You are a German living in Berlin. One day you’ re walk??ing down the street, minding your own business, when sudden??ly a stranger comes up with a smile on his face. (a) Run away; (b) Call the police; or (c) Listen closely for the device to say in German," Konnen Sie mir bitte sagen, welches sauerkraut haufen kann?"

When the Voice is introduced in the Unite States in late April — at a price of (1,500 — it will be used to trans??late spoken English into Italian, German, French and Span??ish. The product comes with separate cartridges(盒式存儲器) for each of the four languages, which can be changed when the user travels from one country to another. It will be sold in Eu??rope soon after the US introduction, with cartridges that trans??late Italian, German, French and Spanish into English.

The Voice uses a microchip(微型集成電路片) to trans??late languages. It is Started by voice command and produces voice output through a built-in speaker. When the user makes a statement or asks a question, the Voice immediately repeats what has been said in another language.

In a recently published book, I came across some exercises with interesting names such as fishbone diagrams, lotus flowers and clustering. As I used these exercises in my classes, I noticed that students were interested. They said more and wrote more. They enjoyed expressing their ideas and sharing them in groups. They were no longer passively waiting for the bell , but actively taking part in the lesson. I find that creativity can act as a way to increase participation and improve fluency.

Creativity has become a popular word in recent years. Scholars in arts, psychology, business, education and science are all working to get a deeper understanding of it. Robert J. Stemberg is a creativity specialist and Yale professor of psychology. He defines creativity as “the ability to produce work that is both new (original) and appropriate(applicable to the situation ) ”. This definition is useful, as we want our students to use language in a new way and to use it correctly and properly. Mot scholars say there are two types of creativity: big “C” creativity and small “c” creativity. Big “C” creativity refers to genius level thinking that results in artistic masterpieces and scientific breakthroughs. Small “c” creativity refers to everyday level thinking that can be used in any situation our emphasis is on the latter. While it goes without saying that any of our students could go on to be the next Picasso or Edison, our aim is to help students produce more ideas and use language in a new way.

When the weather turns warm, everyone wants to be in or around the water. Learning how to keep safe is necessary if you plan to go swimming.

“Buddy up!” Always swim with a partner, every time-and this is very important. Even experienced swimmers can become tired or face sudden accidents, which might make it difficult to get out of the water. When you swim together, you can help each other or go for help in a minute.

Get skilled. It’s good to go be fully prepared. Learning some life-saving skills can help you save a life. A number of organizations offer free classes to both beginning and experienced swimmers and boaters. Check with local hospitals, or the Red Cross.

Know your limits (極限). Swimming an be a lot of fun and you might want to stay in the water as long as possible. If you’re not a good swimmer or you’re just learning to swim, don’t go in water that’s so deep for you and don’t try to keep up with skilled swimmers. That can be dangerous, especially when your friends are challenging you.

If you are a good swimmer and have had lessons, keep an eye on friends who aren’t as comfortable or as skilled as you are. If they or you are getting tired, you should take a break for a while.

Swim in safe areas only. It’s a good idea to swim only in places that are directed by a lifeguard. No one can expect changing ocean currents (水流), sudden storms, or other dangers. In the event that something does go wrong, lifeguards trained in life-saving skills are ready to help.

Swimming in an open body of water like a lake is different from swimming in a pool. Do your research so you know where not to swim, and pay attention to any warning sign(警告標志) posted in the area.

D

Time spent in a bookshop can be most enjoyable, whether you are a book—lover or merely go there to buy a book as a present. You may even have entered the shop just to find shelter from a sudden shower. Whatever the reason, you can soon become totally unaware of your surroundings.

The desire to pick up a book with an attractive dust jacket is irresistible, although this method of selection ought not to be followed, as you might end up with a rather dull book.

You soon become interested in some book or other, and usually it is only much later that you realize you have spent far too much time there and must dash off to keep some forgotten appointment—without buying a book, of course.

This opportunity to escape the realities of everyday life is, I think, the main attraction of a bookshop. There are not many places where it is possible to do this. A music shop is very much like a bookshop. You can wander round such places to your heart’s content. If it is a good shop, no assistant will approach you with the inevitable greeting:“Can I help you, sir?” You needn’t buy anything you don’t want. In a bookshop an assistant should remain in the background until you have finished browsing. Then, and only then, are his services necessary. Of course, you may want to find out where a particular section is, but when he has led you there, the assistant should retire discreetly(謹慎地) and look as if he is not interested in selling a single book.

You have to be careful not to be attracted by the variety of books in a bookshop. It is very easy to enter the shop looking for a book on, say ancient coins and to come out carrying a copy of the latest best-selling novel and perhaps a book about brass—rubbing—something which had only slightly interested you up till then. This volume on the subject, however, happened to be so well illustrated and the part of the text you read proved so interesting that you just had to buy it. This sort of thing can be very dangerous. Apart from running up a huge account, you can waste a great deal of time wandering from section to section.

63.The underlined phrase “dust jacket” means_______.

A.a kind of clothes                        B.a paper cover of a book

C.a dusty book                            D.a title of a book

64.You may spend too much time in a bookshop because_______.

A.the dust jackets are very attractive

B.you start reading one of the books

C.it is raining outside

D.you have to make sure you won’t buy a dull book as a present

65.In a good bookshop_______.

A.all the books there are interesting       B.the assistant greets you in a warm way

C.your heart is satisfied                D.you feel that you are in a music shop

66.The best title for this passage may be_______.

A.The Attraction of Bookshops          B.How to Spend Your Time

C.Bookshops and Their Assistants       D.How to Select Books
