Like any good mother, when Karen found out that another baby was on the way, she did what she could to help her three-year-old son, Michael, prepare for a new sibling. They find out that the new baby is going to be a girl, and day after day, night after night, Michael sings to his sister in Mommy's tummy.

The pregnancy progresses normally for Karen. But complications arise during delivery. Finally, Michael's little sister is born. But she is in serious condition. With siren howling in the night, the ambulance rushes the infant to the intensive care unit at St. Mary's Hospital.

The little girl gets worse. The doctor tells the parents, "There is very little hope. Be prepared for the worst." Karen and her husband have fixed up a special room in their home for the new baby — now they plan a funeral.

Michael, keeps begging his parents to let him see his sister, "I want to sing to her," he says. But kids are never allowed in Intensive Care. However, Karen makes up her mind. She will take Michael whether they like it or not.  “If he doesn't see his sister now, he may never see her alive.” She dresses him in an oversized scrub suit and marches him into ICU. The head nurse recognizes him as a child and bellows, "Get that kid out of here now! " The mother, the usually mild-mannered lady glares steel-eyed into the head nurse's face, her lips a firm line. "He is not leaving until he sings to his sister!" Karen tows Michael to his sister's bedside. He gazes at the tiny infant losing the battle to live. And he begins to sing.

"You are my sunshine, my only sunshine, you make me happy when skies are gray”

Instantly the baby girl responds. The pulse rate becomes calm and steady.

"You never know, dear, how much I love you. Please don't take my sunshine away "

The ragged, strained breathing becomes as smooth as a kitten's purr.

Keep on singing, Michael. Tears conquer the face of the bossy head nurse as well as Karen.

Funeral plans are scrapped. The next, day — the very next day — the little girl is well enough to go home!

Some people call her innovative, others say she’s simply a copycat--- a Chinese version of US singer Lady Gaga---or just an attention seeker who tries too hard. But whatever labels fans and critics pin on her, Shang Wenjie, whose English name is Laure, keeps herself cool.

As she sings in her song The way I am: “Whether you like it or not, it has nothing to do with me.”

Shang, 30, first rose to fame in 2006 as the champion of Hunan TV’s talent contest Supergirls. However, she didn’t enjoy much popularity until she changed her girl-next–door image into a more shocking style four years later.

While her fashion taste caught public attention, criticism came just as quickly, with many saying her rebellious look was only meant to get more media exposure.

“My styling goes with the music,” Shang told Yancheng Evening News. “I don’t need to be known as the Chinese Lady Gaga. I just want to be known as Laure Shang.”

She’s recently made that a reality thanks to I’m a Singer, another talent show produced by Hunan TV, which gathers famous singers to compete and an audience of 500 to decide who goes to the next round,

The show gave Shang an opportunity to display her musical abilities. She tried out a wide range of styles including pop, hip-hop, rock’n’roll, punk and electro. The highlights of her time on the show were when she chose tunes which are lesser-known than other contestants’ choices. For example, she sang her own versions of American pop star Michael Jackson’s Man in the “Shang has shown an international flavor which is just as inspiring as her fashion sense,” commented Sina.com. “She has become a trail blazer on the Mandopop scene, creating a music style bearing her own mark.”

Shang was eliminated (淘汰) on March 8, but “thanks to the show, her popularity has grown rapidly,” People’s Daily wrote.

“I love Shang, the youngest singer on the show,” said 16-year-old Guo Chen, a Senior 1 student from Daqing Shiyan High School in Heilongjiang. “Shang is quite international. She not only introduces European and US fashion, but also creatively combines Western music with Mandopop.”

Shang owes her international style to her educational background. She graduated from Fudan University as a French major. “The advantage of learning foreign languages is intangible. For example, it helps me communicate well with foreign musicians and broaden my horizons of music styles,” she said.

Michael Lewis writes about the inner strategies of sports to fans’ delight, and yet describes the personalities and worlds of his real-life characters with such depth that nonfans will enjoy his writing just as much. He looked successfully at baseball management with Moneyball.  Now The Blind Side examines the increasing value placed on the left tackle(左后衛(wèi))position in football, the high pressure world of college football recruiting(招收隊(duì)員), and in particular, the life of one promising young left tackle, Mike Oher.

Oher’s story’s attractive. The big boy was silent to the point that many people thought he was mentally disabled. Then, in a lucky break, Oher and a friend are admitted to a very white, private high school, far across town from their own poor African-American neighborhood. Oher is unbelievably far behind academically, but he’s taken under the wing of Sean Tuohy, one of the school’s coaches, a wealthy man whose family Oher eventually joins. Before long, though Oher almost completely lacks football experience, he leads him to new athletic heights and brings on a fierce competition from eager college coaches.

Lewis’s book brings on many interesting questions: How did a kid like Oher get so lost in the college recruiting system at first? How far should the system bend to meet the needs of a few student athletes? Are the Tuohys the most selfless, or are they using Oher themselves? If so, does it matter, if it benefits him? And what should we think of the college recruiting system that comes after him? These are just a few subjects raised by this highly readable book.

No fan of football should pass on this good one, but even if your interest in sports is only mild, consider tracking down the works of Michael Lewis.

A. explore deep meanings of the book              B. tell how hard it is to understand the story

C. question the poor quality of the book                    D. show what a hot topic the book becomes
