We live in a time when the day is controlled by selfishness and greed. The battle of selfishness
and greed has been increasingly fierce and there have been many casualties, but desire has tired too
many people and we find that the populated areas of the twenty-first century have lost hope for the
boring symphony of selfishness. Now I have several suggestions that will get you back on your feet,
so that you can continue walking down the road of life with your head held high, arm in arm with
your fellow man as equal.
Money isn’t everything. There exists a common understanding that everything around us is
measured by money and an assumption that the meaning of life is to make as much of it as humanly
possible, so that you can live a comfortable and luxurious life. It is clear that money is indeed necessary
to get through life, whether spent on food or shelter, but the air we breathe and the love we share are
both free and extremely rewarding. Too many people die alone, only to be remembered for their full
bank accounts or their shocking debts, so we must be remembered for our kindness to others and
contributions to society.
Share with others. A miser is a person who cares extremely about their wealth and takes from
everyone everything, with only one thing in their mind that they demand more. Not only are misers
hated by the people surrounding them, but they are also the death of many men. Some of us will
never admit that they take far more than they give. We are supposed to give a little, even if we receive
nothing in return. Show generosity to your friends, co-workers, family, neighbors and you will be on
your way to removing the greed from your life.
Act unselfishly. We must learn to act unselfishly for people and help whoever in need, not because
doing so makes us feel superior, not to expect something in return either, but because it helps them
survive, which makes them feel connected with the world, with a smile on their face and a strong
need to give to others. By acting unselfishly, we will teach others how to act unselfishly too. Next
time you stick your neck out for a selfish miser, be optimistic and think that maybe he will learn to
pay it forward by following your example.

Deciding what to watch on TV is a battle of wills that is fought in homes all over the world.
According to psychologists (心理學(xué)家), it is much more serious than simply deciding between
a soap opera and a sports program, or between pop music and politics. This television conflict
is part of a bigger power game which goes on in homes, even though most of the players do not
realize that they are playing a game at all.  "It's such a game as is not easy to notice," says
psychologist Dr David Lewis, "that many people don't even know they're playing it."
Unconsciously, people begin to play the game as soon as they meet their future husband or
wife. By the time the couple get married, the rules of game are already formed. The big decision,
like where to live and which school to send the children to, are usually joint decision. When it
comes to less important things, it's a different matter. Here is just one example of this process at
work. A husband looks through a pile of holiday brochures (小冊(cè)子) and announces his preference:
"The South of France". And his wife quickly agrees before he realizes that the only brochures she
gave him were those for the South of France. Similarly, she may decide on how the home should
be decorated, but he chooses the new car and decides what the family does at weekends.
"Family power struggles are interesting," says Dr Lewis. "Of course, some people are naturally
more dominant (占支配地位的) than others, and the most dominant personality in a family tries
to lead. These days, even though so many couples make a special effort to have a true and equal
partnership, men generally have a greater need to appear to be in physical control. Women, on
the other hand, are not so interested in physical control as in emotional control.  On the whole,
they're more controlling and can make the man think of something as his idea in the first place."
1. What is the psychologists' opinion about choosing a TV program at home?
A. It's likely to cause family quarrels.
B. It's an interesting game a family likes to play.
C. It's difficult to choose with so many programs.
D. It's a matter of power in a family.
2. According to the passage, which decision is made by the couple together?
A. How to decorate their home.
B. Where to settle down.
C. What kind of car to buy.
D. What to do at weekends.
3. What can we learn about family decisionmaking from the passage?
A. Men have the final say in the family.
B. Men are much better controlled than women.
C. Women are rather skillful in influencing men.
D. Women are emotional about important matters.
4. Which of the following is the main idea of the passage?
A. Why people fight for power at home.
B. Whose finger is on the button at home.
C. How family members play games at home.
D. What decision family members make together.

