Dear Robert,

To appreciate Tang poems well can further improve your language skills and enhance your understanding of Chinese culture. Let’s share my opinions with you on how to appreciate Tang peoms.

To start with, you had better know about some background knowledge about Tang poetry. Tang poetry refers to poetry written during China’s Tang Dynasty. During that time, poetry became an important part of social life at all levels of society. Du Fu, Li Bai and Bai Juyi were the best known poets at that time. Tang Dynasty poetry was simple and about common things like love, romance and nature that people appreciate.

As a Chinese saying goes, when one learns 300 poems of the Tang Dynasty by heart, one is sure to be able to write poems. Therefore, read as much as possible about poems and you can have a better understanding of Tang poems.

Yours,

Li Hua

Throughout history, gold has been a sign of purity, beauty and power. Calling something golden means it has great quality and value. For example, the golden rule is possibly the world's most widespread moral rule. It says people should treat others the way they themselves would like to be treated. Every major religion has its own version of this idea.

The golden ratio is found in art, architecture and nature. It describes a rectangle with a length about one and one-half times its width. Objects using this ratio in their design seem to please the eye more than others.

Philosophers(哲學(xué)家) have their own golden idea. The golden mean says moderation in all things is the best way to live one's life. It is an idea linked to the Ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle. Similar thoughts exist in Buddhism and Confucianism.(哲學(xué)思想)

Ancient Greek myths told of a time long ago when people lived in peace and happiness. Poets called it the Golden Age. A golden age now describes a historical period of great artistic, scientific or economic progress. It can even recall a time of success and popularity for an industry. For example, the nineteen thirties and forties were called the Golden Age of Radio.

You may have heard the proverb silence is golden. This means silence is of great value. It is sometimes better to say nothing than to speak.

You might say your child was good as gold when he behaved well at school. British writer Charles Dickens used this expression in eighteen forty-three. He was describing the child Tiny Tim in the book "A Christmas Carol."

In nineteen thirty-seven, American playwright Clifford Odets wrote a play called "The Golden Boy." This expression describes a young man who has many good qualities and a bright future.

You might tell someone you are golden when that person does something very well.

Gold digger is another description. But this does not say something nice about a person. A gold digger is someone who seeks to marry a rich person because he or she is only interested in that person's money.

Maybe you like old songs from the nineteen fifties or sixties that are still well known and popular today. These are called golden oldies. In the nineteen eighties and nineties, an American television comedy series told about four older women living in Miami, Florida. The Golden Girls often dealt with social issues in a funny way.

Today, most older people look forward to reaching their golden years. This is when hard-working people can retire to a life of ease and fulfillment.

1.According to the “golden ratio”,which of the following objects in the most pleasant to see?

2.The article mainly tells us ___

A.the value of gold

B.the expressions with “gold”

C.the history of gold industry

D.the purity, beauty and power of gold

B.At the beginning of the twenty first century, computer reached its Golden Age.

C.She only dates guys with money. She’s a Gold Digger.

D.My grandfather is 65 and is looking forward to reaching his Golden Ages

4.What we can infer from the passage is that ___

A.all the expressions in the article are positive deacription

B.the “golden mean” is an idea linked to the Ancient Greek philowpher Aristotle

C.the “golden oldies” refers to the popular soon in the 1950s or 60s which are not well-know today

D.in their golden yearw, older people can still work hard before ther retire

Running like the wind, roaring (咆哮) like thunder, tigers have long been feared and respected as a king of the animal world. But last week a report said that there are no more than 30 wild tigers left in south China.

This was the conclusion of a team of scientists from China's State Forestry Administration and the World Nature Fund.

The South China tiger, also known as the Chinese tiger, is native to southern China. In the 1950's, there were over 4000 tigers found in mountain forests in the country. But due to the destruction of their natural habitat and uncontrolled hunting, it has been pushed on to the list of the world's top ten most endangered species.

Sixty?six of the big cats can be found in the cages of a dozen zoos around China. But they are nothing like their wild cousins. They have lost their natural skills such as hunting and killing. If they were set free they could not look after themselves.

“Breeding has damaged the quality of the species”, said Pei Enle, deputy director of the Shanghai Zoo.

To reintroduce the species into the wild, the country started a programme to send five to ten young tigers to South Africa. Four of them have already arrived. Progress has been made as two elder tigers have recovered some of their instincts(本能) and can hunt wild animals by themselves at the African base.

“South Africans are very experienced in reintroducing big animals to the wild. The country has very good natural conditions for the tigers to learn in”, said Lu Jun, office director of the National Wildlife Research and Development Center. “We tried in Fujian Province, but it was not successful as there was not a complete eco?chain(生物鏈) and there was a lack of space.”

The tigers should return to China in 2007 when the reservations in Fujian are ready.

1.What is the main reason for the South China tiger becoming one of the world's top ten most endangered species?

A. Because it has lost its natural instincts.

B. Because there is not a complete eco?chain.

C. Because there is no space for it.

D .Because uncontrolled hunting has destroyed its natural living conditions.

2.How is the programme of sending several tigers to South Africa getting on?

A. Its effect still remains to be seen.

B. Two tigers can already compete with their wild cousins.

C. Some of the tigers are already on the road to recovering their natural skills.

D. The tigers should be able to recover their instincts completely by 2007.

3.By saying “but they are nothing like their wild cousins”, the writer means that________.

A. they are no longer feared by other wild animals

B. they don't know how to hunt or kill

C. a complete change has resulted in the species because of breeding

D. to reintroduce them into the wild has become an urgent task

4.What is the purpose of sending young tigers to South Africa?

A. To help the tigers recover their ability to live in the wild.

B. To provide them with a better environment.

C. To get the tigers to go on a tour.

D. To find a complete eco?chain for them.

It’s necessary to use different ways to communicate for different purposes. Study, made by Jeff Hancock of Cornell University in New York, has found that people are twice as likely to tell lies in phone conversations as they are in e-mails.

Hancock made an investigation by asking 30 students to keep a communication diary for a week. In it they noted the number of conversations or e-mail exchanges they had lasting more than 10 minutes, and how many lies they told. Hancock then worked out the number of lies per conversation for each medium. He found that lies made up 14% of e-mails, 21% of instant messages, 27% of face-to-face interactions and an astonishing 37% of phone calls.

His results, to be presented at the conferences on human computer interaction in Vienna, Austria, in April, have surprised psychologists.

Hancock says it is very important and effective whether a conversation is being recorded and could be reread, and whether it occurs in real time. People appear to be afraid to lie when they know that they will be responsible for what they have said in the conversation. This is why fewer lies appear in e-mail than on the phone.

People are even more likely to lie in real time—in an instant message or phone call. Many lies are sudden or immediate responses to demands that they don’t expect.”

Hancock hopes his research will help many a company work out the best ways for their employees to communicate. For instance, the phone might be the best medium for selling their products where employees are encouraged to stretch the truth. But given his results, work assessment, where honesty is regarded as more important than others, might be best done using e-mail.

Hancock’s study on people 1. in different ways of communications

2. drawn from the statistics

Lies 3. when the communicating ways change from e-mails to instant messages, to face-to-face interactions and to phone calls.

Reasons why people lie or don’t

●People won’t lie when their 4. are recorded and reread, or when they know they should take the 5. for what they have said.

●People lie in real time mostly because they have to answer 6. questions without hesitation.

Benefits that 7. can have from the study

●Using telephones for 8. because their employees can stretch the truth.

●Using e-mails for work assessment because their employees must say what they have done 9. .

Inference from the study

Suitable media should be chosen for different 10. purposes.
