Every hour spent in watching TV, DVDs and videos as an adult reduces life expectancy by almost 22 minutes, a study suggests. And viewing TV for an average of six hours a day can cut short your life by five years.
The research claims that a sedentary(久坐的) lifestyle is as bad for health as smoking and obesity, because of the dangers caused by inactivity and the greater opportunities it offers for unhealthy eating.
The academics conducting the study set out to calculate the overall risk to life expectancy from watching television. Their research involved more than 11,000 people over the age of 25.
Writing in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, they concluded. "TV viewing time may be associated with a loss of life, which is similar to other major chronic disease risk factors such as physical inactivity and obesity."
The researchers, from the University of Queensland, used information from the Australian Diabetes, Obesity and Lifestyle Study, together with population and death rate data.
But they said: "Although we used Australian data, the effects in other industrialized and developing countries are likely to be similar, considering the large amounts of time spent watching TV and similarities in disease patterns." In the United Kingdom, the average amount of time spent watching TV is four hours a day, compared with five hours in the United States.
Earlier this year, a separate study suggested the risk of developing type 2 diabetes and heart disease, or dying early, rises by as much as 20 percent after just two hours a day in front of the box.
England's Chief Medical Officer, Sally Davies, said: "Physical activity offers huge benefits and these studies back what we already know - that a sedentary lifestyle carries additional risks. We hope these studies will help more people realize that there are many ways to get exercise."

If you live in America in the 21st century you'll probably have to listen to a lot of people tell you how busy they are. It's become the default response when you ask anyone how they are doing:"Busy!""Crazy busy!".It is,pretty obviously,a boast disguised as a complaint. And the common response is a kind of congratulation:"That's a good problem to have,"or"Better than the opposite."
Notice it isn't generally people pulling back-to-back shifts in the ICU or commuting by bus to three minimum-wage jobs who tell you how busy they are. What those people are is not busy but tired.Exhausted!Dead on their feet. It's almost always people whose busyness is purely self-imposed:work and obligations they've taken on voluntarily, classes and activities they've "encouraged" their kids to participate in.They're busy because of their own ambition or drive or anxiety, because they're addicted to busyness and dread that they might have to face in its absence.
Almost everyone I know is busy. They feel anxious and guilty when they aren't either working or doing something to promote their work. It's something they have chosen.Busyness serves as a kind of existential reassurance(令人安心的保證),a measure against emptiness, obviously your life cannot possibly be silly or tiny or meaningless if you are so busy, completely booked,in demand every hour of the day.
Idleness is not just a vacation. It is as necessary to the brain as vitamin D is to the body, and deprived of it we suffer a mental affliction as ugly as rickets. The space and quiet that idleness provides is a necessary condition for standing back from life and seeing it whole, for making unexpected connections and waiting for the wild summer lightning strikes of inspiration."Idle dreaming is often the essence of what we do,"wrote Thomas Pynchon.Archimedes' "Eureka"in the bath, Newton's apple :history is full of stories of inspirations that come in idle moments.
【小題1】When many Americans say"Crazy busy", they mean______.
A.they are really tired of their present situation |
B.they are really proud of their present life |
C.they are complaining about their current work |
D.their life are full of all kinds of problems |
A.history is full of interesting stories |
B.Archimedes and Newton were very busy, so they made great discoveries |
C.people may get inspiration when they are idle |
D.inspirations come from hard work |
A.a(chǎn)mbition | B.a(chǎn)nxiety | C.busyness | D.dread |
A.generally people pulling back-to-back shifts in the ICU tell you they are busy |
B."Dead on their feet" means "being tired out" |
C.a(chǎn)ll the kids are self-imposed due to the drive and motivation |
D.The author seems to agree that idleness is better than busyness |

