Rain and cold weather this summer saw honey yields from hives(巢)fall by almost three-quarters, the British Beekeepers Association(BBKA)said today. The average crop per hive was down 72% compared to last year, with just 3.6kg (81b) of honey produced compared to an annual average, the annual honey survey by the BBKA revealed.

The survey of 2,712 beekeepers in England, Northern Ireland and Wales found that 88% said this summer’s bad weather caused the descent in honey yields. The bad weather made it difficult for bees to excrete(排泄),which led to disease easily, and the bad weather also increased the risk of keeping bees for heavy rain caused the places which bees regularly visited to meet natural disasters. The bad weather also influenced the plants flowering which increased the cost of keeping bees. The BBKA issued a midsummer warning to feed bees if necessary to avoid dying from hunger. But in London, which recorded the worst results with just 2.5kg (5.61b)of honey harvested on average, beekeeping experts said that in addition to the bad weather there was a lack of food for bees in the city.

Angela Woods, secretary of the London Beekeepers Association, said, “Rather than putting beehives on office roofs, we encourage companies in London that want to help to look at different ways of supporting bees and beekeepers. We need more food for the bees and better-educated beekeepers.”

Elsewhere, the weather was the main problem. Peter Hutton, a beekeeper in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, said, “It has been the most difficult year I have known in my 53 years of beekeeping. Bad weather in spring prevented bees in many areas from collecting nectar(花蜜)from early-flowering crops such as oilseed rape(油菜),and the rain continued in many places throughout June and July, preventing honeybees from searching for food on later crops.”

The BBKA warned that as well as reducing the honey harvest, the bad weather is likely to have a longer-term influence as it will have affected the normal process of breeding for the queens, which mate(交配)on the wing on fine, still summer days. As a result they may have mated poorly and be unable to produce enough new babies to see groups through the winter.

How to live life to the fullest

“Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re going to get.” But for those who take critical decisions, life can be different. How true that is! Stare life in the face as you experience it like a roller coaster ride. 1.Life is made up of choices and decision-making is critical as each choice has both consequences and benefits. Please weigh the latter and always choose life. Always ask what you can learn and how you can move forward, and stop yourself from blaming other people if things aren’t the way you would like them to be.

Seize the day. 2.Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery but today is a gift—that’s why it’s called the present. Life presents us with a lifetime of opportunities, but the opportunities of a lifetime are got when right choices are followed. Be present to enjoy the moment. Each day is a fresh start with choices just waiting to be explored, so what are you waiting for?

3.This is a great way to live life. It means accepting your present the way it is, and offering no resistance to it. However, it does not mean not trying to change it. It means being truly yourself, accepting the present around you, then trying to change it. Often ask yourself: “Has my resistance helped me in any way?” Remember: “Life goes on.”

Accept yourself. Don’t judge yourself. This is the very first step you must take if you really want to live life to the fullest. Why? Because if you’re judging yourself or thinking part of you is wrong, you’ll limit yourself.4.

5.No matter what the situation you find yourself in ,always be focused on what you can be learning from it, how you can be growing, and what you can be taking away from it ,so that you can respond to similar situations more effectively in the future.

A. Always be learning.

B. Fully accept the present.

C. Go on enjoying your life.

D. Show a positive attitude.

E. Live each day as if it’s your last day.

F. And if you limit yourself, you can’t live life to the fullest.

G. The meaning of your life is something you create day after day with your own actions and thoughts.

科目:高中英語(yǔ) 來(lái)源:2016屆四川雙流中學(xué)高三2月月考英語(yǔ)試卷(解析版) 題型:閱讀理解

Look carefully and you’ll find musicians at the top of almost any industry. The television broadcaster Paula Zahn(cello) and the NBC chief White House correspondent Chuck Todd (French horn) attended college on music scholarships; Both Microsoft’s Mr. Allen and the venture capitalist Rogar McNamee have rock bands. Lorry Page, a co-founder of Google, played saxophone in high school. The former World Bank president James D. Wolfensohn has played cello at Carnegie Hall.

The connection isn’t a coincidence. I know because I asked. I put the question to top-flight professionals in industries from tech to finance to media, all of whom had serious ( if often little-known) past lives as musicians. Almost all made a connection between their music training and their professional achievements.

Will your school music program turn your kid into a Paul Allen, the billionaire co-founder of Microsoft (guitar)? Or a Woody Allen (clarinet )? Probably not. These are outstanding achievers. But the way these and other visionaries (有遠(yuǎn)見(jiàn)的人) I spoke to process music is interesting.

But the key question is: why does that connection exist? Paul Allen offers an answer. He says music “establish your confidence in the ability to create.” He began playing the violin at age 7 and switched to the guitar as a teenager. Even in the early days of Microsoft, he would pick up his guitar at the end of marathon days of programming. The music was the emotional analog (類比) to his day job, both of them show his different creativity. He says, “something is pushing you to look beyond what currently exists and express yourself in a new way.”

For many of the high achievers I spoke with, music functions as a “hidden language,” as Mr. Wolfensohn calls it, one that enhances the ability to connect different or even opposite ideas. When he ran the World Band, Mr. Wolfensohn traveled to more than 100 countries, often taking in local performances (and occasionally joining in on a borrowed cello), which helped him understand “the culture of people”.

Consider the qualities these high achievers say music has sharpened : cooperation, creativity, discipline and the capacity to coordinate (協(xié)調(diào)) conflicting ideas. All are qualities obviously absent from public life. Music may not make you a genius, or rich, or even a better person. But it helps train you to think differently, to process different points of views --- and most important, to take pleasure in listening.

1.The reason why the author quote so many outstanding people as examples in the first paragraph is ___________.

A. to prove the popularity and the charm of music

B. to prove all winners are musicians before

C. to encourage kids to choose school music program

D. to prove the connection between success and music

2.Which of the following is true?

A. Everybody knows those well-known people are musicians before.

B. Musicians exist in all industries.

C. Music can certainly make you become a better person.

D.Music helps Mr. Wolfensohn have a better understanding of the different culture.

3.The author develops the passage mainly _________.

A. by classification B. by comparison

C. by example D. by process

I am a Senior 3 student. I often quarrel with my mother over if I can watch TV after school. My mother holds the view that students in Senior 3, heavily burden with their studies, are so busy to spare any time to watch TV. It seemed to her that once I am allowed to do that I will not able to control myself and forget all about my study. She also thinks that it is bad for her eyes to watch TV too often. But I really can’t accept her ideas. I think it is relaxed to watch TV before a day’s hard work. Not only can it set my mind at rest, but it can broaden my horizons. In addition, and we can be kept well informed of what’s happening at home and abroad and keep up with the times.

Now we have at last reached an agreement that I can only watch TV at weekends, and the content is limited to news and program of entertainment, sports or science.
