解析:

7. D。從上文at one time:曾經(jīng)一度時(shí)期,however表示轉(zhuǎn)折,說(shuō)明與現(xiàn)在的情形不一樣。

11. A。/ 12. C。

13. D。at all costs:不惜一切代價(jià),at the same time:同時(shí),at the least:至少,起碼。

15. B。排除A.

16. D. 表示處所用at(from)

17. A。/ 18. A。從上一句students study only in their concentrated area, 可知幾乎沒(méi)有學(xué)生敢冒險(xiǎn)學(xué)習(xí)選修以外的課程。

19. C。/ 20. B。in any case: 在任何情況下, in all:總共,in the end :最后.

Dorothea Dix left home at an early age—of her own free will—to live with her grandmother.

At fourteen, Dorothea was teaching school at Worcester, Massachusetts. A short time after she had begun teaching, she set up a school for young girls in her grandparents’ home. Stress was placed on moral character at Dorothea’s school, which she conducted until she was thirty-three.

She was forced to give up teaching at her grandparents’ home, however, when she became ill a few years of inactivity followed.

In 1841 Dorothea began to teach again, accepting a Sunday school class in the East Cambridge, Massachusetts prison. Here she first came upon insane people (精神病人) locked up together with prisoners.

In those days insane people were treated even worse than prisoners. There were only a few madhouses in the entire country. Therefore prisons, poor houses, and houses of correction were used to keep the insane.

Dorothea Dix made a careful investigation of the inhuman treatment of the insane. It was considered unfeminine (不適合) for a woman to devote herself to such work at this time. But this did not stop Dorothea Dix from providing proper medical care for the insane.

Gradually, because of her investigations, conditions were improved. More than thirty mental institutions were founded or rebuilt in the United States because of her hard work. Dorothea also spread her investigations to England and to other parts of Europe.

During the Civil War, Dorothea served as superintendent (負(fù)責(zé)) of women hospital nurses in the Union army. When the war was over, she returned to her work of improving conditions for insane people.

This article is mainly about ________.

How did Dorothea Dix first realize the mistreatment of insane people?

A. an illness       B. the Civil War      C. her trip to England      D. her grandmother’s death

How are the events of Dorothea Dix’s life presented in the passage?

Everyone has got two personalities—the one that is shown to the world and the other that is secret and real. You don't show your secret personality when you're awake because you can control your behaviour, but when you're asleep, your sleeping position shows the real you.In a normal night,of course, people frequently change their position. The important position is the one that you go to sleep in.

If you go to sleep on your back, you're a very open person. You normally trust people and you are easily influenced by fashion or new ideas. You don't like to upset people,so you never express your real feelings. You're quite shy and you aren't very confident.

If you sleep curled up(卷曲),you are probably a very nervous person. You have a low opinion of yourself and so you're often defensive. You're shy and you don't normally like meeting people. You prefer to be on your own. You're easily hurt.

If you sleep on your side, you have usually got a well-balanced personality. You know your strengths and weaknesses. You're usually careful. You have a confident personality. You sometimes feel anxious, but you don't often get depressed. You always say what you think even if it annoys people.

High school dropouts(輟學(xué)者)earn an average of $ 9,000 less per year than graduates. Now a new study dispels a common belief why they quit. It’s much more basic than flunking out(不及格).

Society tends to think of high school dropouts as kids who just can’t cut it. They are lazy, and perhaps not too bright. So researchers were surprised when they asked more than 450 kids who quit school about why they left.

“The vast majority actually had passing grades and they were confident that they could have graduated from high school.” John Bridgeland, the executive researcher said. About 1 million teens leave school each year. Only about half of African-American and Hispanic(美籍西班牙的)student will receive a diploma(證書(shū)),and actually all dropouts come to regret their decision. So, if failing grades don’t explain why these kids quit, what does? Again,John Bridgeland:"The most dependable finding was that they were bored.” “They found classes uninteresting; they weren’t inspired or motivated. They didn’t see any direct connection between what they were learning in the classroom to their own lives, or to their career aspirations.”

The study found that most teens who do drop out wait until they turn sixteen, which happens to be the age at which most states allow students to quit. In the US,only one state,New Mexico, has a law requiring teenagers to stay in high school until they graduate. Only four states: California, Tennessee, Texas and Utah, plus the District of Columbia, require school attendance until age 18, no exceptions, another researcher, says raising the compulsory(義務(wù)的)attendance age may be one way to keep more kids in school.

“As these dropouts look back, they realize they’ve made a mistake. And anything that sort of gives these people an extra push to stick it out and it through to the end, is probably helpful measure.”

New Hampshire may be the next state to raise its school attendance age to 18. But critics say that forcing the students unwilling to continue their studies to stay in school misses the point-the need for reform. It's been called for to reinvent high school education to make it more challenging and relevant, and to ensure that kids who do stick it out receive a diploma that actually means something.

Most high school students drop out of' school because__.

A. they have failing grades                                B. they take no interest in classes

The underlined words “stick it out” probably means“__”.

C. love having classes                                       D. believe in themselves

From the passage,we can infer the following EXCEPT that_.

A. the grades of most dropouts at school were acceptable
