After years of hearing drivers complain about scratches on their cars, Japan's Nissan Motor Company has officially announced the next big thing---a paint that not only resists scratches and scrapes, but actually repairs itself within a few days.

The new material, developed by Nippon Paint Company, contains an elastic rubbery-like resin(彈性樹脂) that is able to heal minor marks caused by car wash equipment, parking lot encounters, road debris (石頭碎片) or even on-purpose destruction. The automaker admits its results vary depending on the temperature and the depth of the damage, but adds this is the only paint like it in the world, and tests prove it works. Minor scratches, the most common type, are said to slowly fade over about a week. And once they're gone, there is no trace that they were ever there. The special paint is said to last for at least three years after it is first applied, but there is no word yet on whether more can be added after that period.

Nissan claims car washes are the worst offenders for this type of damage, accounting for at least 80 percent of all incidents. But the complete auto-healing won't come without scratching your wallet. The vehicle maker notes the special paint adds about $ 100 U.S. to the price of a car. It plans to use its new chemical mixture only on its X - Trail SUVs in Japan for now, as it looks for a more widespread presentation. And while plans to offer the feature overseas haven't been made yet, if it's a hit there, you can be almost sure market forces will drive it to these shores, as well.

1.From the article, we can find that_______.

A.the paint has already been used on cars by now

B.it beats other products of its kind in its lengthy effect

C.car damage is mainly caused by scratches and scrapes

D.marketing this paint in Europe is not under way

2.The paint used on cars can______.

A.last 3 years before it is re-applied again

B.fade only in a few days

C.help to protect cars from minor paint damage

D.reduce car scrape incidents to 20 percent

3.What can be inferred from the article?

A.The paint was developed by Nissan Motor Company.

B.The paint might work better in summer than in winter.

C.The mark on the car could disappear as soon as the paint is applied.

D.The paint is very popular in Japan.

31st October —— A team of British explorers has announced they are going to the North Pole to measure the ice cap’s thickness. The exploration will take ground-based readings (儀表的讀數(shù)) of an ice formation which most scientists agree is shrinking at an alarming rate.

Explorer Pen Hadow’s three-member team will pull a sled-fixed radar device, which measures ice density every eight centimeters, 2,000 kilometers across the Arctic and will produce millions of readings.

They will leave in February, 2008 and will face temperatures of -50℃ on a journey that will take up to 120 days. They have been testing their equipment in Britain and Canada.

Hadow is excited about the prospects (前景), “For the first time we will be able to transmit video images — webcam film of the expedition — as it unfolds so people can track us, and the whole idea is to engage as many people as we can in what we’re doing.”

New fallen snow on top of the ice makes ground-based measurements more accurate than satellite data.

“It has been in the planning stage for a while,” said Hadow. “We spent the last two years developing impulse radar (沖擊雷達(dá)), which normally is about 100 kilograms and hangs under an aircraft and so on. We’ve managed to get it down to about 4 kilograms. It’s the size of a briefcase and we are dragging it behind the sled as we go.”

The ice cap shrank enough in 2007 so that a pathway through the cap known as the Northwest Passage opened up during the melting of the Arctic summer.

Cambridge University’s Joao Rodrigues explains, “Thickness of the ice cap will determine how much solar radiation will be reflected and the heat exchange between the ocean and the atmosphere and it is thus a vital component (成分) of climate models.”

If warming trends continue, some experts predict that the Arctic Ocean could be ice-free during the summer within a few decades.

1 What would be the best title for the text?

A. Exploration to the North Pole.

B. Arctic ice cap shrinking.

C. Arctic ice survey announced.

D. Ground-based measurements of ice.

2. What is special about the exploration?

A. It will be broadcast live on the Internet.

B. Explorers will use a sled-fixed radar device.

C. Explorers will travel in extremely cold conditions.

D. Ground-based measurements are more accurate.

3. What is the purpose of the exploration?

A. To measure the ice cap’s thickness.

B. To study whether ice will disappear in the Arctic.

C. To make a film about the Arctic exploration.

D. To make people interested in what they are doing.

4. It can be inferred from the passage that ________.

A. ice in the Arctic will disappear in ten years

B. the exploration will last for half a year

C. Hadow spent two years developing a kind of radar, which is about 100 kilograms

D. if there is snow on ice, satellites can’t measure the ice thickness accurately enough

5. From the passage, we learn that ________.

A. the explorers will measure ice density every other centimeter

B. people will be able to follow the explorers and see what they are doing

C. people could go through the Northwest Passage in the 2007 Arctic summer

D. the equipment that Hadow’s team use will be tested in the United States

Many of us have heard of the saying: everything is possible if you can just believe. But few of us really know the power of faith and perseverance(堅定).  South African swimmer Natalie du Tiot embodies(體現(xiàn))those virtues.

Du Tiot, 24, became the first swimmer to compete in both the Olympic Games and the Paralympics (殘奧會)in Beijing. Although she finished 16th in the tough 10km marathon in the able-bodied Games, she has collected three golds in the Paralympics so far.

One of the most successful disabled athletes of all time, Natalie du Tiot was already a promising swimmer when she lost her leg in a motorcycle accident in 2001, at just 17.

“There are a lot of dark moments,” she said, “There are some days when I cry. But I try to remember that better days are ahead. You just go on.”

Within a few months, she was back in the swimming pool.

She still completes and still succeeds. The only difference is she has switched to longer events—from 200m and 400m individual medley to 800m and 1,500m freestyle—to make up for her loss of speed with only one leg. But she made no adjustment to her mental look(精神面貌).

“Going out in the water, it feels as if there’s nothing wrong with me. It doesn’t matter if you look different. You’re still the same as everybody else because you have the same dream.”

