How could we tell time if there were no watches or clocks anywhere in the world? The sun was probably the world’s first “clock”, except in the far north, where the Eskimos live. There, it’s dark most of the winter, and light most of the summer. But in most of the world, people have used the sun for a clock. Even today, if you don’t have a clock, you still know that when the sun shines, it’s day, and when it’s dark, it’s night. The sun can also tell you if it’s morning, noon, or afternoon.
People who live near the sea can tell time from the tides. In the daytime, for about six hours, the water rises higher and higher on the beach. And then it goes down and down for about six hours. The same thing happens again at night. There are two high tides and two low tides every 24 hours.
Seamen on a ship learn how to tell time by looking at the moon and the stars. The whole sky is their clock.
In some places in the world the wind comes up at about the same time every day or changes direction or stops blowing. In these places the wind can be the clock.
A sand clock is an even better clock. If you had fine dry sand in a glass shaped like the one in the picture, you would have what is called an hourglass. The sand in the hourglass goes from the top part to the bottom part in exactly one hour. When the hourglass is turned over, the sand will take another hour to go back again.
1.According to(根據(jù))the passage, there are _______ ways to tell time besides the clock and watch.
A. 3 B. 4 C. 5 D. 7
2.The Eskimos in the far north can’t use the sun for a clock because __________.
A. they know very little about the sun
B. the sun there never goes down in winter
C. it’s too cold for them to go out to watch the sun
D. it has long dark winters and long light summers
3.The underlined(下劃線)word “tides” in the passage means __________.
A. 洋流 B. 潮汐 C. 海嘯 D. 波浪
4.What’s the best title for the passage?
A. Different Ways to Tell Time B. Useful Machines to Tell Time
C. The History of the Clock D. The Development of the Clock

London’s Chinese community(社區(qū)) dates back to the 18th century, when a small number of Chinese sailors moved to the city to work in Limhouse, east London. As time went on, other Chinese people came to this area and Limhouse began to be known as “Chinatown”. However, London’s Chinese community remained very small for many years: at the start of the 20th century, there were just 545 Chinese people in Britain.
After the Second World War, many farmers in Hong Kong lost their jobs and came to London. As Limhouse had been almost destroyed during the war, they settled(定居) in a different area — a part of central London near Leicester Square. This area is now what Londoners call Chinatown.
At first, the new immigrants(移民) found it difficult to get jobs. In the 1950s, however, a small Chinese restaurant opened in London. Many British people visited it and said that Chinese food was wonderful! Suddenly, Chinese restaurants and take-aways started opening in every part of the city. Instead of too little work, the new Chinese immigrants now found that they had too much! They worked as cooks, managers or waiters. Most of them enjoyed their lives and arranged their friends and relatives to join them from overseas.
As time went by, London’s Chinese community became more and more successful. The sons and daughters of the original restaurant workers studied and worked very hard. And most went on to get highly paid jobs. Many Chinese families left Chinatown and moved to the more expensive outskirts. Chinatown, however, is still as lively as ever.
1.Why did many Chinese immigrants come to London in the 1950s?
A.Because it was easy for them to get jobs there.
B.Because Limhouse had been almost destroyed during the war.
C.Because many British people enjoyed Chinese food.
D.Because their children could study there and get highly paid jobs.
2.In the 1950s, Chinese immigrants came to London and worked as ______.
A.sailors B.farmers
C.sailors and farmers D.restaurant workers
3.Where is London’s Chinatown now?
A.In the east of London. B.In Limhouse.
C.Not far from Leicester Square. D.Outside the city.
4.According to this passage, if people live in the outskirts of a city, they live ______.
A.in the village B.far away from the city
C.in the centre of the city D.in the outer areas of the city

