When I was at primary school in the second grade, I used to follow my elder sister who is five
years older than me. She loved sports and was always playing basketball and softball. She was also
a runner and was good at it. She brought home some running awards, so I was motivated and started
running, too.
I started training at school and never missed even a day. Even if it was raining, I was training. At first
I was not very good; but as the years passed, I got better and better and started to win some competitions.
Breaking records
In 1994, I won the Mexican National Championships. Later, I won fourth place in the Pan-American
games that were held in Santiago de Chile. In 1996, I broke the Mexican record; and in 1997, I won
fourth place in the Central American Games. In 1997 and 1998, I again won the Mexican National
Championships and broke the Mexican records. Now I want to improve my personal record of 19
feet, 2 inches.
Plans for the future
I'm in Houston now, training with coach Tom Tellez at the University of Houston. He is the best
coach in the world. He also trained Carl Lewis, one of the best US athletes. I have the support of my
parents who always come with me to all my meets. I think that's why I'm where I am. Next year
I have some very important competitions. One of them is in Canada in July 1999. I hope I do well.

Host family accommodation, or living with host families, remains popular among language travel students for its advantages. These days, host families are trying to offer more in terms of quality, for they still have something to worry about.
Host family accommodation is often seen as the number-one choice for advantages in language study, cultural communication and cost of living. Staying alongside host families enables students to get enough practice for the short time of their studying so that their language acquisition is likely to become faster. Living in host families also has the advantages for students of being able to spend a lot of time communicating with their “host parents”, and get to know the local way of life, people and culture. Another advantage is that host family accommodation can sometimes be the least expensive. It attracts students for it ensures them a family type of living at a low cost.
The advantage, however, have not prevented host families from worrying. On one hand, some host families are losing their unique selling point. The problem is that the majority of hosts in big cities, now generally single and young, have less time available for students, but the selling point for host family accommodation is communication practice. On the other hand, students’ expectations have risen. They are becoming more demanding and asking for more than ever from their accommodation, as they come mainly from high socio-economic groups in their own countries.
To get out of the difficult situation, host families are now making efforts to improve the quality of service. They are trying to make living conditions better, including broadband(寬帶) Internet service, private bathroom, and access to plenty of hot water for long showers. They are also providing students with structured family activities.
It is believed that host family accommodation will keep the popularity vote with language travel students.

Bicycles are very popular around the world today. People ride their bicycles for exercise and enjoyment. In some places, people use a bicycle to get to work. In other places, bicycle riding is a very popular exercise to people who live in cities. But who invented the first bicycle?
In 1791, a Frenchman named Comte de Siverac invented and owned the first bicycle. Mrs. Sivrac rode the bicycle in Paris. The handles(把手) and the seat were wooden. This bicycle was very difficult to move. A rider even had to pick up the front wheel to change direction. Finally, the bicycle had no brakes for stopping or pedals for the feet! Riding a bicycle was a great risk!
In 1817, a German named Baron von Draus de Sauerbrun made the first bicycle better. The seat became more comfortable. The wheel could now change direction. His ride in the forest took only one hour instead of three hours on foot, which surprised people at that time.
Sauerbrun brought this kind of bicycle from Germany to France. Then Denis Johnson, an Englishman, made a bicycle for women. It had spaces for their dresses to hang down. But these bicycles still had no brakes or pedals, and riders often got hurt. These bicycles and the people who rode them were not very popular.
It took another forty-five years for the bicycle to become popular. More than 100 years later, bicycle riding is more popular than ever. In fact, in India and China, there are still many more bicycles than cars.

Before the first century, there was no newspaper at all in the world. The news was spread only by mouth. And later, people began to write newspapers. But the first newspapers were written by hand and put up on the walls in public places. The first daily newspaper was started in Rome in 59 BC. Europe didn't have regularly published newspapers until 1609, when one was started in Germany. The first regularly published newspaper in English language was printed in Amsterdam in 1620. In the next year, an English newspaper was started in London and was published once a week. The first daily English newspaper was the Daily Courant. It came out in March 1702. In 1609, Benjamin Harris printed the first American newspaper in Boston. But not long after it was first published, the government stopped the paper. Five years later, John Com bell started the Boston newsletter, and the first newspaper was published daily in the American colonies(殖民地). By 1765, the colonies had more than thirty daily newspapers. There are now about 1800 daily papers in the United States. Today, newspapers are published everywhere. To many people, they can't go without reading newspapers for a day. As a group, however, English language newspapers have the largest circulation (銷售量) in the world. But the largest circulation of a newspaper is that of the Japanese newspaper Asihimbun. It sells more than eleven million copies every day. Newspapers are playing an important part in people's life. Title: An introduction to the development of 1. ___
