There are different ways in which people try to deal with (處理) the problem of energy. One way is the greater production of common energy sources (能源), such as coal, oil and gas. The trouble with these sources, however, is that they are not renewable (可更新的,可再生的).
Another way is energy conservation (節(jié)能), which means using energy more efficiently (有效地). In some very cold countries people build special houses to save energy. They place materials (原料,材料) between the inside and the outside of the walls of the house to keep the cold out and the warmth in. The house is heated by the lights, the body heat of the people and the other equipment in it.
Finally, renewable energy sources are used even though they are often expensive to develop. One form of these is geothermal energy. In certain parts of the world the temperature of the earth increases thirty degrees centigrade (攝氏) with each kilometer down. At a result, at six kilometers, it rises to nearly two hundred degrees. To get the heat, water is pumped (壓;抽) down into the rocks and back up to the surface (表面). Heat from the earth is already used in certain countries.
1.How many ways of dealing with the energy problem are discussed in the text?
[ ]
2.From the text we learn that coal ________.
[ ]
A.is quite easy to produce
B.is not used most
C.is the most common source of energy
D.could be renewed only by new technology (技術(shù))
3.The underlined words geothermal energy in the third paragraph mean ________.
[ ]
4.Which of the following drawings shows the right way to get geothermal energy?
[ ]
5.At a place where the surface temperature is 15℃, how deep do you have to dig so as to get a temperature of 75℃?

This is a true story from Guyana. One day, a boy took a piece of paper from a box. He made a paper ball and pushed it into his nose. He couldn’t get it out. He ran crying to his mother. His mother couldn’t get the paper out, either. A week later, the paper was still in the boy’s nose. His nose began to have a bad smell.
So his mother took the boy to a hospital. The doctor looked up at the child’s nose, but she couldn’t get the paper out. She said she had to cut the boy’s nose to get the paper out.
The boy’s mother came home looking sad. She didn’t want her child to have his nose cut. The next day she took the boy to her friend Sidney who lived in a house with an old lady called May. May wanted to see the child, so the child let her look up his nose.
“Yes, I can see it,” May said. “It will be out soon.”
As she spoke, she shook some black pepper on the child’s nose. The child gave a mighty sneeze and the paper flew out. His mother was surprised. May told his mother to take the boy to the seaside for a swim, for the salt water would go up his nose and stop the bad smell.

When Cathleen Gardiner’s twins were born 17 years ago, doctors told her that they were a pair in a million. One had Down syndrome(低能綜合癥), while the other did not. Here, Cathleen tells their touching story.
Since Sean was born 17 years ago, I have always thought that he is just as wonderful as his brother and sister. Though he had a disability(殘疾), we have never viewed him as a burden. He has always been a blessing. The doctors explained that though they were twins, they came from two different eggs. Lisa could walk at 11 months old, while Sean didn’t take his first steps till he was three. By two, Lisa was talking a lot, but Sean wasn’t able to speak until he was nearly four.
For the first five years of his life, Sean needed a great deal of care. Looking after him was my full-time job, though I also worked as a technical adviser in a computing company. We never treated them differently. We gave them the same toys and spoke to them in the same way. We encouraged Sean to keep up with Lisa, even though he never could, and we would help him develop his abilities. We sent them to the same primary school even after doctors advised us that Sean should go to a school for the disabled.
We had to explain to Lisa that he wouldn’t learn as quickly as she would. She told us that she’d help him with his school work. Having a non-disabled twin has really helped Sean develop. The love they share has given him a great deal of support. Now Sean and Lisa are both about to finish high school. I don’t think he would have done nearly as well today without Lisa’s help.
56. At least how many children does Mrs. Gardiner have?
A. Two. B. Three. C. Four. D. One.
57. The third paragraph mainly tells us that _______.
A. the couple treated the twins equally
B. Cathleen did all she could to look after Sean
C. the couple didn’t follow the doctor’s advice
D. the couple encouraged Sean to grow up
58. All of the following statements are true except_________.
A. Sean couldn’t develope so well without his parents’great effort.
B. As a twin sister,Lisa gave Sean a lot of help.
C. As a mother of a disabeled child,Cathleen must have suffered a lot.
D. Cathleen loved Sean more than Lisa because of his disability.
59. This passage tells us that _________.
A. love can do wonders B. nobody is foolish or clever
C. being stupid doesn’t matter D. all men are born equal

