Now I’m in my second year at art school in Japan and I often dream about my future. I have big plans and I ’ d like to tell you a little about them.

My first plan is about my holiday. I am going to visit my brother, who is working in Malaysia. My parents and I are going to spend Thanksgiving with him. I am very excited about it.

Besides, I hope to marry and have children before I’m 30, but I can’t plan when I’ll meet the right person and I don’t have a boyfriend now.

In my dreams I see myself at 40 running a successful gardening company. I’ll design beautiful gardens for beautiful people.I’ll have a beautiful house with a swimming pool, two beautiful children, and of course a husband who is as successful as I am.Who knows, it could even be Jasper.

D

When we get wet, we need a towel to get ourselves dry. When a dog gets wet, all it needs is to shake its body. A study in 2010 showed that a wet dog could throw off(甩掉) half the water on its body by shaking for less than a second. In fact, this common act of dogs works better than a washing machine.

The study found that animal shaking begins with the head and ends with the tail(尾巴). Smaller animals must shake faster than bigger animals to get water off. For example, in one second, a rat can shake 18 times, a dog 6 times, and a bear 4 times. Bigger animals can get their bodies dry with fewer shakes.

For animals, shaking is not just about getting themselves dry. It is also about saving their lives. Being wet makes animals heavier, and that makes it harder to run. In the animal world, if an animal is not able to run very fast, it may not live long. Maybe that's why the wet-dog shake" has become a common habit of many animals.

1.How much water can a wet dog throw off from its body by shaking in less than a second?

A.10% B.30% C.50% D.70%

2.From the reading, which picture is probably right?

A. B.

C. D.

3.Why do animals shake themselves dry?

A.To show their love to other animals.

B.To help themselves run faster.

C.To help themselves get more water.

D.To make other animals scared.

4.What can we learn from the reading?

A.The animal's tail can help it run more quickly and easily.

B.Some animals shake more than they need to get water off.

C.Larger animals get drier at each shake than smaller animals.

D.The idea of washing machines came from the dogs' shaking.

My parents seldom encouraged me to ask for help, so I trained myself to become as independent as possible. I thought if I asked for help, I would be a problem to other people.

A few years ago, I was on a trip. In order to save money, I planned to stay in a stranger's house by couch surfing(沙發(fā)客). When I arrived in the host's city, it was rainy.

My host was very friendly. She invited me to go on a walk with her around her city. At that time, I didn't even have the right shoes for the bad weather. I wanted to ask her whether she had any shoes for me. But I didn't want to trouble her. Finally, I said nothing.

It was really cold outside, and the heavy rain made my shoes wet. When we got home three hours later, I had lost all feeling in my feet.

That was all because I wouldn't ask. I wouldn't ask a simple thing like, "Hey, could you find a pair of good shoes for me?”

From that day, I tried hard to get through my fear of asking. It has taken me a long time. From my experiences, I've discovered that people are always happy to offer help. What's more, I have finally realized that asking isn't a sign of weakness(脆弱). Asking gives you the opportunity to discover the kindness of others.

So ask. The worst that can happen is a "no". The best that can happen is an experience you'll never forget.

1.What was the weather like when the writer was on a trip?

A.Cloudy. B.Sunny. C.Windy. D.Rainy.

2.Why did the writer say nothing in the end?

A.The host didn't have any good shoes for him. B.The writer didn't want to trouble the host.

C.The host was not friendly enough. D.The writer didn't want to be independent any more.

3.From the passage we can learn that the writer_.

A.learned a lesson from the trip B.got some good shoes in the end

C.spent six hours visiting the city with the host D.got through his fear of asking quite quickly

4.The underlined word(In Paragraph 6)"opportunity" means”_”.

A.task B.chance C.excuse D.truth

5.What can we learn from the passage?

A.Being independent is always a good thing. B.Don't go outside on rainy and windy days.

C.Don't be afraid to ask for help if you are in trouble. D.Wear good shoes during your trips.

Walter Dean Myers, born on August 12, 1937, was an American writer of children's books.

He was known for young adult literature(文學(xué)). He wrote more than 100 books, including picture books and non-fiction. "I care about writing for young people because I remember how much I needed help and guidance(指導(dǎo))at that time in my life,”Myers said in his book.

Myers loved writing. He got up at five o'clock every morning. He worked at home in a small office that used to be his son's bedroom.

Myers would first write an outline(提綱)for every book. He called this prewriting. He imagined what the story would be and write down ideas in a notebook. To make sure there are enough actions and dialogue for a good story, he thought of 30 scenes. He wrote a short description of each scene in his notebook.

He also cut out pictures of real people and put them on his office walls. He looked at those pictures and came up with ideas. Once he knew what the story would be and who the characters were, he began to write the book. He wrote five pages a day on his computer.

Myers usually worked on three books at a time. When he was not prewriting or writing a book, he might be rewriting something he had already completed. Then he would send the story to his agent(經(jīng)紀(jì)人). He or she made suggestions for the story. After these final changes were made, the book was published and made its way to bookstores and libraries.
