ChiChi weighs only 13 pounds. “He’s so tiny,I can carry him with one hand,” says Mary Lane.“Most people see him and think he’s useless.”
But last October,ChiChi proved to be more than just a pretty face. Mary and her husband,Rick, were relaxing on the beach one afternoon while on vacation in North Carolina’s Outer Banks. As usual,ChiChi was lying on his blanket in his own little beach chair.
“We had our noses buried in books,”recalls Rick,“when suddenly the dog became extremely uneasy. His bark was different from anything we had heard before. And he would not let us ignore him.”
ChiChi ran back and forth in front of his chair as if to run down the beach. The Lanes sat up to see two elderly women in the ocean, about 100 yards down the beach and 10 feet off shore. One was on her back, her head under the waves. The other was struggling hard to keep her friend’s head above the surface.
The Lanes rushed across the sand and into the surf. Rick went to the woman in danger of drowning, while Mary held fast on to the other one and pulled her up on the beach.“Then I went back to help Rick,” Mary says.“The sand dropped off steeply, and a riptide(激流)was beating the woman under. She was completely helpless.”
Not getting well from recent knee surgery, the woman had been unable to turn over or push herself up.“Her friend had been in danger too,” Mary says.“The waves were pushing her around. There’s no way she could have held on much longer.”
The women hadn’t called out for help. “They were struggling so hard that there was no time for screaming,” Mary recalls.“But ChiChi had sensed their danger.”
Duty done,ChiChi was back in his chair, asleep,by the time the two women were on dry ground and the Lanes had returned to their blankets.Luckily, the women were fine, though shaken. They thanked the Lanes for saving their lives.
Back home in Greensboro,North Carolina, the Lanes ordered a special collar with the words “Hero Dog” on it.

Losing a baby tooth can be fun for a kid. You can put it under your pillow and look forward to finding some money there in the morning. And then you can watch your new permanent(永恒的) tooth grow in its place.
But if a permanent tooth falls out, that’s a problem. There isn’t another one under the gum(齒齦)that can replace it. Unfortunately, this happens to some older people. And if permanent teeth fall out or need to be pulled, an older person might need dentures.
Dentures, known as false teeth, are a set of replacement teeth for any teeth that are missing. There are partial dentures, which take the place of only a few teeth and prevent the others from changing position. If all the teeth are gone, the person would need complete dentures, which replace every tooth in the mouth.
Dentures can cause pains at first and take little time to get adjusted to. They also need special care. They should be brushed daily with a special denture brush and cleanser and soaked(浸泡) in denture solution when not in the mouth.
Dentures are important for the old because, without teeth, it’s hard to smile, talk, and eat properly. But it can be a little weird if you see someone take out his or her dentures. It can also be strange to see someone, like a grandparent, without dentures in because he or she won’t have any teeth. Try not to make fun of the person because this could cause hurt feelings.
People usually lose their permanent teeth due to periodontal disease(牙周炎), or gum disease, which is caused by bacteria that attacks the gums. Diseased gums aren’t strong and healthy, so teeth can get loose and fall out. Older people often have many cavities(洞)that have been filled over the years, and these fillings can weaken over time, leading to more tooth problems.
1.If one of your baby teeth falls out, you ________.
A. should have a false tooth fixed in its place
B. have to put it under your pillow at once
C. will gain a permanent tooth in future
D. can exchange it for some money
2.A person wearing dentures ________.
A. should brush them with a special denture brush every few days
B. will take a very long time to adjust himself or herself to them
C. will experience unpleasant feelings at the beginning of fixing them
D. should use denture solution to soak them in his or her mouth
3.Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A. Partial dentures can prevent the remaining teeth from changing position.
B. Old people will find it hard to smile, talk, and eat properly without teeth.
C. A person’s teeth will possibly get loose if diseases strike his gums.
D. It is hard for a person to wear dentures if all his teeth have fallen out.
4.What does the underlined word “weird” mean in the fifth paragraph?
A. inconvenient B. excited

If you took the strengths of others and compared them to your weaknesses, would this make you feel good? The funny thing is that this is what most of us do at one time or another—and some of us do it pretty often. It’s a sure-fire recipe for a drop in self-confidence and for unhappiness. So how can we stop comparing ourselves with others? Here are some tips I’ve found useful.
Awareness
Most often we do these social comparisons without realizing we’re doing it. It’s a natural act, I suppose. So the solution is to become aware. If you focus on these thoughts for a few days, it will become much easier with practice, and soon it’ll be hard not to notice.
Stop yourself
Once you realize you’re making these comparisons, stop yourself. Don’t feel bad—just admit the thought, and gently change the focus.
Count your blessings
Focus on what you do have, and on what you are already blessed with. Count what you have, not what you don’t have. Think about how lucky you are to have what you have, to have the people in your life who care about you. If you always want what others have, you will never have enough. You will always want more. That’s an endless cycle, and it will never lead to happiness. Instead, learn to realize that what you have is already enough.
Focus on your strengths
Instead of looking at your weaknesses, ask yourself what your strengths are. Be proud of them. Work on using them to your best advantages.
No one is perfect—we all know that. But we seem to feel bad when we don’t reach perfection. You aren’t perfect and you never will be. Keep trying to improve, but don’t think you’ll ever be the “perfect person”. If you realize that imperfection is what makes you who you are, you are already perfect.
