It’s been a difficult year. My daughter, my dog and I lost our home. We’ve depended upon the kindness of others to provide temporary shelter.
1. At one point, I felt as though my daughter might be better off without me. If she were placed with a rich family, she would have a good life. I was unable to provide a good life for her. However, she never complains, although she has every right to. She went from having a beautifully decorated bedroom of her own, to having temporary shelter. 2.
I dug through the change at the bottom of my purse and bought her a lollipop at the store today. She’d had her eye on it the entire time we were in line to pay for our purchase. It was an old-fashioned one that cost $1.00.3. It was the end of the month and I only had $1.35 left to my name. However, she’d been such a good girl, and I really thought she deserved a special treat.
I reached into my purse and counted out enough for the lollipop. You would have thought I gave her the key to the magic kingdom! “Thank you, Mommy! You’re the best mommy!”4.
All at once, the cloud of despair that had hung over me lifted.5. I was ready to continue my journey, willing to face whatever challenges may lie ahead.
A.I really couldn’t afford it.
B.I became upset at my loss.
C.I could see tears shining in her eyes.
D.I wouldn’t have any money coming until the first of next month.
E.She screamed with joy as she hugged me with all her strength.
F.I knew without a doubt in that very instant that I was the family that my little girl needed.
G.She doesn’t complain that I can’t afford to give her the extra things she would love to have.

Droughts in California
A terrible drought has created trouble in California, USA. A drought is a long period of time with little rain or snow. That means there isn’t enough water. Droughts are natural disasters. But unlike earthquakes or hurricanes(颶風(fēng)), droughts do not happen suddenly.1.
The drought in the western United States began four years ago. California has been hit hardest. About 95% of the state now has serious drought conditions. About 3,500 people in East Porterville, California, have no running water in their homes. 2. Some people haven’t had running water for years. Rivers and lakes have been drying up, too. That’s a problem for fish and animals. 3. As a result, farms might lose more than $2 billion in 2015. More than 18,000 farm jobs have been lost.
Scientists aren’t sure when the problem will end. A rainy autumn and winter could help. Experts say it will take 11 trillion gallons(加侖) of water to end the drought. 4. They take the water home for washing dishes, cleaning toilets, and more. 5. They’ve stopped watering lawns(草坪) and washing cars. “We need to make the best use of what we have,” explains weather scientist Michael Anderson.
A. Instead, they happen slowly.
B. Without water, farms can’t grow as much food.
C. Future droughts in California are likely to last longer.
D. That’s because the drought has caused their wells to dry up.
E. All across California, people are saving water any way they can.
F. California is a state located on the West Coast of the United States.
G. Many people drive to fire stations to fetch water.

根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容,從短文后的七個選項中選出正確的填入空白處。選項中有兩項為多余選項。
Urbanization
Until relatively recently, the vast majority of human beings lived and died without ever seeing a city. The first city was probably founded no more than 5,500 years ago. 1. In fact, nearly everyone lived on farms or in tiny rural villages. It was not until the 20th century that Great Britain became the first urban society in history—a society in which the majority of people live in cities and do not farm for a living.
Britain was only the beginning. 2. The process of urbanization—the migration of people from the countryside to the city—was the result of modernization, which has rapidly transformed how people live and where they live.
In 1990, fewer than 40% of Americans lived in urban areas. Today, over 82% of Americans live in cities.
Only about 2% live on farms. 3.
Large cities were impossible until agriculture became industrialized. Even in advanced agricultural societies, it took about ninety-five people on farms to feed five people in cities. 4. Until modern times, those living in cities were mainly the ruling elite(精英) and the servants, laborers and professionals who served them. Cities survived by taxing farmers and were limited in size by the amount of surplus food that the rural population produced and by the ability to move this surplus from farm to city.
Over the past two centuries, the Industrial Revolution has broken this balance between the city and the country. 5. Today, instead of needing ninety-five farmers to feed five city people, one American farmer is able to feed more than a hundred non-farmers.
A. That kept cities very small.
B. The rest live in small towns.
C. The effects of urban living on people should be considered.
D. Soon many other industrial nations become urban societies.
E. But even 200 years ago, only a few people could live in cities.
F. Modernization drew people to the cities and made farmers more productive.
G. Modern cities have destroyed social relations and the health of human beings.
