Kids will often ignore your requests for them to shut off the TV,start their chores(雜事),or do their homework as a way to avoid following your directions. Before you know it,you’ve started to sound like a broken record as you repeatedly ask them to do their assignments, clean their rooms,or take out the trash.Rather than saying “Do your chores now.” you’ll be more effective if you set a target time for when the chores have to be completed. So instead of arguing about starting chores, just say,“If chores aren’t done by 4 pm,here are the consequences.”Then it’s up to your child to complete the chores.Put the ball back in their court.Don’t argue or fight with them, just say,“That’s the way it’s going to be.”It shouldn’t be punitive(懲罰性的)as much as it should be persuasive.“If your chores aren’t done by 4 pm,then no video game time until chores are done. And if finishing those chores runs into homework time, that’s going to be your loss.”O(jiān)n the other hand, when dealing with homework, keep it very simple.Have a time when homework starts, and at that time, all electronics go off and do not go back on until you see that their homework is done.If your kids say they have no homework, then they should use that time to study or read.Either way, there should be a time set aside when the electronics are off.

When a kid wears his iPod or headphones when you’re trying to talk to him, make no bones about it;he is not ignoring you,he is disrespecting you.At that point, everything else should stop until he takes the earplugs out of his ears.Don’t try to communicate with him when he’s wearing headphones—even if he tells you he can hear you.Wearing them while you’re talking to him is a sign of disrespect.Parents should be very tough about this kind of thing.Remember, mutual respect becomes more important as children mature.

In a consumer-driven society that broadcasts values that don't reflect what you believe, how can fathers teach values to their kids? Here are ten ideas to help you:

Tell them your life stories and teach through your stories

Kids love to hear stories about your childhood.Weave in some moral dilemmas and you’ve

got great opportunities to teach values to them.It certainly beats lecturing your kids!

Live your own life according to your values-walk the talk

Kids learn by imitating(模仿), especially at a young age. They are very good at seeing if

what you say and what you do are matching up.Don't give them confusing signals; follow your own values every moment.

Expose them to your religion or faith

It seems especially important today to let them know that they’re not alone.Providing your

kids with a community of faith will strengthen their values.

Pay attention to who else might be teaching values to your kids

Get to know your child's teachers, coaches, relatives, etc.Anyone who spends time with

your kids may be influencing them.Know their values and beliefs as well.

Ask your kids questions that will stimulate dialogue about values

Telling them what values they should have won't always be effective, especially when your kids get older.Asking them “curious” questions will allow discussions that will eventually lead to values.“What did you think about that fight, ” may be more effective than, “He shouldn't have started that fight! ”

Talk to them about values in a relaxed and easy way

Nothing will turn your kids off more than teaching values to them after they’ve made a bad mistake! Talk to them when everyone's relaxed, and do it in a light, conversational manner. They'll be much more likely to be listening rather than tuning you out.

Read them fairy tales when they’re younger

Fairy tales arouse kids’ imagination and can easily lead to a discussion of values.Kids will learn the most concerning values when they’re excited about the topic.

Involve your kids in art, activities, or helping others while limiting TV and video games

Kids learn values when they experience them.Allow them to experience helping others and involve them in activities that will expand their creativity.

Have frequent conversations about values in your household

This lets your kids know that it's important and it's not just something you talk about when they do something wrong.

Have high expectations for your kids’ value systems

Kids will tend to rise to the level of expectation you have for them.Their value system will often reflect yours if the expectations are high.

More surprising, perhaps, than the current difficulties of traditional marriage is the fact that marriage itself is alive and thriving(旺盛的). As Skolnich notes, Americans are a marrying people: relative to Europeans, more of us marry and we marry at a younger age. Moreover, after a decline(衰退)in the early 1970s, the rate of marriage in the United States is now increasing. Even the divorce(離婚)rate needs to be taken in this pro- marriage context: some 80 percent of divorced individuals remarry. Thus, marriage remains by far the preferred way of life for the vast majority of the people in our society.

What has changed more than marriage is the nuclear family. Twenty- five years ago, the typical American family consisted of the husband, the wife, and two or three children. Now, there are many marriages in which couples have decided not to have any children, and there are many marriages where at least some of the children are from the wife’s previous marriage, or the husband’s, or both. Sometimes these children spend all of their time with one parent from the former marriage; sometimes they are shared between the two former spouses (配偶).

Thus, one can find every type of tamely arrangement. There are marriages without children; marriages with children from only the present marriages; marriages with “full - time” children from both the present and former marriages; marriages with“full- time”children from the present marriage and“ part- time”children from former marriages. There are stepfathers, stepmothers, half- brothers and half - sisters. It is not all that unusual for a child to have four parents and eight grandparents! These are enormous changes from the traditional nuclear family. But even so, even in the midst of all this, there remains one constant: most Americans spend most of their adult lives married.

By calling Americans a marrying people the writer means that ________.

  A. Americans are more traditional than Europeans

  B. Americans expect more out of marriage than Europeans

  C. there are more married couples in the USA than in Europe

  D. more of Americans, as compared with Europeans, prefer marriage and they accept it at a younger age

Divorced Americans ________ .

  A. prefer the way they live

  B. will most likely remarry

  C. have lost interest in marriage

  D. are the majority of people in the society

Which of the following can be presented as the picture of today’s American families?

  A. Which types of family arrangements have become socially acceptable.

  B. A typical American family consists of only a husband and a wife.

  C. Americans prefer to have more kids than before.

  D. There are no nuclear families any more.

Fear can be fun. Many young people queue up to ride very fast and scary roller coasters, screaming but enjoying themselves. Other people like to read “goose bumps (雞皮疙瘩)” books or watch horror movies at night, scared to death but feeling excited. Why do people like being scared?

Fear is an ancient way of surviving. Being scared makes animals, including humans escape from danger and save themselves. It is because of fear that we have lived through millions of years of evolution. Those who lacked a strong fear response were more likely to be killed, leaving the more fearful and careful to pass their genes onto the next generation.

How do scientists explain why shaking over such scary things is fun? “Some kids will go to a scary movie and love it and laugh over it, others will feel anxious and hide their faces and some won’t even set foot in the cinema,” said Ned Kalin, a US scientist. “Which kind of person you are depends partly on experiences you’ve had and partly on your genes.”

What happens in the brain when something frightens you? Nerves that begin at the eyes and ears lead to a part of the brain called the amygdale. When you suddenly see a snake, for example, the amygdale makes you freeze, sweat, have a quickened heartbeat, or run very fast. However, seeing the snake also uses another part of the brain, the cortex. It analyzes the situation, and if it finds that the snake is only made of rubber it tells your heart and the rest of your body to calm down. Think of the amygdale as the engine and the cortex as the brake.

Back to the first question: Why do some people like to make themselves scared? “One reason is that we can play games with fear, find ways to reduce the scariness by looking away or thinking of something else,” Kalin said. “To believe we have control over a situation gives us a feeling of power.” “Scary movies or novels are good practice to prepare young people for the real thing. Thrills such as roller coaster rides also go to the brain’s pleasure centre.”

And there might be some evolutionary advantage to being able to adjust this system that is there to protect people.

  D. they will feel powerful after getting rid of fear

  74. Which of the following is true about the people who are not easily scared?

  A. Their cortex is better at analyzing the situations.

  B. They are more likely to suffer from potential danger.
