A new study suggests that the more teenagers watch television, the more likely they are to develop depression (憂郁) as young adults.

The researchers used a national long-term survey of adolescent health to survey the relationship between media (媒體) use and depression. They based their findings on more than 4,000 adolescents who were not depressed when the survey began.

As part of the survey, the young people were asked how many hours of television or videos they watched daily. They were also asked how often they played computer games and listened to the radio. Media use totaled an average of five and one-half hours a day. More than two hours of that was spent watching TV.

Seven years later, more than seven percent of the young people had signs of depression. The average age at that time was twenty-one. The researchers say they did not find any such relationship with the use of other media such as movies, video games or radio, etc. But the study did find that every extra hour of television meant an eight percent increase in the chances of developing signs of depression. Young men were more likely than young women to develop depression given the same amount of media use.

Last December, a popular magazine published a study of activities that help lead to happy lives. Researchers from the University of Maryland found that people who describe themselves as happy spend less time watching television than unhappy people. The study found that happy people are more likely to be socially active, to join in outdoor activities and to hang out with friends.

A. Movies and video games may cause depression.

B. Less than 7% of the young people became depressed.

D. Young women had higher chances of becoming depressed than young men.

3According to the passage, what can we conclude?

A. Teenagers should not watch television any longer.

B. Teenagers play more video games instead of watching TV.

Apple is to open a research lab in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen, according to Tim Cook, its chief executive, as it seeks to boost sales in the country and improve ties with the authorities.

Beijing has been encouraging foreign technology companies to carry out more high-end work on the mainland as part of efforts to revitalize local industry.

It will be Apple’s second facility in China. It already has a new research and development facility in Beijing.

The two R&D centers were “aimed at strengthening relationships with local partners and universities as we work to support talent development across the country”, Apple said in a statement.

A closer relationship with the Chinese authorities has been a priority following setbacks for the US technology company this year.

The iPhone has been losing market share to high-end handsets made by local competitors including Huawei, Vivo and Oppo, which topped the rankings in the second quarter, while Apple languished in fifth place, according to Canalys data.

Analysts said the announcement of the R&D centre was Mr. Cook’s latest attempt to gain favour with Beijing, following the US group’s $1billion investment in Didi Chuxing, the Chinese car-hailing company, in May.

Apple has had to change its approach in China as it faces rising nationalism and high-quality local competition, according to Ge Jia, a tech blogger, who wrote yesterday: “It’s time for Apple to cast aside their pride.” “Their previous strategy of only selling devices to China without leaving anything behind is not working any more and they are starting their process of localisation in China through the Shenzhen lab.”

【1】Apple is going to open a research lab in Shenzhen to _____________.

A. promote Shenzhen’s economy

B. promote its sales in China

C. get help of Chinese experts

D. join in local competition

2】Which of the following is true?

A. There is only one research facility in China.

B. Apple has always been in good relationship with Chinese authorities.

C. Huawei has ranked to No.1 in the second sales quarter.

D. Apple is changing its strategy in order to boost sales.

A. Its bad quality and high price.

B. Nationalism and high-quality local competition.

C. Out-of-date design and false advertisement.

D. Chinese government’s ban on purchase.

4】According to Ge Jia, what is Apples previous sales approach in China?

A. taking part in high-quality local competition.

B. choosing certain customers in China.

C. only selling devices.

D. selling devices as well as technology.

Hobbs was an orphan (孤兒). He worked in a factory and every day he got a little money. Hard work made him thin and weak. He wanted to borrow a lot of money to learn to paint pictures, but he did not think he could pay off the debts.

One day a lawyer said to him, “One thousand dollars, and here is the money.” As Hobbs took the package of notes, he was very dumbfounded. He didn't know where the money came from and how to spend it. He said to himself, “I could go to find a hotel and live like a rich man for a few days; or I give up my work in the factory and do what Id like to do—painting pictures. But it's too much for one and too little for the other.”

