Paul Salopek is an old-fashioned explorer, setting out on foot to circle the world. He is also a modern-day explorer. On top of a few clothes, a small first-aid kit and notebooks, he is carrying a recorder, a video camera, a small computer and a satellite phone—a telephone that connects to a satellite and can be used in many places where cell-phones don’t work.
The journey is long 21,000 miles! It will take seven years to complete it.
Salopek was born in California and spent his childhood in Mexico. He says he has always liked to travel and doesn’t like to rush. At the age of fourteen, he climbed Moun. Whitney in California and crossed the state’s Sierra Nevada Mountains alone. When he was fifteen years, he walked the length of Death Valley. He once rode a mule 2,000 miles through mountains in Mexico.
A longtime reporter, Salopek has reported from Africa, Asia and Mexico. Now 51 years old, he plans to keep writing. As he travels around the world, he is writing stories about the people he meets and the way they live. He looks for how people find local solutions to big problems such as lack of food and water. He also records the sounds he hears and takes photos of the sky and the Earth’s surface.
The long walk started in the Rife Valley in Ethiopia in East Africa. Many consider East Africa to be home to the first humans, who lived 160,000 years ago.
Salopek is retracing the paths our ancestors took as they left Africa and settled in parts of the Middle East, Europe, Asia and the Americas. As Salopek is walking, he is learning more about himself and all of humankind.

Forming good study habits is a great start on a path to success. Even small changes can make a big difference and, over time, will change not only your approach to studying and organizing but your overall outlook on school and work.
Having effective (有效的) study habits creates a more efficient academic environment. Planning your study schedule in advance and faithfully sticking to it saves time. Even giving consideration to small details makes a difference. Developing an efficient study plan can make your academic life go much more smoothly.
When you have good study habits, you tend to be less stressed. Students who are anxious on exam days are typically those who came unprepared. Students who organize their lives and stick to their study schedules are confident and relaxed at test-taking time.
Regardless of whether you are setting a good example for classmates or for friends, showing good study habits can have a positive effect on those around you. Your friends and classmates may turn to their own studies as your study. Your roommates may be inspired to organize their own rooms and study plans.

Dinner customs (風(fēng)俗) are different around the world. If you are a dinner guest (客人) in Ghana(非洲的加納), this information will help you.
In Ghana, dinner is usually from four in the afternoon to six in the evening. But there are no strict rules about time in Ghana. Whenever a guest arrives, a family offers food.
When you go to a home, the host takes you to the living room first. At this time everyone welcomes you. Then you go to the dinner room. There you wash your hands in a bowl of water. All the food is on the table.
In Ghana you usually eat with your fingers. You eat from the same dish as everyone else. But you eat from one side of the dish only. It is not polite to get food from the other side of the dish. After dinner, you wash your hands again in a bowl of water.
Most meals in Ghana have a dish called fufu. People in Ghana make fufu from the powder(粉末) of some plants. Sometimes they cut the fufu with a saw(鋸) because it is very hard and like rubber(橡膠). You must chew fufu well, or you can get sick. You eat fufu with fingers of your right hand only.
