Online Friends and Love
In so many ways, cyberspace mirrors the real world.   1  . Others buy and sell products. Still others look for friendship, or even love. Unlike the real world, however, your knowledge about a person is limited to words on a computer screen. Identity (身份) and appearance mean very little in cyberspace.      2   . So even the shyest person can become a chat-room star. Usually, this “faceless” communication doesn’t create problems. Identity doesn’t really matter when you’re in a chat room discussing politics or hobbies and it makes the Internet a great place for exciting conversation. Where else can so many people come together to chat about their interests?   3   . They’re looking for serious love relationships. Is cyberspace a good place to find love? That answer depends on whom you ask. Some of these relationships actually succeed. Others fail miserably.
Supporter of online relationships claim that the Internet allows couples to get to know each other. Personal appearance doesn’t get in the way. But critics of online relationships argue that no one can truly know another person in cyberspace. Why?   4   . Internet users can carefully make their words fit whatever image they want to give. In a sense, they’re not really themselves. All of this may be fine if the relationship stays in cyberspace.   5   . With so many unknowns, it’s easy to let one’s imagination “fill in the blanks”. This leads to disappointment when couples meet in person. So, before looking for love in cyberspace, remember the advice of Internet pioneer Clifford Stoll: “Life in the real world is far richer than anything you’ll find on a computer screen.”

A.When we talk with others on the line, we can express ourselves freely.

B.But some Internet users want more than just someone to chat with.

C.People ask for information, play games and share hobby tips.

D.Generally speaking, online friends and love are worth seeking for.

E.Because the Internet gives users a lot of control over how others view them.
F.Rather, a person’s thoughts or at least the thoughts they type— are what really count.
G.But not knowing a person is a big problem in a love relationship.

Teen peer pressure
Teen peer pressure is the influence a teen's social group has on him or her. As adolescents enter the teen years, they usually begin to focus more on their peers or friends.   【小題1】 Peers influence most aspects of a teen's life, including how teens dress, what music they listen to, and what kind of activities they are involved in.
【小題2】 Good friends can encourage teens to do well in school, get involved in positive activities, volunteer, eat healthy foods, and avoid drugs, alcohol, and other risky activities. Friends also help teens learn good social skills and better ways to communicate and work out problems. 【小題3】
Negative peer pressure is when teens feel pressured to do something they know is wrong, such as smoking, drinking, stealing, or cutting class. 【小題4】  This is because they want to be liked or fit in, they are afraid of being made fun of, or they want to try something other teens are doing.
It is important for teens to learn how to deal with peer pressure. There are a lot of things a teen can do to handle it. 【小題5】 Good friends use positive peer pressure to help you be your best self.  Also you need to think about the consequences of your decisions and actions, such as if an activity might harm your health or get you into trouble.  Or you can talk to your parents or a trusted adult about the kinds of peer pressure you face and listen to their advice. Remember that if just one teen stands up against negative peer pressure, usually others will join him or her, and learning to handle peer pressure gives teens more confidence.

A.Peer pressure is not always bad.
B.They always give teens good advice.
C.Teens may give in to negative peer pressure.
D.Why it is important to deal with negative peer pressure?
E. First of all, teens need to recognize negative peer pressure.
F. For example, you can choose good friends who share your values.
G. The desire to fit in with peers can be a very strong influence on teens.

Rock Climbing as Sport and Art
An estimated nine million people rock climb in the United States. Millions more take part in the activity around the world.   【小題1】 Others compete. Rock climbing can be dangerous. But there are many methods and protective devices that can increase a climber’s safety.
【小題2】   Climbers have to pull themselves straight up the face of very high rocks or walls. So they have to be strong enough to carry their own weight. And climbers sometimes have to hold on to rocks with only their fingers or toes.
There are several kinds of rock climbing. Traditional rock climbing is done outside. Climbers wear ropes and attach devices to the rocks as they climb many hundreds of meters up. They also connect their ropes to the devices.   【小題3】  Sport climbing is similar. However, in those cases the protective devices are permanently placed in the rock. There is also indoor climbing. Rock walls made of wood or concrete have places for the climber’s hands and feet.
【小題4】  People climb glaciers or frozen waterfalls instead of rocks. They use special equipment for the ice.
And then there is bouldering(巨石攀巖)— climbing rocks between three and seven meters high.   【小題5】  Many climbers like bouldering because they can use less equipment. Climbers often need only special shoes and chalk. All climbers use chalk to keep their hands dry.

A.Ice climbing is exactly as it sounds.
B.Some do it just for personal satisfaction.
C.Some go climbing at weekends or in holidays.
D.It is a quicker and more intense(劇烈的;緊張的)kind of climbing.
E. If a climber slips, a rope can stop him from falling.
F. Climbing takes strength, control and good balance.
G. It is more challenging and dangerous, but also more fun.

Dear Seth,
You’re only three years old, and at this point in your life you can’t read, much less understand what I’m going to try to tell you in this letter. But someday, when you’re ready, I hope you will find some wisdom and value in what I share with you.

Be open to life anyway

It often seems that people have a hard time in speaking a seemingly familiar name. Did you ever have someone's name on the tip of your tongue and yet you were not able to recall it? When this happened, what did you do? Next time this happens again, what should you do?
You should not try to recall it. Instead, just do something else for a couple of minutes and then the name may come into your head. Why? The name is just there, since you have met this person and learned his name. It, waiting there, only has to be dug out. The initial(最初的) effort to recall prepares the mind for operation, but it is the subconscious (下意識的) activities that go to work to dig up a dim(模糊的)memory. Forcing yourself to recall almost never helps because it doesn't loosen your memory; it only tightens it.
That’s why students find the preparatory method greatly helpful in examinations. They read over the questions before trying to answer any of them. Then they answer first the ones of which they are most confident. At the same time, deeper mental activities in the subconscious mind are taking place; work is being done on the more difficult questions. By the time the easier questions are answered, answers to the more difficult ones will usually begin to come into consciousness. It is often just a question of waiting for recall to come to the memory.
You see, forcing ourselves to think hard to recall something usually doesn’t help. Chances are that the harder we think, the more difficulty we face in thinking of what we want to. Offering our mind time to work is what we are expected to do.

Problem
People 【小題1】______ to recall what they are sure they know.
Solution
They are 【小題2】______ not to try to recall it immediately. They can do something else for a while 【小題3】_____ of thinking hard about it.
【小題4】______
It takes time for the subconscious activities to go to work to dig up a dim memory, in which case forcing oneself to recall can make the memory 【小題5】_____.
Example
Students find the preparatory method of great 【小題6】______ in examinations. They, having read over the questions, first answer easy ones. 【小題7】_____, the subconscious activities are 【小題8】_____ to deal with harder ones.
【小題9】______
People should offer their mind time to work so that a dim memory can be 【小題10】_____ up.