Drunken driving sometimes called American's socially accepted form of murder has become a national epidemic(流行。瓻very hour of every day about three Americans on average are killed by drunken drivers, adding up to an incredible 250,000 over the past ten years.A drunken driver is usually referred to as one with 0.10-blood alcohol content or roughly three beers, glasses of wines or shots of whisky drunk within two hours.Heavy drinking used to be an acceptable part of the American manly image and judges were lenient in most courts, but the drunken killing has recently caused so many well-publicized tragedies, especially concerning young children, that public opinion is no longer tolerant.
Twenty states have raised the legal drinking age to 21, reversing a trend (逆轉(zhuǎn)潮流) in the 1960s to reduce it to 18.After New Jersey lowered it to 18, the number of people killed by 18-20-year-old drivers more than doubled, so the state recently upped it back to 21.
Reformers, however, fear raising the drinking age will have little effect unless accompanied by educational programs to help young people to develop "responsible attitudes" about drinking and teach them to resist peer pressure to drink.
Some states are punishing bars for serving customers too many drinks.A bar in Massachusetts was fined for serving six or more double brandies to a customer who was "obviously drunk" and later drove off the land, killing a nine-year-old boy.
As the accidents continue to occur daily in every state, some Americans are even beginning to speak well of the 13 years national prohibition (禁令) of alcohol that began in 1919, which President Hoover called the "noble experiment".They forget that legal prohibition didn't stop drinking, but encouraged political corruption (腐敗) and organized crime. As with the booming drug trade generally, there is no easy solution.
1.It can be inferred from the passage that drunken driving has become a major problem in the United States because___.
A.most Americans like drinking
B.heavy dinking is hard to avoid
C.Americans are not shocked by traffic accidents
D.many Americans are killed by traffic accidents
2.What can be inferred from the fact of the traffic accidents in New Jersey?
A.Drivers should not be allowed to drink.
B.Young drivers were usually bad.
C.The legal drinking age should be raised.
D.Some drivers didn't reach the legal drinking age.
3.The underlined word "lenient" in the first paragraph means___.
A.cruel B.serious C.determined D.merciful[來源:Z§4.Which of the following best shows the writer's opinion of drunken driving?
A.It may cause organized crime.
B.The new laws can stop heavy drinking.
C.There should be no bars to serve drinks.
D.It is difficult to solve the problem.

The bar-tailed godwit (斑尾鷸)has just broken its own record for the world’s longest non-stop flight, including humans in planes, according to a report made by Lund University Press. The bird can fly non-stop for eight days, while the most impressive man-made airplane can only remain in the sky for 82 hours without a stop.
The bar-tailed godwit’s journey, from Alaska to New Zealand, covers over 6,835 miles. It completes this trip twice a year, in autumn going to New Zealand, and in spring back to Alaska. The tireless bird ends the trip without stopping once for food or rest. All other birds can only finish trips that are twice as short as what the bar-tailed godwit travels.
One reason for the bar-tailed godwit’s success is that it has made the best use of its fuel, which is only 0.41 percent of its body weight over each hour of any given long flight. Hedenstrom, a professor from Lund University, says, “This figure is extremely low compared with other birds.” The bird also has a special body shape that helps it fly easily. It stores body fat and protein to manage its trips. It also travels fast, compared to other birds and animals.
Many questions remain about this bird record holder that never gets lost in the air. Researchers wonder whether it has an inside compass (指南針) that helps it to know the direction. Please watch how beautiful bar-tailed godwits look as they come in for a landing, along with other birds.
1.For the flight from Alaska to New Zealand, the bar-tailed godwit__________
A.doesn’t need to stop to eat |
B.is afraid of hot weather |
C.seems very tired at last |
D.should fly less than 7,000 meters |
2.The main reason why the bar-tailed godwit can break the record is that it ______.
A.eats little food every hour |
B.has a special body shape |
C.stores much water in its body |
D.has very light body weight |
3.The last paragraph tells us that _________.
A.researchers have understood the bird very well |
B.the bird has a very good sense of direction |
C.there are still many who doubt the bird’s ability |
D.the bird has an inner compass |