Maurice Sendak's children's book, Where the Wild Things Are, published in 1963, has become
very successful throughout the years and was made into a movie earlier this year.
The book's main character is a boy named Max who gets into trouble with his mother and is sent
to bed without any supper. Before long, Max's room magically becomes a forest, and he sails away
to a land where monsters(怪物,怪獸) live. Max isn't scared, though, and becomes king of the wild
things, but after a while, he begins feeling homesick. Max sails back home and his supper is still hot
when he arrives in his bedroom.
Many teachers and professors like this story and use it to help children develop creativity and
imagination. Melina Davis, an education professor, said she likes how the book contains a couple
of pages that have only pictures on them. "This allows children to shape the story themselves," she
said.
The book contains a few of larger words that some parents worry may confuse children, but
experts say those words help improve children's reading skills and challenge them.
Davis said the book is well written which helps kids get involved in the story. "The book talks
about what all children go through, like 'I was naughty but my mommy still loves me'," Davis said.
The book also encourages children to face their fears. "I think it's really good to show that Max
makes friends with the monsters," Davis said. "Kids can find out monsters aren't always the thing
under the bed that's going to scare them. I think this is good because it shows that the children can
go to scary places but still have a positive experience."
Since the book has been successful throughout the years, a movie was recently made and many
people are excited to see it. Davis said she thinks the movie will be wonderful but it might be a little
scary for younger children. "You don't want bad dreams over a book that's extremely wonderful,"
Davis said.

It's no secret that the world has become a very fastpaced place. Free time has been replaced by
cyber (網(wǎng)絡(luò)的) time to the point where my family feels the need to comment on my presence at the
dinner table. With all these options and distractions (使人分心的事) it can be hard to spend quality
time with the people you love.
My Dad and I have always worked around this. Over years we've learned how to watch in silence
while enjoying each other's company and by now we know what to comment on during the commercials.
Once we were watching one of our favourite shows. At the commercial he turned to me and asked
if I liked going to school.
I thought about the question for a few moments before admitting that I did.
"Do you look forward to going?"
This question seemed easier to answer, but I thought it over.
"Not all the time. Sometimes, there are classes that I dread. But then there are people I want to see
or things I want to do, so I guess it evens out."
     Dad nodded.
"You see these characters on the show? They like going to work. They look forward to it. They are
so idealistic that they go to work every day, believing they can change the world. That's why we like to
watch them."
I thought about what he was saying.
"Do you look forward to going to work?" I asked.
     Dad paused.
"I honestly don't think about it. It's not something I anticipate or dread. It's just something that I do.
I always looked forward to going to school, though. I wanted to learn. Now that I think about it, when
I first started working I did look forward to it. That's what's important. Do something that you enjoy
doing. Do something that you will look forward to. Otherwise, what's the point?"
Now I have learned that sometimes it's not the length of the talk that's important but what's said during
the talk. It is still possible to have quality time during a commercial break.
1. The father quoted the characters on the show to say that a person should have ________.
A. dream
B. belief
C. doubt
D. love
2. According to the passage, why doesn't the boy want to go to school?
A. He is afraid of being made fun of.
B. He has something important to do.
C. He loses interest in some classes.
D. He falls behind other classmates.
3. The underlined word "point" means ________.
A. mark
B. topic
C. lesson
D. goal

There are literally hundreds of national parks and wildlife areas in Africa that you can travel to. Here
are the top four travel destinations in Africa:
     Tanzania-Serengeti NP
During the annual migration, when the wildebeests and zebras pack__up and leave their living areas
to find fresher ones, the Serengeti is an astonishing place to be. It's a very good travel spot in Africa at
other times of the year too but the migration has been ranked by many as one of the wonders of the
natural world.

If you want to see the big cats, this wildlife park is the best of the best. Lion, leopard and cheetah
abound and they are relatively easy to spot because of the grassland vegetation which means you get
good views for miles around. Another big plus is the fact that going offroad is allowed and it is a big
advantage because the animals will rarely oblige you and stay next to the major roads.

For the variety of species no other place in Africa can come close to the Kruger Park. And because
it is so large it has a number of different ecosystems that you can pass through in your search for animals

Arabs consider it extremely bad manners to start talking business immediately. Even the busiest
government official always takes extra(額外的)time to be polite and  offer refreshments. No matter
how busy you are, you should make time for this.
The conference visit is a way of doing business throughout the Arab world. Frequently, you will have
to discuss your business in the presence of strangers, who may or may not have anything to do with
your business. Do not be surprised if your meeting is interrupted several times by people who come into
the room unannounced, whisper, or speak softly to the person with whom you are talking, and leave.
Making decisions quickly is not an Arab custom. There is vagueness in doing business in the Middle
East which will puzzle a new-comer. Give yourself lots of time and ask them lots of questions.
When an Arab says "yes", he may mean "maybe". When he says "maybe", he probably means "no".
You will seldom get a direct “no” from an Arab because it is considered impolite. Instead of  "no", he
will say "inshallah", which means "if God is willing." On the other hand, "yes" does not necessarily mean
"yes". A smile and a slow nod might seem like an agreement, but in fact, your host is being polite. An
Arab thinks that it is impolite to disagree with a guest.