“Here is the reading of your uncle's will (遺囑),” said the lawyer, “telling what is to be done with this money after his death. I must ask you to remember one point. 【題目】閱讀理解

閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的四個選項(xiàng)(A、B、C和D)中,選出最佳選項(xiàng)。

Charles Dickens (18121870), the great nineteenth century English novelist, was born near Portsmouth. His father ran heavily into debt (債) and when he was twelve, he had to go and work in a factory. The only formal education he received was a two-year schooling at a school for poor children. In fact, he had to teach himself all he knew. He worked for a time in a lawyers office. After that, he worked as a reporter in the law courts, and later for London newspapers. His life as a writer of novels began in 1833 with short stories and essays in newspapers, and in 1837 his novel The Pickwick Papers made him the most popular author at his time in England.

He was a great observer (觀察者) of people and their places because he was concerned about life and conditions in mid-nineteenth century London. He wrote 19 novels all his life and in many of them, Dickens gave a picture of all classes of England society, showing deep concern for the poor.

Many of his novels like Oliver Twist, David Copperfield, Nicholas Nickleby, Great Expectations, A Tale of Two Cities and so on drew attention to the unfair social conditions that existed in England over a hundred years ago. Dickens wished to see improvement in the living conditions of the poor, but failed to find any useful method to achieve that goal.

【1】 Dickens only received a little formal education because ________.

A. he wanted to teach himself

C. he was too poor to afford any more formal education

D. he needed some working experiences to become a writer

【題目】

Did you see American figure skater, Jeremy Abbott, crash to the ice during the short program at the Sochi Olympics, rolling into the wall, clutching his side in pain. Ten seconds later, he got up and continued his skatedespite the pain, embarrassment and fear. All I could think was: this kids got courage. In business we have a word for itresilience, the ability to gain strengths and confidence from overcoming unpleasant events.

However, opposite examples appeared in Sochi Olympics as well. For them, failure is someone elses fault, because they do not accept personal responsibility. Therefore, they have to pay a high price for this attitude. After years of studying failure, I have learned one thing: modesty and open-mindedness in the face of mistakes is the single best thing you can do to improve results. Everyone fails, but not everyone recovers from failure. The key is to learn from it rather than get beaten by it.

The good news is that each of us has the potential to live a resilient life on and off the job. It may be difficult, but that just makes it all the more powerful and important. If you believe the above paragraph to be true, then youre probably more resilient than you think you are. It takes confidence to be resilient but that too much confidence is a killer is so true of leadership. For example, Ron Johnson, the ill-fated CEO of JC Penney, was so stubborn that he completely missed all sorts of signals from employees and customers and instead listened to all those who agreed with him, which failed his strategy. Bouncing back from failure requires that you recognize something has gone wrong, and you were the one who made it happen.

The challenge of resilience is not just about our work. When parents help their kids deal with every challenging situation, they are doing an unhelpful action to their children. Parents want to protect their kids from failure, but doing so takes away the opportunity from them to practice not

just a life skill but an essential work skill. When self-esteem becomes more important than results, we are accidentally training young people to become less adaptable, not more.

Resilience is not just about getting up off the floor, but also being ready for whatever comes next, even when you dont know what it is. Failures and setbacks are no longer unusual events, but regular features of a dynamic, competitive and highly demanding work environment. Getting up to finish your skate is no longer optional.

【1】The example of Jeremy Abbott shows that one should ______.

A. recover from failure

B. stick to his own viewpoint

C. take others opinions to heart

D. challenge difficulties bravely

【2】According to the author, what can best build up resilience?

A. Being positive and powerful.

B. Being competitive and helpful.

C. Being modest and open-minded.

D. Being confident and responsible.

【3】 Which of the following examples shows us resilience?

A. A teacher offers students timely help and care.

B. A determined athlete practices skating hard every day.

C. A confident leader persuades his staff to follow his plan.

D. A student has got a low grade but continues to work hard.

【4】Which might be the best title for the passage?

A. An Example of Resilience: Ron Johnson

B. Resilience: A Lesson from Sochi

C. Optional Challenges of Resilience

D. Resilience in Family Education
