It is six o’clock in the morning. You are asleep in my left arm and I am learning the art of one-handed typing. Your mother, more tired yet more happy than I’ve ever known her, is sound asleep in the room next door.
When you’re older we’ll tell you that you were born in Hong Kong in the lunar year of the pig. “It's a boy, so lucky,” our neighbours told us. They said you were the first baby to be born in the block this year. This, they told us, was good Feng Shui, in other words, a positive sign. Naturally your mother and I were only too happy to believe that.
Your coming has turned me upside down and inside out. I am pained by the memory of each suffering child I have come across on my journeys as a journalist. To tell you the truth, it’s nearly too much for me to even think of the children being hurt and abused and killed.
Last October, in Afghanistan, when you were growing inside your mother, I met Sharja, aged twelve, motherless, fatherless, guiding me through the grey ruins of her home. Everything was gone, she told me.
There is another memory of Rwanda, and the churchyard where I found a mother and her three young children huddled(蜷縮) together where they’d been beaten to death. The children had died holding on to their mother.
Daniel, these memories explain some of the protectiveness I feel for you, and the occasional moments of blind terror when I imagine anything bad happening to you.

Much attention has been given in the media to the so-called information superhighway which is supposed to use computer and telecommunications technology to completely change the way Americans will be doing business and receiving information and entertainment at home in the future. There have been countless newspaper and magazine articles about it, television and radio discussions, meetings and conferences. However, according to a public opinion poll(民意測驗(yàn)), most Americans would say they never heard of it.

The people who conducted the poll didn't actually talk to most Americans, of course, but they did talk to 1, 255 people, and they say the result has a margin of error of plus or minus three percentage points. But even if it's off by three percentage points, it's still surprising. Two-thirds of Americans don't remember having heard of the information superhighway. And even among the 34 percent who have heard of it, most say that they have little understanding of what it is. But even though most of those who've heard of it don't know what it is, six out of ten of them say that they're for it.

It seems very unusual that people can admit that they don't know what something is and yet say they're for it, or against it, for that matter. It generally works out better when you find out what something is first and then decide whether you like it or not, rather than this business of liking something before finding out what it is. This is the way they judge everything these days. They are entitled to have an opinion about everything whether they know anything about it or not.

Unfortunately, the way political leadership works today, the so-called leaders read the polls to find out what the people want and here's a poll telling us that the people are ready to say what they want without knowing the first thing about it. This is the blind leading the blind. No wonder things are the way they are.

A four-year study done by the Infant(幼兒)Testing Center in San Francisco,California, suggests that babies feel more comfortable around other babies than with strange adults.According to the study, babies benefit by being with their fellow infants daily. While on the other hand,a baby might show fear of an adult stranger,he is likely to smile and reach out for an unfamiliar infant.By the time babies are one year old, they have begun to form friendships of a sort.

The above findings, based on observation(觀察)of 100 babies aged three months to three years, might prove interesting to working parents who must find day care for their babies.Family care in a private home, with several babies together,is probably the ideal way to care for babies under three.Dr Benjamin Spocks, well?known pediatrician(兒科醫(yī)生) and author of books about babies, supports the idea.He says that family day care is sounder(有理由的) in theory than hiring a housekeeper or a babysitter.
