翻譯:農(nóng)民,以及大量的來自西班牙和意大利的外國人,來到布宜諾斯艾利斯尋找工作。

分析:as well as也,和,值得注意的是,在A as well as B的機(jī)構(gòu)里,語意的重點在A,不在B;a flood of意思是大量的,許多的;seeking分詞短語在句中作伴隨狀語。

分析:此句結(jié)構(gòu)though和although用法一致,都不可與but連用,表示盡管......但是……,句中saying分詞在此處表示原因。

The year is 2094. It has been announced that a comet is heading towards the Earth. Most of it will miss our planet, but two pieces will probably hit the southern half of the Earth.

On 17 July, a piece four kilometers wide enters the Earth’s atmosphere with a massive explosion. About half of the piece is destroyed, but the remaining part hits the South Atlantic at 200 times the speed of sound. The sea boils and a huge hole is made in the sea bed. Huge waves are created and spread outwards from the hole. The wall of water, a kilometer high, rushes towards southern Africa at 800 kilometers an hour. Cities on the African coast are totally destroyed and millions of people drowned.

Before the waves reach South America, the second piece of the comet lands in Argentina. Earthquakes and volcanoes are set off in the Andes Mountains. The shock waves move north into California and all around the Pacific Ocean. The cities of Los Angeles, San Francisco and Tokyo are completely destroyed by earthquakes. Millions of people in the southern half of the Earth are already dead, but the north won’t escape for long. Because of the explosions, the sun is hidden by clouds of dust, temperatures around the world fall to almost zero. Crops are ruined. The sun won’t be seen again for many years. Wars break out as countries fight for food. A year later, no more than 10 million people remain alive.

Could it really happen? In fact, it has already happened more than once in the history of the Earth. The dinosaurs were on the Earth for over 160 million years. Then 65 million years ago they suddenly disappeared. Many scientists believe that the Earth was hit by a piece of object in space. The dinosaurs couldn’t live through the cold climate that followed and they died out. Will we meet the same end?

1.What is mainly described in the passage?

A. A historic discovery.           B. An event of imagination.

C. A research on space.           D. A scientific adventure.

2.When the first piece hits the South Atlantic, it causes      .

A. an earthquake                B. damages to cities

C. an Earth explosion            D. huge waves

3.Why can’t the northern half of the earth escape for long?

A. Because the land is covered with water.

B. Because the light and heat from the sun can not reach the Earth.

C. Because people there can not live at the temperature of zero.

D. Because wars break out among countries.

4.By giving the example of dinosaurs, the author tries to prove      .

A. animals could not live in the cold climate

B. what happened 65 million years ago was an invented story

C. the human beings will die out in 2094

D. the Earth could be hit by other objects in space

Getting paid to talk about the World Cup is a great job. I’m not a football commentator(評論員), though-just an English teacher in Japan.

I come to Japan two years ago, and didn’t think I would stay, but Japan has that effect on you. People often end up living here longer than they planned. I think it’s best to teach in a bigger city where there are other foreigners to mix with, rather than a small town where English teachers often complain of feeling like a goldfish in a bowl. Many people choose to live in Tokyo, of course, which is good for the nightlife factor. But I’d say that for general quality of living, cities of neither too large nor too small, like Sapporo where I live, are better choices.

I teach English privately, which means I’m my own boss. If you want to devote yourself to private teaching, it’s well worth doing a TEFL course first, because your lessons will be much better for it. The problem with private teaching is finding students; it took me a year to build up a full schedule(日程表) of private lessons, so I started out teaching in schools part-time.

Most of my foreign friends here work full-time for big English conversation schools. The salary is fine to live on, but whether you can save money depends on how much going out and traveling you do here.

The schools are unwilling to take time off –even teachers with tickets for the England-Argentina game had trouble getting the day off.

A.there are many foreigners in Japan

The massive magnitude(震級) 8.8 earthquake that struck the west coast of Chile moved the entire city of Concepcion at least 10 feet to the west, and moved other parts of South America as far apart as the Falkland Islands and Fortaleza, Brazil.

These measurements, produced from data gathered by researchers from four universities and several agencies, paint a much clearer picture of the power behind this earthquake, believed to be the fifth-most-powerful since instruments have been available to measure earthquake.

Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina moved about 1 inch to the west. And Chile's capital, Santiago, moved about 11 inches to the west-southwest. The cities of Valparaiso and Mendoza, Argentina, northeast of Concepcion, also moved.

The quake's epicenter (震中) was in a region of South America that's part of the so-called “ring of fire,” an area of major seismic(地震的) stresses which encircles(環(huán)繞,包圍) the Pacific Ocean. All along this line, the plates on which the continents move press against each other.

Mike Bevis, professor of earth sciences at Ohio State, has led a project since 1993 that has been measuring crustal(地殼的)movement in the Central and Southern Andes. The effort is called the Central and Southern Andes GPS Project, or CAP.

Ben Brooks, an associate researcher with the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology at the University of Hawaii, said that the event, offers a unique opportunity to better understand the seismic processes that control earthquakes.

“We now have modern, precise instruments to evaluate this event, and because the site borders a continent, we will be able to get evidences of the changes it caused.” said Brooks.

1.What is the main idea of the passage?

A.The earthquake in Chile was dangerous.

B.Earthquake often happen in Chile

C.The earthquake in Chile moved cities.

D.The earthquake in Chile had been predicted.

2.Which of the following cities moved to the west most?

A.Concepcion        B.Buenos Aires       C.Santiago          D.Valparaiso

3. The underlined words “ring of fire” in Paragraph 4 refer to __________.

A.the fire and the earthquake

B.the beautiful places around the ocean

C.the plate on which South America lies

D.the area around the Pacific Ocean

4. What do we know about CAP?

A.It is under the leadership of Mike Bevis.

B.It observes earthquakes worldwide.

C.It is designed to watch climate changes.

D.It mainly studies the Pacific Ocean.