She is the owner of many world records, and she also won gold when competing against able-bodied swimmers in the 1,500m freestyle at the All African Games in 2007.

But there is no magic recipe(秘訣) for success. It all comes down to hard work and determination. “She is stubborn, which is good and bad,” said her coach Karoly Von Toros. “Good for the swimming, but bad for the coach.”

There is a poem that hangs on her wall that reads:

The tragedy (悲劇)of life does not lie in not reaching your goals;

The tragedy of life lies in not having goals to reach for.

1. Natalie du Tiot is a vivid example that____________________.

科目:高中英語 來源:2010-2011學(xué)年浙江省高三上學(xué)期第二次月考英語卷 題型:閱讀理解

Gauri Nanda sees a wearable computer as a handbag—one that’s built out of four-inch squares and triangles of fiber, with tiny computer chips embedded(嵌入) in it. It looks, feels and weighs like your typical leather purse.

That’s where similarities end: This bag can wirelessly keep track of your belongings and remind you, just as you’re about to leave the house, to take your wallet. It can review the weather report and suggest that you grab an umbrella. This purse can even upload your favorite songs onto your scarf.

Sure, a computing purse and scarf set may seem like the stuff of science fiction. But these devices, part of next generation of wearable computers, could become commonplace within a few years. DuPont created new super strong fibers that can conduct electricity and can be woven into ordinary-looking clothes. And the chipmaker developed chip packaging allowing wearable computers to be washed, even in the heavy-duty cycle.

As a result, these new wearable devices are different from the heavy and downright silly versions of the recent past, which often required users to be wrapped in wires and type on their stomachs. Unlike their predecessors, these new wearable computers also make economic sense. When her bag becomes commercially available in two to three years, Nanda expects it will cost around $150, which is the price of an average leather purse.

Here’s how the bag works: You place a special radio-signal-transmitting chip on to your wallet. A similar radio in your purse picks up the signal and notifies you that you’ve forgotten to take your wallet. In turn, sensors on your purse’s handles will notify the computer that you’ve picked up the purse and are ready to go.

Already, these new kinds of wearable devices are being adopted for use in markets like auto repair, emergency services, medical monitoring—and even, increasingly, for consumers at large. Indeed, more people will want to cross that bridge in the coming years--- making for a booming market for wearable computers that don’t like something out of science fiction.

1.Which of the following describes a wearable computer?

A. It can be washed in a washing machine.     B. It is much heavier than a leather purse.

C. It can download songs from the Internet.    D. It is made of clothes conducting electricity.

2.According to the passage, these new wearable computers ______.

A. require users to operate on the stomach

B. pick up the signals through wires and chip

C. are being applied in some different areas now

D. are smarter but more expensive than the old ones

3.What does the underlined sentence in the last paragraph mean?

A. These new wearable computers have become fashionable.

B. People would like to learn more about these new computers.

C. These new wearable computers promise to sell well in the future.

D. The idea of these purse-like computers comes from science fiction.

4.The purpose of the passage is ______.

A. to introduce a new kind of computer           B. to explain the function of computers

C. to compare different types of computers   D. to show how high technology affects our life

My family and I lived across the street from Southway Park since I was four years old. Then just last year the city put a chain link fence around the park and started bulldozing(用推土機(jī)推平)the trees and grass to make way for a new apartment complex. When I saw the fence and bulldozers, I asked myself,“Why don't they just leave it alone?”

Looking back, I think what sentenced the park to oblivion(被遺忘)was the drought(旱災(zāi))we had about four years ago. Up until then, Southway Park was a nice green park with plenty of trees and a public swimming pool. My friends and I rollerskated on the sidewalks, climbed the trees, and swam in the pool all the years I was growing up. The park was almost like my own yard. Then the summer I was fifteen the drought came and things changed.

There had been almost no rain at all that year. The city stopped watering the park grass. Within a few weeks I found myself living across the street from a huge brown desert. Leaves fell off the park trees, and pretty soon the trees started dying, too. Next, the park swimming pool was closed. The city cut down on the work force that kept the park, and pretty soon it just got too ugly and dirty to enjoy anymore.

As the drought lasted into the fall, the park got worse every month. The rubbish piled up or blew across the brown grass. Soon the only people in the park were beggars and other people down on their luck. People said drugs were being sold or traded there now. The park had gotten scary, and my mother told us kids not to go there anymore.

The drought finally ended and things seemed to get back to normal, that is, everything but the park. It had gotten into such bad shape that the city just let it stay that way. Then about six months ago I heard that the city was going to“redevelop”certain wornout areas of the city. It turned out that the city had planned to get rid of the park, sell the land and let someone build rows of apartment buildings on it.

The chainlink fencing and the bulldozers did their work. Now we live across the street from six rows of apartment buildings. Each of them is three units high and stretches a block in each direction. The neighborhood has changed without the park. The streets I used to play in are jammed with cars now. Things will never be the same again. Sometimes_I_wonder,_though,_what_changes_another_drought_would_make_in_the_way_things_are_today.

1.How did the writer feel when he saw the fence and bulldozers?

A.Scared.

B.Confused.

C.upset.

D.Curious.

2.Why was the writer told not to go to the park by his mother?

A.It was being rebuilt.

B.It was dangerous.

C.It became crowded.

D.It had turned into a desert.

3.According to the writer, what eventually brought about the disappearance of the park?

A.The drought.

B.The crime.

C.The beggars and the rubbish.

D.The decisions of the city.

4.The last sentence of the passage implies that if another drought came,________.

A.the situation would be much worse

B.people would have to desert their homes

C.the city would be fully prepared in advance

D.the city would have to redevelop the neighborhood
