Last month, 4-year-old Riley ran from his house with his family. Their home in Paradise, California was on fire.

Paradise is a wet place. But this year it got almost no rain. The plants and trees were very dry. So when the fire started, it spread out of control and became the worst fire in Califoria’s history. Lots of houses were burned down, including Riley’s.

② Word cards

Word cards are small cards to help you remember words. Making a set of word cards is an easy way to go over words.

Follow these steps to make word cards:

On one side you write the word, pronunciation and part of speech, e. g. noun, verb, etc.

On the other side write the meaning or a sentence with the word in. You could also write a translation or draw a picture.

Take the cards with you in your bag. When you have five minutes, e. g. on the bus, look at the word and try to remember the meaning.

Look at the other side of the card and check. Or you could read the meaning and try to remember the word.

If writing words on pieces of paper isn’t easy for you, keep a word list on your computer or mobile phone. There are mobile apps to help you.

Whether you play e-sports（電子競技）or not, you might have heard of iG (Invictus Gaming), a Chinese e-sports club. On the night of Nov 3, iG beat Europe’s Fnatic club and won the 2018 League of Legends (LoL) World Championship in South Korea. It was the first time in the event’s（賽事）eight-year history that a Chinese club won.

The long-awaited victory showed how e-sports has progressed in China in recent years. A growing number of e-sports clubs have been founded in China in the last 10 years, and more young gamers are working as e-sports players. However, becoming a skillful e-sports player is not all fun and games.

An e-sports player must be quick in action and able to bear hardship.

They must also have a high APM which means how many actions they can do in a game within one minute. Skilled players can have an APM as high as 400.

E-sports players have to work hard every day. “We start to practice right after we get up in the morning and usually last until midnight,” said Huang Fuquan, a player from iG. “There is at least 12 hours of work every day.”

Robert Frost is an American poet（詩人）, who was born in 1874 in San Francisco, but spent most of his years in snowy places like Massachusetts. The world’s longest cross-sea bridge, the 55-km-long Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (HZMB), opened on Oct 24, 2018. The Guardian described it as one of the “seven wonders of the modern world”.

Construction（建筑工程）on the HZMB began in 2009 and cost about 120 billion（十億）yuan. The bridge connects Hong Kong and Macao to the Chinese mainland city of Zhuhai, CGTN reported.

The HZMB is special in many ways. It’s designed to have a service life of 120 years, 20 years longer than most bridges.

And it’s not just a bridge，but also part tunnel（隧道）and part island. In one part, the bridge turns into a 6.7-km undersea tunnel that passes through two man-made islands. The tunnel is the world’s longest undersea tunnel for road traffic, allowing large ships to continue passing through the sea area above the tunnel.

The HZMB will make it much easier to travel between the three areas it connects. It will shorten the travel time from Hong Kong to Zhuhai from four hours to about 45 minutes.
