One of my fondest memories as a child is going by the river and sitting idly on the bank. There I would   16  the peace and quiet, watch the water rush   17  and listen to the singing of birds and the rustling of   18  in the trees. I would also watch the bamboo trees   19  under pressure from the wind and watch them   20  gracefully to their original position after the wind had   21  .
When I think about the bamboo tree's ability to bounce back to its original position, the word "resilience" comes to mind. When used in   22  to a person this word means the ability to readily   23  from shock, depression or any other situation that stretches the limits of a person's   24  .
Have you ever felt like you are at your   25  point? Thankfully, you have survived the experience to live to talk about it.
During the   26  you probably felt a mix of emotions that threatened your health. You felt emotionally drained,   27  exhausted and you most likely stood   28   physical symptoms.
Life is a   29  of good times and bad times, happy moments and unhappy moments. The next time you are experiencing one of those bad times or unhappy   30   that take you close to your breaking point, bend,   31   don't break. Try your best not to let the situation get the best of you.
A   32  of hope will take you through the unpleasant ordeal (考驗). With   33   for a better tomorrow or a better situation, things may not be as bad as they seem to be. The unpleasant ordeal may be easier to   34  if the final result is worth having.
If life gets   35  and you are at your breaking point, show resilience. Like the bamboo tree, bend, but don't break!

The Price of a Dream
I grew up poor, living with my wonderful mother. We had little money but plenty of love and attention.  I was   36  and energetic. I understood that no matter how poor a person was, he could still   37  a dream.
My dream was to be a sportsman.   38  I was sixteen, I had started playing baseball. I could throw a ninety-mile-per-hour fastball and hit anything that moved on the football field.  I was also   39 . My high-school coach was Ollie Jarvis, who not only believed in me, but taught me  40 to believe in myself. He   41 me the difference between having a dream and realizing the dream. One particular   42  with Coach Jarvis changed my life forever.
It was the summer between my junior and senior years, and a friend recommended (推薦) me for a summer job. This meant a chance for money in my pocket—money for a new bike and new clothes, and the   43  of savings for a house for my mother. Then I realized I would have to   44  summer baseball to deal with the work schedule, and that meant I would have to tell Coach Jarvis I wouldn’t be playing.
When I told Coach Jarvis, he was as   45  as I expected him to be.  “You have your whole life to work,” he said.  “Your playing days are limited. You can’t   46  to waste them.” I stood before him with my head hanging, trying to think of the   47  that would explain   48  him why my dream of buying my mom a house and having money in my pocket was worth facing his   49  in me.
“How much are you going to make at this job, son?” he asked. “Three twenty-five an hour,” I replied.
“Well,” he asked, “is $3.25 an hour the   50  of a dream?”
That simple question made it   51  to me the difference between   52  something right now and following a dream. I   53  myself to sports that summer, and within the year I was   54  by the Pittsburgh Pirates to play baseball, and was   55  a $20,000 contract. In 2000, I bought my mother the house of my dream!

Many years ago I drove a taxi for extra money mainly from the downtown to the 36 , beside the Greenwood Racetrack..
Each time a taxi drove up to the station, many kids would run along the   37  . One   38   kid would open the passenger door and say, “  39  , sir.” The passenger would always say thanks and give the kid a   40  . It was a routine that everybody knew.
One day I noticed a boy, who was   41   than most of them but was pushed away by even the smallest kid. He never pushed back.   42  , he would even step aside when others pushed forward. But he never   43  .
Then as I was   44   to the sidewalk, all the other kids were running after a taxi   45  mine. They didn’t notice mine.
The boy saw me and walked toward my taxi. As I pulled up I made sure that I stopped in a 46  with the passenger door right beside him. He   47  the passenger door and said, “Good luck at the track, sir.”
48 , the man did not tip him a quarter. Instead he   49 , “Get out of my way!” He pushed him aside so   50  that the boy fell down and was badly hurt. I got out of my car quickly,   51  find that the man disappeared in the crowd.
So I looked for the kid. I decided to give him $20 for all his   52 . But he was far up ahead, walking out of the station   53 .   54 , I never saw him again. I’d like to find him and tell him that if only he had stuck around a little longer I would have given him a whole $20.
I learned an important lesson from the boy. When things seem so   55  that you are ready to give up, that is the time when things are most likely to turn around for you.

Dash of Hope
"Dash" is a symbol which represents every day we've spent alive on earth. Therefore, how you spend your "dash" is important.
Recently I   36  about a little girl named Hope. After learning more about her life, I couldn't help but feel it was not by   37  , nor happenstance(意外事件), that she had been named "Hope". The strong feeling of sympathy and generosity  38  in her young heart made a lasting impression on me and countless others.  39   I never had the opportunity to meet her, I wish I had. It seems as though she was wise beyond her tender years and very, very special.
Hope was a twelve-year-old girl who was   40  a "wish" in early December 2010 by the "Make-A-Wish" Foundation after being   41  that she had a rare type of bone cancer. At the gathering to celebrate her life, "A Celebration of Hope" on January 16, 2011 , the   55  was made that they had indeed received donations totaling more than one million dollars. One day a student went to see his teacher. He had been given an important position and now was coming to say goodbye to his teacher. The old man asked him how he would live among high officials. The student answered, “ I will be all right. I have prepared a hundred high hats, one for each official I will meet. I am sure I will succeed.” The teacher got angry on hearing this.  “What?” he cried. “Is this what ten years of my teaching has made of you? Nothing but flatterer(拍馬屁的人)?” “Excuse me, honored(尊敬的) master,” the student  rose to his feet and apologized hurriedly. “But you have always been absorbed in(沉浸于) your studies and don’t know how vulgar(庸俗的) the world has come to be.