The relations between man and wife are changing. A majority of working women remain in full charge of their home; they come back at night to the cleaning, washing, and cooking that constitute their second career. But more and more husbands are sharing the burden and willingly taking on chores that their fathers would rejected as unmanly, and as too mysteriously difficult anyway. In such cases, man and wife become equal partners, both working outside, both pushing the vacuum cleaner. Actually, the number of husbands who do help that way is much smaller than the number of those who accept the idea in theory. And when the equal partnership is a fact, it doesn’t always work well. The marriage can be destroyed when the wife is more successful in her profession than her husband in his, particularly when she earns more than he does. Sociologists see in this situation one of the main reasons for the increase in the divorce rate—another reason being the husband’s refusal to help with the housework or the care of the children. A third reason could be the growing awareness of the professional woman that she doesn’t have to remain married if she is too unhappy.
61. What is the housework like in the traditional husband’s eyes?
A. It’s a mysterious job.
B. It’s a little difficult
C. It’s women’s job.
D. It’s only men’s job.
62. The underlined sentence means________________.
A. When man and wife share the housework, man can’t do it well.
B. When man and wife share the housework, women can’t do it well.
C. when man and wife become equal at home, it doesn’t mean a good marriage.
D. when man and wife are equal partners, marriage doesn’t necessarily go well.
63. All of the following statements are true EXCEPT______________.
A. more husbands act in helping housework than those agreeing it without action.
B. more and more husbands are helping their wives to do housework.
C. most of the working women take charge of their house.
D. it is possible for the marriage to fail if women earn more money than husbands.
64. What may be the reason for the divorce according to the sociologist?
A. The wife refuses to look after the child.
B. The wife is more successful than her husband.
C. The wife is aware of her unhappiness in marriage.
D. Both A and B.
65. The best title of the passage is most likely to be___________.
A. Equal Partnership Means Nothing in Modern Family.
B. The Changing Relations between Man and Wife.
C. Reasons for Increasing Divorce.
D. The Relations between Husband and Wife.

Getting around in Canada is fairly easy. Most cities have urban transportation systems, including buses, streetcars, and trains, and some of the larger cities also have subways. You can board these systems at regular stops along their routes. Some let you pay with cash while others require tickets. If you don’t have a ticket for the bus, you must pay with the correct amount of money. This is because the driver does not carry any change. If you plan to stay in a city for a long time, you may want to buy a monthly pass or a package of tickets to save money. You can buy subway tickets at any subway station.
If you have to take several buses or subways for a single trip, you do not need to pay money each time. Simply ask the driver for a transfer (換乘) ticket, or take one from the machines on the subway platform.
If you are not sure where to board the bus or the streetcar, just ask someone or follow the crowd. People can usually only board at the front of the bus where you show your pass to the driver. When using public transportation, Canadians line up. First come, first serve, is a common approach to many activities in Canada, and it is considered to be extremely rude to cut in any line.
Maps of routes and schedules are usually available from the public transit (運(yùn)輸) company in your area, and there is also a telephone information line. You may ask someone for the name of the transit company in your area, and then look it up in the telephone book.
46. What is this passage mainly about?
A. How to use public transportation in Canada.
B. How to save money when traveling.
C. Where to find subways in larger cities.
D. How public transit companies work.
47. If you pay the bus fare in cash, _____.
A. you may be given some change
B. you can exchange money with the driver
C. it might cost you a little more
D. you must have the exact amount of money
48. By buying a monthly pass or a package of tickets, you can ______.
A. take a bus whenever you want B. go wherever you like
C. save money D. find comfortable seats
49. If you have to change subway lines on a single trip, _____.
A. you have to pay each time
B. you should buy another ticket from the machine
C. you must ask for the driver’s permission
D. you just need to pay once
