A

Use cash. Instead of paying things with credit cards, use cash for non-bill spending such as eating out, gas and groceries. Spending cash makes the spending more real, and there’s an added advantage of knowing when you’re out of cash.

B

Small weekly savings transfers. I got this idea from my friend, who automatically deducts(扣除) $20 a week from his check to savings. I decided that I could live with the deduction of $40/week without really feeling it — it’s a relatively small transfer that I barely notice, and I save about $2,000 a year!

C

Stay at home. Going out makes you spend money unnecessarily. You eat at restaurants, go to the mall, and stop at the gas station for snacks. It’s hard to avoid spending when you’re on the road. Instead, stay at home and find free entertainment. It’s also a great way to bond with your family.

D

Don’t get catalogs(商品宣傳冊(cè)). Their announcements of sales or cool new products make it very tempting(引誘人的) to buy something you don’t need. Instead, stop getting the catalogs, and you’ll spend less.

E

Keep a 30-day list. If you have an impulse(沖動(dòng)) to buy something you don’t absolutely need, put it on a 30-day list. You can’t buy anything but necessities — everything else goes on the list. When the 30 days are up, you can buy it — but most likely, the strong urge to buy it will be gone, and you can evaluate it more calmly.

F

Cook at home. I know it seems more difficult than eating out. But it doesn’t have to be hard. Make home-made pizza with a ready-made crust, some sauce, cheese and veggies. Put some spices on something and throw it in the oven while you cook some brown rice. Not only is this much cheaper than eating out, but it’s healthier.

閱讀下面幾位消費(fèi)者的情況介紹,并為他們匹配合適的建議。

1. Mr. And Mrs. Brown are a newly-married couple who work in the same company. They don’t earn much in their work, but they have to spend a larger part of their income to pay for their rent and daily necessities. Furthermore, they seldom eat at home because neither of them cooks well. Therefore, they have to pay a lot more extra money for food.

2. Mrs. Wang enjoys shopping very much because she is free all day long. Whenever she is wandering in the shops or stores, she will have a strong impulse and find it difficult for her to get back home with her hands empty. But it is quite often that she will find what she has bought is almost useless when she gets home.

3. Tony is a university student in New York, who is far away from his parents. He pays everything with his credit card. He finds it very cool for him to purchase with his credit card. However, he often finds his money has already run out in the middle of the month.

4. Miss Betty is a high school girl whose parents give her some money every week. As her parents don’t earn much money, she wants to save some money secretly so that she can buy a digital camera.

5. Miss Catherine is a young girl who is easily to be persuaded into buying something useless. She will get encouraged to buy something when she sees an advertisement. Her parents have warned her many times against doing such stupid things, but it doesn’t work much.

Sleep is something we all do. But some people need to sleep more than others. Babies sleep most of the time. Children in school sleep about ten to twelve hours a night. Most grown-ups sleep only seven or eight hours.

All parts of our bodies have to rest after they work. Our arms need a rest after we lift heavy things. When we run fast, our legs work hard. They get tired. We have to rest them. Our brains work hard, too.     72      We can sit quite still and rest our arms and legs. But our brains aren’t resting. They go right on thinking as long as we are awake.

Our brains slow down a bit when we sleep and dream.    Instead of thinking wide-awake thought, our brains make up dreams. Some dreams are very pleasing. Some are not. Most of the time we forget them when we wake up.

Scientists have tried to find out what would happen if people were not allowed to sleep. They asked some people not to go to bed. The people stayed up all night and all the next day. They stayed up the next night, too and the day after. They played games. But they made mistakes. They forgot things.      . The people grew rude and mean. They became angry with their friends. Finally they were too tired to stand up. The moment they sat down, they fell asleep.

Scientists found that if people are not allowed to sleep, they act in an unusual way.

But we do know that we need it to stay well.

So tonight have a good sleep. Lie down under the covers. Shut your eyes. Let your thoughts travel about. Soon you’ll stop thinking. You’ll be asleep.

A. But even as we sleep our brains are doing some work.

B. It was hard for their tired brains to work.

C. When we are awake, they help us pay attention to the world around us.

D. No one knows quite surely why sleep is so good for us.

E. Good sleep helps to improve one’s memory.

F. But babies, children and grown-ups ----all of us need to have our sleep.

閱讀理解。
     根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容,從短文后的選項(xiàng)中選出能填入空白處的最佳選項(xiàng)。選項(xiàng)中有兩項(xiàng)
為多余選項(xiàng)。
Six Ways to Improve Reading Comprehension
Help your child keep what he reads --- a crucial skill, especially as he gets older and needs to
gain important information from textbooks.
     Let him read aloud.
This forces him to go slower, which gives him more time to process what he reads.   1
Provide the right kinds of books.
2   He should recognize at least 90 percent of the words without any help. Stopping to figure
out a word makes it tough for him to focus on the overall meaning of the story.
3   To gain meaning from text, your child needs to read quickly and smoothly- a skill known
as fluency. Rereading familiar, simple books gives your child practice at decoding words quickly,
so he'll become more fluent.
     Talk to the teacher.
If your child is struggling strongly with comprehension, he may need more help with his reading-for
example, building his vocabulary or practicing phonics skills.
     Supplement class reading.
If his class is studying a particular theme, look for easy-to-read books or magazines on the topic
. Some previous knowledge will help him get better prepared and make his way through tougher
classroom texts.
     Talk about what he's reading.
This "talking processing" helps him remember and think through the themes of the book.   4  . For
example:
Before: "What interests you in this book?"
During: "   5   . Is it turning out the way you thought it would?"
After: "Can you summarize the book? What did you like about it?"
A. Reread to build fluency.
B. Plus, he's not only seeing the words, he's hearing them, too.
C. What's going on in the book?
D. Do you know all the characters' names in the story?
E. Make sure your child gets lots of practice of reading books that aren't too hard.
F. He should recognize at least 90 percent of the words without any help.
G. Ask questions before, during, and after a reading session.