The energy which the sun radiates(輻射) goes in every direction. But only a minute part of it falls on the earth. Even so, it radiates power of about 5,000,000 horsepower per square mile per day. The sun gives us as much energy every minute as mankind uses in a year. At present, we use this energy indirectly, and it is our final source of power.
Coal(煤) represents the chemical action of the sun on green plants thousands of years ago. Water power results from the rain formed by vapor when water changes into gas under the sunshine. Even windmills(風(fēng)車磨坊) operate because of air current(流) starts moving by the different heating effects of the sun in different places.
Someday, through chemistry or some types of solar engine, we should use this great source of energy more directly. Already a scientist has worked out an engine, surprisingly doing well, in which the sun’s rays are concentrated through mirrors on water to create steam.
1.What do the underlined words “a minute” mean in this passage?
A.一分鐘 B.一點(diǎn)點(diǎn) C.片刻 D.一份筆記
2.How much energy does the sun radiate every ten square miles per day?
A.About 5,000,000 horsepower B.About 208,333 horsepower
C.About 100,000,000 horsepower D.About 50,000,000 horsepower
3.Which of the following statement is not true, according to the passage?
A.Even windmills turn because of the sun.
B.The sun produces enormous energy for man to make use of.
C.Someday man will be able to use 100% of the solar energy that gets to the earth.
D.The sun produces different heating effects in different places.
4.This passage is mainly about _______.
A.water power B.our final source of power
C.how water power is produced D.the amount of solar energy that can be used

It’s 2012. You feel sick, so you go to the doctor. She checks your fever, looks at your throat, and asks what you’ve been thinking about lately. When you leave, she gives you some medicine, but also a list of thinking skills that you are supposed to practice daily. She says that the way you think is causing some of your illness.
Doctors and other scientists who study the human mind and try to explain why people behave in the way that they do, called psychologists, are starting to believe it. You know that your brain is connected to every part of your body through your nervous system(神經(jīng)系統(tǒng)). Now scientists have proved that how you think and feel can have an influence on the health of your body.
Stress(壓力,緊張) is caused whenever there is a problem or a change in your life. Of course, everybody has stress more or less; nobody’s life is perfect. In fact, stress is necessary. Without stress, we would never learn anything or grow or change. We would probably be bored to death. But too much stress can hurt you. It can weaken your body’s protection so that you are more likely to catch diseases. It can even make you more likely to have an accident.
When you feel stress, your brain sends a message to your body to produce a chemical called adrenaline(腎上腺素). Adrenaline speeds up your breathing and your heart beat. Today you have a different kind of stress. Problems like endless homework or troubles with your family are the kind of things you can’t fight or run away from, so you don’t use up all that adrenaline. It just stays bottled up inside you, and that’s what can do something bad to you.
What can you do about stress? First, you can try to find ways to change things so you aren’t under so much stress. You can set up a plan to finish homework or go to a doctor or a psychologist to try to work things out with your family or your friends. But sometimes you can’t change a stressful situation. Sometimes you don’t even want to. A big change might be a good change, but it will still be stressful.
The link(關(guān)聯(lián)) between your body and brain works in two ways. Your body can help your mind deal with stress. If you are under stress, you need to take especially good care of your body. It’s important to get enough sleep and eat nutritious meals. Some people take a vitamin-mineral pill every day. Another thing that you can do is daily exercise. If you go walking or do aerobic dancing or work out at the gym, you give your body a chance to burn up some of that adrenaline. Of course, a person who isn’t used to much physical activity should start slowly. Anyone with a continuing physical problem should check with a doctor before starting any exercise programs.
1.A psychologist is a person who may help you with your ________.
A.illness and abilities B.thoughts and behavior
C.mind and nervous system D.physical activity and daily exercise
2.Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A.You shouldn’t go to the gym if you are under stress.
B.One can do his homework to burn up adrenaline.
C.Diseases and accidents are caused by stress.
D.Everyone needs stress to improve himself.
3.From the last sentence of Paragraph 5 we can infer that ________.
A.it’s difficult to change a stressful situation
B.it’s not stressful when a good change takes place
C.a big change will cause another stressful situation
D.a stressful situation can’t be changed without any effort
4.What is probably the best title for this passage?
A.The Body-Brain Link. B.The Causes of Stress.
C.The Advice on Health. D.The Nervous System.

I suddenly heard an elephant crying as though frightened. Looking down, I immediately recognized that something was wrong, and ran down to the edge of the near bank. There I saw Mashwe with her three-month-old calf struggling in the fast-rising water, and it was a life-and-death struggle. Her calf was floating and screaming with fear. Mashwe was as near to the far bank as she could get, holding her whole body against the rushing water, and keeping the calf pressed against her huge body. Every now and then the rushing water would sweep the calf away.
There was a sudden rise in the water and the calf was washed clean over the mother’s body and was gone.
