photos of herself standing beside monuments or odd animals. She fought cancer for five years. She joked about her treatment keeping her pretty because it kept her thin, and told me she didn’t mind losing her hair because of chemo therapy. “I get to wear nice wigs!”
The last time I saw Veronica was when I visited her family on a sunny day in August in 2003. When she burst into the front door later and saw me in the living room, she ignored me completely in her hurry to hug her newest baby nephew, leaving me shaking my head in laughter at her.
As we look to the significance of the Holy Father and his life, surely we must also keep our eyes open to see the wonder and goodness in ordinary people who show us how to live and how to die.
【小題1】The purpose of the article is ___________.
A.to memorize his friend Veronica |
B.to talk about the significance of life and death |
C.to teach us how to face life and death |
D.to compare his friend and the Holy Father Pope John Paul II |
A.a(chǎn) medical treatment | B.a(chǎn) kind of cancer |
C.a(chǎn) kind of medicine | D.the newest machine |
A.Because they are both the persons he admires. |
B.Because they have a lot in common. |
C.Because he wants to show that ordinary people can be great as well. |
D.Because he wants to memorize them both. |
A.brave | B.sportive | C.humorous | D.energetic |

On a hill 600 feet above the surrounding land, we watch the lines of rain move across the scene, the moon rise over the hills, and the stars appear in the sky. The views invite a long look from a comfortable chair in front of the wooden house.
Every window in our wooden house has a view, and the forest and lakes seldom look the same as the hour before. Each look reminds us where we are.
There is space for our three boys to play outside, to shoot arrows, collect tree seeds, build earth houses and climb trees.
Our kids have learned the names of the trees, and with the names have come familiarity and appreciation. As they tell all who show even a passing interest, maple(楓樹)makes the best fighting sticks and white pines are the best climbing trees.
The air is clean and fresh. The water from the well has a pleasant taste, and it is perhaps the healthiest water our kids will ever drink. Though they have one glass a day of juice and the rest is water, they never say anything against that.
The seasons change just outside the door. We watch the maples turn every shade of yellow and red in the fall and note the poplars’(楊樹)putting out the first green leaves of spring. The rainbow smelt fills the local steam as the ice gradually disappears, and the wood frogs start to sing in pools after being frozen for the winter. A family of birds rules our skies and flies over the lake.
【小題1】What can be learned from Paragraph 2?
A.The scenes are colorful and changeable. |
B.There are many windows in the wooden house. |
C.The views remind us that we are in a wooden house. |
D.The lakes outside the windows are quite different in color. |
A.the kids like playing in trees | B.the kids are very familiar with trees |
C.the kids have learned much knowledge | D.the kids find trees useful learning tools |
A.The change of seasons is easily felt. |
B.The seasons make the scenes change. |
C.The weather often changes in the forest. |
D.The door is a good position to enjoy changing seasons. |
A.To describe the beauty of the scene around the house. |
B.To introduce her children’s happy life in the forest. |
C.To show that living in the forest is healthful. |
D.To share the joy of living in the nature. |

科目:高中英語(yǔ) 來(lái)源:2013屆甘肅省張掖中學(xué)高三第二次月考英語(yǔ)試卷(帶解析) 題型:閱讀理解
Down-to-earth means being honest, open, and easy to deal with. It is a pleasure to find someone who is down-to-earth. A person who is down-to-earth is easy to talk to. He or she accepts others as equals. A down-to-earth person may be an important member of society, of course, but they do not let their importance go to their heads, and they do not consider themselves to be better than others who are less important. Someone who is filled with self-importance and pride, often without cause, is said to have his nose in the air. There is no way a person with his nose in the air can be down-to-earth.
Americans use another expression that is similar in some way to down-to-earth. The expression is both feet on the ground. Someone with both feet on the ground is a person with a good understanding of reality. He has what is called common sense. He may have dreams but he does not allow them to block his knowledge of what is real. The opposite kind of person is one who has his head in the clouds. A man with his head in the clouds is a dreamer whose mind is not in the world. Sometimes such a dreamer can be brought back to reality; sharp words from the teacher, for example, can usually get a daydreaming student to put both feet back on the ground.
The person who is down-to-earth usually has both feet on the ground. But the opposite is not always true. Someone with both feet on the ground may not be as open and easy to deal with as someone who is down-to-earth. When we have both our feet firmly on the ground, we are realistic and we act honestly and openly toward others, and our lives are like the ground below us, solid and strong.
【小題1】If a person has his nose in the air, he ____.
A.is down to the earth |
B.is easy to deal with |
C.a(chǎn)lways thinks he is more important than others |
D.is confident |
A.is in touch with reality, and doesn’t have any dreams |
B.has some dreams but he is realistic |
C.is honest, open and easy to deal with |
D.is honest, open but hard to deal with |
A.the person who has his nose in the air is not true |
B.a(chǎn) man with his head in the clouds is often not intelligent |
C.the opposite direction is always wrong |
D.a(chǎn) person who has both feet on the ground may not be down-to-earth |