Today we will explain a very gold saying that has had a big influence on rock-and-roll music. That
saying is "A rolling stone gathers no moss". It has several meanings. One meaning is that a person who
never settles down in one place will not be successful. Another is that someone who is always moving,
with no roots in one place, avoids responsibilities.
This proverb was said to be first used in the 1500s. But in the 1960s, the expression "rolling stone"
became famous in the world of rock-and-roll music. It became the name of a song, a rock group and
a magazine.
Experts say it all started with a song by the American singer and guitarist Muddy Waters. He was

Presley and Bob Dylan. In 1950, Muddy Waters recorded a song called "Rolling Stone".

performed for the first time in 1962. The group's members called themselves "the world's greatest rock

influential works.

"with no direction home, like a complete unknown, like a rolling stone".
In 1967, a young man named Jann Wenner started a magazine and he named it "Rolling Stone". The

In the year Shakespeare died in 1616, New England was born. This was in fact four years before
any English speakers permanently (永久) settled in that northern location. But in 1616 it was already
the subject of the book A Description of New England, by that busy explorer and promoter Captain
John Smith, who had visited the land two years before.
According to Smith, New England owes its name to Sir Francis Drake. Not that Drake ever saw or
talked about New England, but in sailing around the world he stopped in 1597 at a place on the Pacific
coast of North American and called it Nova Albion, the Latin for "New England". Following Drake's
lead, Smith called the area at a similar latitude (緯度) on the Atlantic coast by the same name, translated
into plain English.
The very words New England show the direction of Smith's thinking. This was to be an extension (延
伸) of Old England, not a new kind of community. The map in his book gives only English names for the
places of New England, and he provides a special list showing thirty American Indian names replaced by
English ones: Accormack by Plymouth, Massachusets River by Charles River, Kinebeck by
Edenborough, to list a few. Some of those changes succeeded. But what finally happened after the
Plymouth colonists landed four years later has turned out differently than Smith had imagined, for Indian
names as well as English ones still cover the new England area.
1. Captain John Smith arrived at the area New England in__________.
A. 1579
B. 1614
C. 1616
D. 1620

My bookshelves are full of dust-and with good reason. When it comes to cleaning that part of my home,
I suffer from the most serious case of avoidance (回避反應(yīng)癥).
The thing is this: when I do set out to clean and re-organize my books, which seldom happens, I place
myself into a really bad situation. No sooner do I take a title from the shelf, blow off the dust, and wipe down
the cover than I find myself sitting on the floor with legs crossed and my back against the wall. Pretty soon
books get piled up on my legs as I am reunited with old friends.
It is as if these books have voices, and each wants to say its piece. "Remember me? I was given to you
when you went into the Navy, so that you would never lack for companionship," one whispers. Another says,
"I was your first book of poems, given to you before you learned to love poetry." And a third, "I was the book
that made history so attractive to you."
Perhaps the greatest pleasure of re-organizing my books are the surprises-or better said, reunions-that
occur. During my latest book-cleaning adventure, I found one that had fallen behind the shelf:"Tales of Edgar
Allan Poe." Not an unusual title, but the words written on the first page made it very special:"With Love from
Mom and Dad, Christmas 1965." What's this? A book on the physics of lasers (激光). It is filled with
mathematical statements, and I had bought it at a library sale when I was 12, not long after the laser had been
invented. I couldn't understand a bit of it, but I did learn what "laser" meant.
What I end up with when I empty my bookshelves is a cross-section (橫剖面) of my personal history. It's
like a road cut where one sees all the layers of rock going back through time to the beginning of the simplest
life forms. The books I've read-and kept-are not just old friends. They are my résumé.
1. What could be said about the author?
A. He is too busy to tidy up his bookshelves.
B. He considers his books treasured possessions.
C. He has made a lot of notes in his books.
D. He is a lover of science books.
2. By saying that his books have voices, the author means _____.
A. they bring back happy memories
B. they are recorded in human voice
C. they say a lot about human history
D. they offer good topics for discussion
3. What does the author enjoy most from re-organizing his books?
A. Finding some missing books.
B. Putting books in good order.
C. Learning something new from the books.
D. Rediscovering interesting stories behind some books.
