(1) |

There’s a box of chocolates in the fridge. It’s been there for more than a week since I was given it as a present. I do love chocolates, but they make me fat if I eat too many! Can I control myself? If I eat one, will I have to eat all of them?
My son Harry is obsessed with playing Wii(/wi:/, 任天堂的一款游戲機(jī)) games. Sometimes, it’s difficult to get him to concentrate on his homework because he wants to play some more.
Last week I had to wake up a student in my class. I asked him why he was so tried and he said he had stayed up late to play his favourite Internet game, Farmville. He said he just couldn’t stop playing it! Now his academic work is suffering because he can’t control his urge to play games.
What my son, my student, and I myself need is simply self-control.
In the late 1960’s, American psychologist Walter Mischel launched an experiment about self-control. He left a group of four-year-olds in a room and told them that if they could wait 20 minutes, they could have two marshmallows, a kind of sweet. If they couldn’t wait, he would only give them one.
In videos of the experiment, you can see children squirming, kicking, hiding their eyes—desperately trying to control themselves. Some did wait patiently, while others couldn’t wait a single minute.
Years later, the self-controlled children turned out to get higher SAT scores and got into better colleges. The children who couldn’t wait were more likely to become bullies.
So, the chocolates are still in the fridge. My son Harry is doing his homework with a promise that he can play on the Wii later, and my student says he will try harder to control himself. We all have our own temptations. But if we can control them, we will achieve more.

A. all the children got two marshmallows
B. all the children waited patiently
C. self-control can help children succeed later
D. the children who lack self-control get higher SAT scores

B. The writer’s son is addicted to Farmville.
C. The writer’s student is addicted to chocolates.
D. The writer’s student is addicted to Farmville.

There are 3 basic types of rock climbing.Top roping is probably one of the most common types and the climber basically climbs with a partner.Top roping is a style in which a rope, used for the climber's safety, runs from a belayer(保護(hù)員)at the foot of a route through one or more carabiners(鐵 鎖)connected to an anchor system at the top of the route and back down to the climber, usually attaching to the climber by means of a harness.Assuming that the route is bottomtotop, the toprope climber generally will not fall more than a short distance and can thus safely attempt even the most difficult routes. The second type, which is very similar to top roping is called lead climbing. The buddy(同伴)system works the same way,one man on the ground belaying and the other climbing, but this time instead of the rope being at the top of the rock it has to be hooked into clasps(鉤子)as the climber climbs up the rock. In both of these types of rock climbing the climbers has the luxury to sit off the rock face and rest on the rope. However, lead climbing requires the climber to hang from the rock face with one hand, grab the rope ,and pull it up to lip it into the clasps, and this can be very hard depending on many different things. The third type of rock climbing is called bouldering.Bouldering is a type of free climbing without any ropes or harnesses. The climber tends to stay much closer to the ground. This is the most demanding of all climbing. The climber must be able to complete the route without taking a rest on the rope.Often, during a bouldering route the climber is required to do a maneuver called dyno(動態(tài)動作). Dynos are basically launching yourself off the rock face, and then grabbing at a hold further away from you. This type of maneuver is where mental training plays a major role in climbing. Believe it or not, climbing is said to be about 75% legs and only 25% arms.To climb successfully one must use wonderful technique. One of the major rules of rock climbing is to always have 3 points touching the rock face.Whether it is both feet and one hand,or one foot and both hands,it is much easier to have your weight distributed on 3 points than it is 2.Another important concept to grasp is that your arms in most cases will not do the climbing;they only hold you into the rock face so that your legs are actually pushing you upward. The closer you are to the rock face, the easier it is to climb. There is an endless supply of stories about sleepwalkers(夢游者). People have been said to climb on roofs, solve mathematical problems, write music, walk through windows, and do murder in their sleep.
In Revere, Masachusctts, a hundred policemen scarched for a lost boy who left his home in his sleep and woke up five hours later on a strange sofa in a strange living room, with no idea how he had got there.
At the University of Lowa, a student was reported to have the habit of getting up in the middle of the night and walking three—quarters of a mile to the lowa River. He would take a swim and then go back to his room to bed.
An American expert on sleep claims(聲稱) that he has never seen a sleepwalker. He is said to know more about sleep than any other living man, and during the last thirty—five years he has lost a lot of sleep watching people sleep. He says, “Of course, I know that there are sleepwalkers because I have read about them in the newspapers. But none of my sleepers ever walked, and if I were to advertise for sleepwalkers for an experiment, I doubt whether I would get many takers(應(yīng)征者).”
